Abstract

Disclosed is a method of estimating the location of an airborne platform 200, the platform having a ground-facing event camera 210 with a field of view. The method steps are: moving the sightline of the camera through a range of directions; recording events triggered during motion of the sightline, each event being a change in intensity recorded at a camera pixel, and associating each event with a ground-referenced position; for each such position within a patch, determining, from the events, a resultant intensity gradient direction; determining a signature for the patch, given by the distribution of the resultant intensity gradient directions for the positions in the patch; and comparing the signature to a signature database to estimate the location of the airborne platform, the database comprising a number of predetermined signatures for patches at known locations. Optionally, the signature is the distribution of the resultant intensity gradient directions amongst a set of intervals of these directions. Each recorded event may include an indication of the magnitude of the intensity change triggering the event. The signature may be a histogram representing the sum of resultant intensity gradient magnitudes in each of a set of intervals of resultant intensity gradient directions.
