Abstract
A system and method for controlling exterior lights 20 of a vehicle 10 to illuminate an under-illuminated area, for example so that driver assistance systems can be used in low-lighting conditions. The system comprises one or more processors 130 which instruct exterior lights 20 of the vehicle to illuminate a proximal area when the processor(s) 130 receive an indication that an image of the area, taken by one or more cameras 30 of the vehicle, is poorly-lit. Subsequently, the processor(s) 130, based on images of the illuminated area received from the one or more cameras 30, generates a volumetric reconstruction of the area. The volumetric reconstruction may be provided as input to a driver assistance system of the vehicle, such as an autonomous driving system or a visualisation system. Optionally, the processor(s) 130 instruct a torque system to slow or stop the vehicle upon receipt of the under-illuminated indication.
