Abstract

Apparatus for drying and/or styling hair comprises sensors 25, 32, 33, 34 for sensing and outputting data indicative of how the apparatus is being operated by the user during hair treatment. A heater 6 is provided which comprises a plurality of independently controllable heater electrodes (64, fig.3a) that define a plurality of independently controllable heating zones (642, fig.4a). A controller 28 is configured to process the sensor data to predict the desired treatment which the user is trying to achieve and/or process the sensor data to calculate a frustration score. The frustration score is indicative of a level of frustration of the user while attempting to achieve the desired treatment. The temperature or the power output of the one or more heating zones is then controlled based on the predicted desired treatment and/or on the calculated frustration score. This helps the user to achieve the desired treatment and/or to avoid the hair being burnt. A method of generating a frustration calculator or a desired treatment predictor using annotated training streams of data and a machine learning algorithm is also described.
