Abstract

A method of manufacturing an iodinated polyolefin. The method comprises adding a halogenating agent, polyolefin and an activator to a reactor extruder under a nitrogen atmosphere. The halogenating agent comprises iodoform (CHI3) and the activator comprises sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and are added to the reactor in a solid form. The polyolefin may comprise polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutene, polyethylene-copolymers, steroblock polypropylene, synthetic rubber or similar. The halogenating agent and activator are added to the reaction in the ratio 3:1 to 1:1. The reaction is caried out between 20 and 150 °C. The polyolefin repeating unit and halogenating agent are added to the reactor in the ratio 3:1 and 1:1. The reaction is carried out for 0.5 – 2.5 hours. The halogenation of the polyolefin will be between 4 and 25 wt %.
