Description
FENCE POST SLEEVE FOR DUAL FENCE DESIGN INSTALLATION
FIELD OF INVENTION
[0001] The present disclosure generally relates to the field of fencing technology, and more specifically, to systems and devices that facilitate the installation of a new fence design.
BACKGROUND
[0002] Fencing is a common feature in residential, commercial, and agricultural properties. It serves various purposes such as marking property boundaries, providing privacy, enhancing aesthetic appeal, and ensuring security. Fences are typically constructed from a variety of materials, including wood, metal, vinyl, and composite materials, among others. The choice of material often depends on the specific requirements of the property owner, such as durability, maintenance, cost, and aesthetic preferences.
[0003] One common type of fencing involves the use of fence posts and fence panels. Fence posts are vertical structures that are embedded into the ground at regular intervals along the boundary of the property. They provide the structural support for the fence. Fence panels, on the other hand, are typically flat, rectangular structures that are attached to the fence posts to form the actual barrier of the fence. The panels can be made from the same material as the posts or from a different material, depending on the desired aesthetic and functional characteristics of the fence.
[0004] In many cases, particularly in urban and suburban settings, fences are shared between neighbouring properties. This means that the same fence serves as the boundary for two adjacent properties. In such cases, the fence posts are typically positioned along the actual boundary line, while the fence panels are attached to the posts in such a way that they span the boundary line. This arrangement allows both property owners to share the cost and maintenance responsibilities of the fence.
[0005] However, this shared arrangement can also lead to disagreements between neighbours regarding the style and maintenance of the fence. For instance, one neighbour may prefer a particular style or colour of fence panel, while the other neighbour may prefer a different style or colour. Similarly, one neighbour may be willing to invest more time and money into maintaining the fence than the other neighbour. These disagreements can lead to conflicts and can make it difficult to maintain a harmonious relationship between neighbours.
[0006] Furthermore, the process of replacing or modifying a shared fence can be complex and time-consuming. It typically involves removing the existing fence panels, and possibly the fence posts as well, and then installing the new fence panels and posts. This process can be disruptive and can temporarily compromise the privacy and security of the properties. Moreover, it requires the agreement and cooperation of both neighbours, which can be difficult to achieve in some cases.
SUMMARY OF INVENTION
[0007] This summary is provided to introduce a selection of concepts in a simplified form that are further described below in the detailed description. DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0035] The following description sets forth exemplary aspects of the present disclosure. It should be recognized, however, that such description is not intended as a limitation on the scope of the present disclosure. Rather, the description also encompasses combinations and modifications to those exemplary aspects described herein.
[0036] The present disclosure relates to a system and method for modifying existing fence structures. More specifically, the disclosure provides a fence post sleeve system that allows homeowners to install a new fence design in front of an existing fence without the removal or agreement from neighbours. This system may be particularly beneficial in situations where property boundaries are shared with multiple neighbours, and agreement on a single fence style is difficult to achieve.
[0037] In some aspects, the fence post sleeve system includes a fence post sleeve configured to attach to an existing fence post. The fence post sleeve may have opposed first and second gripping arms that, in combination with a fence post interface wall, create a space to connect to and receive the existing fence post. The fence post sleeve may further include a number of internal walls that define first and second new fence panel receiving channels. These channels may include gripping nubs on internal walls of the fence panel receiving channels to enhance the support of first and second new fence panels. [0038] In some cases, the fence post sleeve system may also include a corner fence post sleeve system. This system may comprise a corner mounting bracket configured to be fastened to an existing corner fence post. The corner mounting bracket may define first and second receiving lips that form a cantilevered lip at opposed ends of the corner mounting bracket and that provide a gap between the existing corner fence post surface and the underside of the first and second receiving lips. A corner fence post sleeve may have first and second mounting skirts that slide behind the first and second receiving lips to secure the corner fence post sleeve to the existing corner fence post. The corner fence post sleeve may further include third and fourth new fence panel receiving channels that allow for the insertion and secure attachment of first and second new corner fence panels.
[0039] These systems may provide a practical and aesthetically pleasing solution to the problem of shared fencing. By allowing homeowners to install a new fence design in front of an existing fence, the systems may enable homeowners to customize their side of a shared fence without altering the existing structure. This may result in a seamless and aesthetically pleasing boundary that satisfies the preferences of multiple neighbours.
[0040] Referring to FIG. 1, in some aspects, the system may include an existing fence post 10 to which are secured a first existing fence panel 12 and a second existing fence panel 14. The existing fence post 10 may be a standard component of a typical fence structure, and may be made of various materials such as concrete, aluminium, or composite. The first existing fence panel 12 and the second existing fence panel 14 may be attached to the existing fence post 10 in a conventional manner, such as by using fasteners or by sliding the panels into slots or channels formed in the fence post.
[0041] In some cases, the first existing fence panel 12 and the second existing fence panel 14 may be of the same design or style, or they may be of different designs or styles. The design or style of the fence panels may be chosen by the homeowner or other person responsible for the fence. The first existing fence panel 12 and the second existing fence panel 14 may be made of various materials, such as wood, metal, plastic, or composite materials, and may have various sizes and shapes.
[0042] In some aspects, the existing fence post 10, the first existing fence panel 12, and the second existing fence panel 14 may form part of a shared fence that separates the property of the homeowner from the property of a neighbour. The shared fence may run along a property boundary, and may be shared by two or more neighbours. The existing fence post 10, the first existing fence panel 12, and the second existing fence panel 14 may form part of the existing fence structure that is to be modified by the fence post sleeve system.
[0043] Turning to FIG. 2, a close-up view of the existing fence post 10, the first existing fence panel 12, and the second existing fence panel 14 is depicted. In some aspects, the existing fence post 10 may be a standard component of a typical fence structure, and may be made of various materials such as concrete, aluminium, or composite. The first existing fence panel 12 and the second existing fence panel 14 are attached to the existing fence post 10 by sliding the panels into slots or channels formed in the fence post.
[0044] In some aspects, the existing fence post 10, the first existing fence panel 12, and the second existing fence panel 14 may form part of a shared fence that separates the property of the homeowner from the property of a neighbour. The shared fence may run along a property boundary, and may be shared by two or more neighbours. The existing fence post 10, the first existing fence panel 12, and the second existing fence panel 14 may form part of the existing fence structure that is to be modified by the fence post sleeve system of the present disclosure.

In some aspects, the existing fence post 10 may have a generally I-or H-shaped cross-section. This shape may include a first flange 16 and a second flange 18 that define a first recess 24 therebetween. The first recess 24 may be configured to receive the first existing fence panel 12. The I-or H-shaped cross-section of the existing fence post 10 may further include a third flange 22 and a fourth flange 20. These flanges may define a second recess 26 therebetween, which may be configured to receive the second existing fence panel 14.
[0046] In some cases, the fence post sleeve 8 may be used with fence posts that have a general letter I shape in cross-section. This shape may define two pairs of opposed flanges with recesses in between. The fence post sleeve 8 may be configured to clip or slide onto opposite fence post flanges on one side of the fence panels. This configuration may allow the fence post sleeve 8 to be removably connected to the existing fence post 10. In other aspects, the fence post sleeve 8 may be used with fence posts that have other shapes or configurations.
[0047] In some embodiments, the fence post sleeve 8 may be configured to allow for the insertion and securement of additional fence panels. This may facilitate the installation of a new fence design adjacent to the existing one without the removal or modification of the current fence structure. The fence post sleeve 8 may include internal walls that define a first new fence panel receiving channel and a second new fence panel receiving channel. These channels may be spaced from the post receiving slot and may be configured to receive and secure additional fence panels.
[0048] Turning to FIG. 4, an orthogonal view of a fence post sleeve 8 designed to be attached to an existing fence post 10 is depicted. The fence post sleeve 8 is shown in shading, indicating its three-dimensional form. The existing fence post 10 is represented in a dashed outline, suggesting its position relative to the sleeve. The fence post sleeve 8 may be designed to fit snugly over the existing fence post 10, as indicated by the alignment of a post receiving slot 28 (see FIG. 5) of the fence post sleeve 8 with the dashed outline of the existing fence post 10.
[0049] In some cases, the post receiving slot 28 may be defined between a first gripping arm 30 and a second gripping arm 32. These arms may grip to a back side of a second flange 18 and a fourth flange 20 on a front side of the existing fence post 10 relative to first and second existing fence panels 12, 14. The fence post sleeve 8 may include internal walls defining a first new fence panel receiving channel 34 and a second new fence panel receiving channel 36 that are spaced from the post receiving slot 28. The first and second new fence panel receiving channels 34, 36 may allow for the insertion and securement of additional fence panels, facilitating the installation of a new fence design adjacent to the existing one without the removal or modification of the current fence structure.
[0050] In some aspects, the fence post sleeve 8 may be made of molded plastic. In other cases, the fence post sleeve 8 may be made of other suitable materials. The fence post sleeve 8 may be about the size of concrete fence posts, which may have a height of 1 to 2 meters and the concrete fence posts about 10 to 20 centimeters wide. However, in other aspects, the fence post sleeve 8 may have different dimensions to accommodate fence posts of different sizes.
[0051] In some embodiments, the fence post sleeve 8 may be used with fence posts made of different materials such as concrete, aluminium, and composite. The fence post sleeve 8 may be configured to clip onto opposite fence post flanges on one side of the fence panels. This configuration may allow the fence post sleeve 8 to be removably connected to the existing fence post 10, providing flexibility in the installation and removal of the fence post sleeve 8. During installation, the fence post sleeve 8 is slid over the second and fourth flanges 18, 20 of the existing concrete fence post 20 and is secured by the first and second gripping arms 30, 32 having projections that are positioned behing the second and fourth flanges 18, 20. That is, the fence post sleeve slidingly and securely receives part of the existing fence post 20, wherein the part of the existing fence post 20 is located in front of the existing fence panels 12, 14 and the channels that receive them.
[0052] Turning to FIG. 5, an orthogonal view of a fence post sleeve 8 designed to be attached to an existing fence post 10 is depicted. The fence post sleeve 8 is shown in relation to the outline of a standard I-shaped fence post 10, which is represented by dashed lines. The fence post sleeve 8 may be designed with opposed first and second gripping arms 30, 32 that, in combination with a fence post interface wall 38, create a space to connect to and receive the existing fence post 10. [0053] In some cases, the fence post sleeve 8 may include a number of internal walls that define the first and second new fence panel receiving channels 34, 36. These channels may be spaced from the post receiving slot 28 and may be configured to receive and secure additional fence panels. This configuration may facilitate the installation of a new fence design adjacent to the existing one without the removal or modification of the current fence structure. The first and second new fence panel receiving channels 34, 36 may include gripping nubs 40 on internal walls of the fence panel receiving channels 34, 36 to enhance the support of the first and second new fence panels (not shown).
[0054] In some aspects, the first and second new fence panel receiving channels 34, 36 may be sized according to known fence panels. This may allow the fence post sleeve 8 to accommodate a variety of fence panel designs and sizes, providing flexibility in the choice of fence design. In other cases, the first and second new fence panel receiving channels 34, 36 may be sized differently to accommodate fence panels of different sizes or designs. This may allow a homeowner to install a new fence design in front of an existing fence without the removal or agreement from neighbours.
[0055] Referring now to FIG. 6, an isometric view of a fence post sleeve 8 is depicted. The fence post sleeve 8 is shown in solid lines and filled in shading, while the existing fence post 10 is represented in dashed lines to illustrate how the sleeve fits over it. The fence post sleeve 8 may be designed with a channel that allows for the insertion and secure attachment of additional first and second new fence panels 44, 46, also shown in dashed lines. This configuration may enable homeowners to customize their side of a shared fence without altering the existing structure.
[0056] In some cases, the relationship between the fence post sleeve 8 and the existing fence post 10 is such that the fence post sleeve 8 encases one part of the existing fence post 10 in front of the first and second existing fence panels 12, 14. This configuration may allow the fence post sleeve 8 to be removably connected to the existing fence post 10, providing flexibility in the installation and removal of the fence post sleeve 8.
[0057] Turning to FIG. 7, an orthogonal view of a fence post sleeve 8 designed to be attached to an existing fence post 10 is depicted. This configuration may allow the fence post sleeve 8 to be removably connected to the existing fence post 10, providing flexibility in the installation and removal of the fence post sleeve 8.
[0058] In some cases, the fence post sleeve 8 may include a number of internal walls that define the first and second new fence panel receiving channels 34, 36. These channels may be spaced from the post receiving slot and may be configured to receive and secure additional fence panels. This configuration may facilitate the installation of a new fence design adjacent to the existing one without the removal or modification of the current fence structure. The first and second new fence panel receiving channels 34, 36 may include gripping nubs 40 on internal walls of the fence panel receiving channels 34, 36 to enhance the support of the first and second new fence panels 44, 46.
[0059] Referring now to FIG. 8, an isometric view of a fence post sleeve system is depicted. In some aspects, the system may include a fence post sleeve 8 that is designed to attach to an existing fence post 10. This configuration may allow for the installation of additional fence panels, such as first new fence panel 44 and second new fence panel 46, adjacent to or in front of the existing fence panels, such as first existing fence panel 12 and second existing fence panel 14. The fence post sleeve 8 may be positioned centrally in the figure, with one new fence panel 44, 46 shown on each side. This arrangement may illustrate how the fence post sleeve 8 facilitates the addition of new fence panels 44, 46 while maintaining the position of the original panels 12, 14.
[0060] In some cases, the fence post sleeve 8 may ensure that both the neighbour's fence and the homeowner's fence sit almost flush against each other with a small space in between. This configuration may provide a seamless and aesthetically pleasing boundary. In other aspects, the fence post sleeve 8 may be configured differently to accommodate different fence designs or to achieve different aesthetic effects.
[0061] In some embodiments, the fence post sleeve 8 may include a base plate and a capping 48 to prevent water and dirt ingress. The base plate may be positioned at the bottom of the fence post sleeve 8, and the capping 48 may be positioned at the top of the fence post sleeve 8. The base plate and the capping 48 may be made of the same material as the fence post sleeve 8, or they may be made of different materials. [0096] The method of installation for the fence post sleeve system and the corner fence post sleeve system involves several steps.
[0097] For non-corner fence panels, i.e. where the fence panels are to run in the same direction (in parallel but adjacent one another), a first step in the installation process involves sliding the fence post sleeve 8 over the flanges of an existing fence post 10. Specifically, the fence post sleeve 8 is slid over the second flange 18 and the fourth flange 20 of the existing fence post 10. This action positions the fence post sleeve 8 in front of the existing fence panels, namely the first existing fence panel 12 and the second existing fence panel 14. The opposed first and second gripping arms 30, 32 of the fence post sleeve 8 securely grip the back side of the second and fourth flanges 18, 20 of the existing fence post 10, thereby ensuring a secure connection between the fence post sleeve 8 and the existing fence post 10. [0098] Once the fence post sleeve 8 is securely positioned on the existing fence post 10, the new fence panels can be installed. Specifically, the first new fence panel 44 and the second new fence panel 46 are slid into the first and second new fence panel receiving channels 34, 36 of the fence post sleeve 8, respectively. This action is performed from above, allowing the new fence panels 44, 46 to be easily and securely inserted into the fence post sleeve 8.
[0099] The installation process for the corner fence post sleeve system begins with the securement of a corner mounting bracket 52 to an existing corner fence post 50. The corner mounting bracket 52 is fastened to the front corner region 84 of the existing corner fence post 50 using fastening mechanisms 58. This action ensures a secure connection between the corner mounting bracket 52 and the existing corner fence post 50.
[0100] Once the corner mounting bracket 52 is securely fastened to the existing corner fence post 50, the corner fence post sleeve 64 can be installed. Specifically, the first and second mounting skirts 66, 68 of the corner fence post sleeve 64 are slid behind the first and second receiving lips 60, 62 of the corner mounting bracket 52, respectively. This action securely attaches the corner fence post sleeve 64 to the existing corner fence post 50.
[0101] With the corner fence post sleeve 64 securely attached to the existing corner fence post 50, the new corner fence panels can be installed. Specifically, the first new corner fence panel 76 and the second new corner fence panel 78 are slid into the third and fourth new fence panel receiving channels 70, 72 of the corner fence post sleeve 64, respectively. This action is performed from above, allowing the new corner fence panels 76, 78 to be easily and securely inserted into the corner fence post sleeve 64.
[0102] In conclusion, the method of installation for the fence post sleeve system and the corner fence post sleeve system allows for the easy and secure installation of new fence panels in front of existing fence panels, without the removal or modification of the existing fence structure. This method provides homeowners with a practical and aesthetically pleasing solution for customizing their side of a shared fence.
