Description
Window and Patio Door Security Devices This invention relates to security devices for sliding windows or patio doors with at least two rectangular glazing panels slidable relative to each other between open and closed positions, the panels when in their closed position having overlapping vertically extending frame members.
There is a requirement to improve the security of such windows and patio doors by securing the glazing panels against being forced apart in directions perpendicular to the planes of the glazing panels when in their closed position.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide an improved form of security device for use with such windows and patio doors which meets the above requirement.
Thus according to the present invention there is provided a security device for a sliding window or a patio door with at least two rectangular glazing panels slidable relative to each other between open and closed positions, the panels when in their closed position having overlapping vertically extending frame members, the security device having a first set of locking components for mounting on a first glazing panel frame member and a second set of locking components for mounting on a second glazing panel frame member, the sets of components having locking formations which engage each other when in the overlapping closed position to prevent movement of the panels relative to each other in directions perpendicular relative to the panes of the panels, and handle operated locking means mounted on one glazing panel for engaging the locking components on the other panel to prevent movement of the panels relative to each other in directions parallel to the planes of the panels.
In such an arrangement movement of the handle to a locking position may move a locking member carried on said one glazing panel to engage the set of locking components carried on the other glazing panel. This operation of a single handle can thus operate a multi-point locking system.
The first and second sets of locking components may have first and second portions respectively which have surfaces parallel to the planes of the glazing panels and which overlap and engage each other when in the closed position to prevent movement of the panels relative to each other in directions perpendicular to the planes of the panels.
One set of locking components may have third portions which are engaged by the locking bar when the panels are in their overlapping closed position and the handle is moved to the locking position.
The third portions of the locking formations may have cut outs engaged by projections on the locking member.
The handle may be pivotally supported on and the locking member may also slide within an elongated strip member which is designed to extend along an edge of the vertical frame member of one glazing panel. This strip member may also include a vertically extending lip which extends along this frame member and is designed to extend behind and overlap a corresponding vertically extending lip provided on the other glazing panel to further limit perpendicular movement of the panels away from each other.
The security device is also preferably provided with a lock which when operative prevents rotation of the handle from its locking position.
The handle may be designed to be provided at a vertical mid-point on the overlapping frame members so that the handle can be conveniently operated by a person seated in a wheel chair.
There is also provided a security device for sliding window or a patio door with at least two rectangular glazing panels slidable relative to each other between open and closed positions, the panels when in their closed position having overlapping frame members, the security device having a first set of multi-point locking components for mounting on a first glazing panel frame member and a second set of multi-point locking components for mounting on a second glazing panel frame member, and a handle pivotally supported on one frame member which when moved to a locking position locks the glazing panels against movement relative to each other at multiple points. The handle may conveniently be designed to be provided at a vertical mid-point on the overlapping frame members so that the handle can be conveniently operated by a person seated in a wheel chair.
The invention also provides a sliding window or patio door provided with a security device as described above.
The present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:-Figure 1 shows a side view of a patio door embodying the security device of the present invention in its closed position; Figure 2 shows the patio door of Figure 1 in a partially open position; Figure 3 shows a perspective view of part of a centre vertical frame member of the non-sliding patio door glazing panel of Figures 1 and 2 with is associated locking components; Figure 4 shows a perspective view from the rear of a handle arrangement provided on the sliding patio door glazing panel which is used to operate the security device of the present invention with the associated locking components in their closed position; Figure 5 shows the handle arrangement of Figure 4 with part of the handle mount removed for clarity; Figures 6 to 8 show the locking components of the security device in stages of their engagement, and Figure 9 shows a perspective and sectional view, from beneath and from the rear, through the vertical frame member of the sliding panel of the patio door and the interengaging locking formations about to engage.
Referring to the drawings, a patio door 10 has two glazing panels 11 and 12 mounted in an outer frame 13. Panel 11 is non-sliding and panel 12 slides between open and closed positions as is conventional. Figure 1 shows the panels in their closed position and Figure 2 shows the sliding panel 12 partially open. When in their closed position the vertical frame members 11a and 12a overleap each other as is conventional.
The security devoice of the present invention is provided to prevent the frame embers 11a and 12a from being forced apart in direction perpendicular to the planes of panels 11 and 12.
The security device includes a first set of locking components 14 for mounting on the first non-sliding glazing panel frame member 11a and a second set of locking components 15 for mounting on a second glazing panel frame member 12a. The first sets of components 14 are screwed at 16 to frame member 11a (see Figure 3) and have having locking formations in the form of wings 17 extend in planes parallel to the plane of panel 11. Each formation 14 also has a projection 14a with a locking cut out 18. The second set of components 15 are screwed at 19 to the frame member 12a and have raised wing portions 20 which again extend in planes parallel to the plane of panel 12.
As will be appreciated, when sliding panel 12 is moved relative to non-sliding panel 11 towards the closed position of the panels, as indicated by arrow "Y", the first set of components 14 moves from the Figure 6 position to the Figure 7 position in which the wings 17 engage under the raised wing portions 20 thus preventing the movement of the components 14 and 15 and hence the panels 11 and 12 in directions "P" perpendicular to the planes of panels 11 and 12 thus preventing these panels being forced apart by an intruder in an attempt to disengage the panels from the outer frame 13.
The locking components 15 also include a locking bar 21 which can be slid, as indicated by arrow I'S", from the Figure 7 position to the Figure 8 position by rotation of a handle 22 mounted on frame member 12a. This locking bar has locking projections 23 which engage locking cut outs 18 in locking components 14 when the handle 22 is rotated to its locking position as indicated by arrow "R" in Figure 5. When cut out 18 are engaged by projections 23 the two glazing panels are locked against movement in planes parallel to the planes of the panels. Handle 22 has a key operated lock 24 which when operative locks the handle in its locking position.
The handle 22 is pivotally supported on frame member 12a via a strip member 25 which extends along the edge of frame member 12a (see Figure 4) and is screwed thereto a various locations. A square shaft 26 connected with handle 22 engages an actuating mechanism 27 which contains a toothed actuating member 28 which in turn engages formations 28a on sliding locking bar 21 to move bar 21 in a known manner when handle 22 is rotated. The actuating mechanism 27 and locking bar 21 are mounted within strip member 25. Strip 25 also includes various sealing strips 29 and an angled lip 30 which engages behind a similar angled lip 31 (see Figure 3) provided on frame member 11a when the panels are in their closed position to further limit perpendicular movement of the panels away from each other.
As can be seen from Figure 3, the locking components are mounted on the frame member 11a in cut-outs 31a in the lip 31. Similarly, the locking formations 15 (see Figure 4) are mounted in cut-outs 25b in the edge of strip member 25.
The handle 22 is conveniently mounted at a vertical mid-point on the frame member 12a so that it can be operated by a person seated in a wheel chair.
This concept of a single operating lever mounted at a vertical mid-point of a patio door frame can be used to operate a variety of locks simultaneously on such a patio door or sliding window.
