Abstract

A abdominal dressing for the purpose of securing a ace stopper and also allowing access for a abdominal catheter comprising of a multilayered adhesive dressing, wherein the base layer is adhesively joined to the wearers skin and has an opening to receive either the stopper or a catheter tube, and a top layer that can be opened and closed to allow insertion of the stopper or tube. The re-sealable top layer may act as a securing device when the ace stopper is fitted in the stoma.

Description

Intellectual Property Office Application No. GB1414227.7 RTN4 Date:20 August 20t5 The following terms are registered trade marks and should be read as such wherever they occur in this document: ACE stopper Intellectual Property Office is an operating name of the Patent Office www.gov.uk/ipo Ace/ok dressing and securement device for Ace Stopper This invention relates to a device for the securement of the Ace Stopper. The secret of our invention is in its simplicity. It allows the dressing to remain in place while peeling back the self-adhesive protective upper dressing to enable the user to insert the catheter and carry out the catherisation procedure. The Ace Stopper (after sterilisation) can then be re-inserted and the self-adhesive protective upper dressing pulled over to hold it in place When a child (or an adult) has an operation on the neurophatic bladder, a device called Mitrofanoff is inserted. The Ace Stopper is a small high grade silicone which is just like a plug and just sits inside the Mitrofanoff. The Ace Stopper can be used to help with stenosis, narrowing of the Mitrofanoff, to keep the stoma dilated.
The Ace Stopper is usually left in the navel for a period over two years and this is where the Acelok dressing invention will succeed. The original Ace Stopper plaster would usually be removed every three hours which over the course of a full day can cause skin irritation, sores and rashes. The Acelok dressing can be left on the skin for 3-5 days and therefore reducing the irritation. It will enable the user to carry on with their normal daily activities, such as swimming. The Acelok dressing will also remove the need the carry a bag fill of spare Ace Stoppers, numerous plasters (AceStop dressings), catheters and hand sanitisers. With the Acelok dressing, this would be considerably reduced to the catheters and hand sanitisers.
One of the problems with the current usage of Ace Stopper and the plasters is that there is a problem that the Ace Stopper can fall out especially if the plaster get wet or through excessive movement (i.e. restless sleep patterns). If the Ace Stopper does fall out, it is extremely likely that the stoma could quickly close. This would result in emergency hospital treatment to reintroduce a smaller catheter and, in most cases, this would have to be carried out at a specialist hospital (which can lead to further stress and anxiety for the user). If using a smaller catheter doesn't work, then the user risks suffering a trauma and Mitrofanoff would not function. The user would be required to use a catheter bag (which can be embarrassing). Also, for children this could lead to more valuable time off school, missing important education, and for adults, unnecessary time off.
Having a disabled son who requires daily catherisation/bowels and due to his having no control or feeling there can be an overflow discharge of urine and this will lead to the original hospital recommended dressing falling off and the Ace Stopper coming out.
Since applying the Acelok dressing, I have seen first-hand the improvement in his well-being and general attitude and no more night time leaks.
The invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying photos in which: Photo I shows the Ace Stopper and the Acelok dressing separately Photo 2 shows the Ace Stopper in the navel and the Acelok dressing pulled back ready to remove the Ace Stopper prior to the catherisation procedure being carried out.
