Description
TITLE: Bar and Weights
The present invention relates to a bar and weights. A bar with weights is well known and used as a fitness exerciser. A single bar is provided to which is attached at each of its ends any number of circular weights. The circular weights have a central aperture to receive a bar end. It is also known to provide dumbbells as a fitness exerciser. It is also known to provide a kettle bell as a fitness exerciser.
The invention seeks to provide an improved bar and weights which may also be used as dumbbells and in a similar fashion as kettle bells.
According to the present invention there is provided a bar and weights comprising: an elongate bar having opposing ends; a plurality of substantially planar weights for mounting on to one of said bar ends, each of said weights being generally “bone” shaped with a waisted central section adapted to be held by a hand; and, a mounting means for releasably securing said weights to the elongate bar, whereby, in use, the plurality of weights are releasably secured to the ends of the bar in a first exercise configuration, or the plurality of weights are removed from the bar for use as dumbbells in a second exercise configuration.
The bone shaped weights may comprise a handle formed in at least one end section, either side of the central section.
The bone shaped weights may comprise a handle formed in both sections either side of the central section. The bone shaped weights may comprise an 8-shaped configuration.
Preferably, the mounting means may comprise a pair of extending shafts to engage a pair of apertures in each weight. The shafts may extend from a plate at each end of the bar.
Preferably, the mounting means may comprise a jaw member, and said jaw member may be adapted to clamp around the pair of extending shafts. The jaw member may comprise a pair of apertures for receiving the shafts.
Preferably, the shafts may comprise a thread and the jaw member may comprise a knurled knob for releasably securing the jaw member to these threaded shafts. Alternatively, the jaw member may comprise a wingnut for releasably securing the jaw member to the threaded shafts.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing showing a part exploded perspective view of a bar and weights. Referring to the drawing there is shown a bar and weights 1.
An elongate bar 2 has opposing ends 3A,3B. At each end a plate 4 is provided with each plate 4 supporting a pair of outwardly extending shafts 4A,4B. A plurality of weights 10 are provided each adapted to connect to the shafts 4A,4B at one of said bar ends. Each of said weights are generally “bone” shaped with a waisted central section 11 adapted to be held by a hand, and an end section 12,13 either side of the central section.
Each end sections 12,13 have a hollowed section 12A,13A formed therein whereby die ends 12B,13B of the end sections 12,13 can be used as a handle. A pair of apertures 14A,14B are provided to receive the shafts 4A,4B.
Weights 10 are of the same shape but of different sizes in order that a selection of weights can be provided at die ends of the bar to make a fitness device of a required overall weight.
Releasable securement means is provided at each end of the bar to prevent the weights sliding off the ends of the bar. The releasable securement means is in the form of a jaw member 20 with a pair of jaws 21,22 adapted to clamp around the pair of extending shafts. Jaw member 20 has a pair of apertures 23A,23B to receive the shafts 4A,4B. A knurled knob 24 (or alternatively a wingnut) on a threaded shaft 25 can be rotated to clamp and unclamp the jaw member to or form the shafts 4A,4B.
In use weights can be placed on the ends of the bar and the bar and weights being used for exercise. Alternatively any one of said weights can be used on its own as a dumbbell by a person holding the waisted central section 11 and raising and lowering it by flexing the arm. Alternatively any one of the weight can be used in a similar fashion to a kettle bell by a person holding the end 12B or 13B and swinging, pressing, and/or rotating the weight the invention may be made of any suitable material such as metal. Professional and consumer versions of the invention may be produced.
The invention may take a form different to that specifically described above. For example only one end of the weight end section need include a handle so that a weight can be used in a similar fashion to a kettle bell. Alternatively no handle could be provided on a weight end section so that the weight can only be used with the bar or as a dumbbell.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention. 4
