Description

Tamper Evident Safety Cap and Connecting Fitments Thereof
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a tamper evident safety cap and connecting fitments thereof, particularly suitable for use with aerosol cans and pressunsed containers.
More particubrly, the present invention relates to a tamper evident safety cap for use with an actuator body, said actuator body being provided with an integral actuator button and one or more ancillary push on output adapters.
In general an aerosol container consists of a pressurised fluid inside a pressure resistant container. In use, the pressurised fluid is forced through an outlet, which can be a wide opening orifice, or a narrow orifice, which will determine a flow or spray pattern, depending on orifice selection. For the present description we will use the term pressurised container, to be a fluid, gas, cream, etc. which is contained in a suitable pressurised canister.
Background to the Invention
Aerosol cans and pressurised containers have found wide application, for example. in the food industry, medical industry, cosmetics, cleaning agents and the like.
The use of pressurised containers and aerosol canisters is increasing. Worldwide nearly 12 billion* aerosols were produced in 2008 (*European Aerosol federation), whilst in the UK in 2011 more than 1.4 billiont aerosol canisters were filled (tBritish Aerosol Manufacturers Association).
Aerosol cans and pressurised containers are generally provided with a cap or cover for covering a dispensing valve. This valve is intermittently operated to dispense small amounts of the product as needed. The cap or cover is intended to prevent or reduce any unwanted discharge or loss of the contents of the container from inadvertent activation of the male or female valve. The Cap or cover also protects the valve from damage in transit and storage etc. One problem with conventional aerosol cans and pressurised containers is that the cap or cover may not provide an effective tamper evident seal prior to use. This is a problem especially in the food and medical industries.
Some aerosol canisters and pressurised containers are provided with a form of tamper proof cap which usually comprises an integral plastic strip that initially locks the cap to the container; the seal strip must be broken to access the aerosol. However, one problem with such a tamper evident strip is that often the cap will fail to adequately form a reasonable "snap fit" with the can once the sealing strip has been removed.
Furthermore, since existing tamper evident caps also comprise a cover for the dispensing nozzle of the aerosol canister and pressurised container, such tamper evident caps are not suitable for use with an aerosol "refill" can.
Thus, there is a need for a tamper evident safety cap for an aerosol canister and pressurised container that is suitable for use with an aerosol "refill" can.
I
Summary of the Invention
We have now created a novel form of tamper evident cap suitable for use with an aerosol canister and pressurised container. The tamper evident cap is suitable for use with an aerosol canister and pressurised container, although it will be understood that the tamper evident cap can be used with aerosol canisters and pressurised containers that are not intended to be refill cans.
Thus, according to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a tamper evident cap suitable for use with an aerosol canister or pressurised container which comprises: a resilient cap capable of being fixed to a valve housing of an aerosol canister or pressurised container; the resilient cap being provided with a substantially central column suitable for surrounding a discharge port of the valve assembly crimped on an aerosol canister or pressurised container; the column being provided with one or more integral tamper evident flaps.
Access to the discharge part of the valve housing is only achievable by connecting the actuator assembly; this in turn breaks the tamper evident flaps.
The resilient flexible tamper evident flaps may be in the form of a plurality of petals or slits.
Generally, the resilient flexible tamper evident flaps comprise a flexible resilient member with at least one slit. alihough it is preferred that a plurality of slots is present. The resilient flexible diaphragm valve is biased to a closed position.
However, to use the aerosol canister and pressurised container, the actuator body, with ai integrai actuator button, is located onto the tamper evident cap.
Thus, according to a further aspect of the invention there is provided an actuator body and an integral actuator button comprising a tamper evident cap as hereinbefore described. In use, the actuator body and integral actuator are located onto the tamper evident cap.
The actuator button (assembly) is provided with a locating tube which is adapted to engage and break the tamper evident flaps on the central column member of the tamper evident cap and locate onto the valve of the aerosol canister or pressurised container to be accessed, sealed and actuated and contents discharged.
The column may comprise a cylindrical outer wall, optionally a threaded wall, such that the actuator body with an integral actuator button may be fitted around the outer walls of the threaded column. Thus, preferably the actuator body may be provided with an internal screw thread that can engage with the external screw thread of the outer walls of the threaded safety cap.
In use, the valve of the aerosol call! pressurised container is closed until the actuator assembly is connected on the tamper evident cap, which causes the tamper evident flaps on the resilient flexible tamper evident caps to open. Thus, the tamper evident cap comprises a resiliently deformable plastic material provided with one or more flaps.
The tamper evident flap(s), may be secured across the aperture so that when not initially connected to the actuator assembly they are in a closed position. When the actuator body is disconnected, then the discharge valve on the aerosol pressurised container will be in the closed position. When the actuator body is connected onto the pressurised container the actuator button when depressed will push onto the discharge valve forcing it to an open position.
Many different materials may be used for the tamper evident flap(s). The material may vary depending upon the nature of the material in the aerosol canister or pressurised container that is intended to pass through the valve. Most importantly it should be a flexible, resilient and/or elastomeric. The material may preferentially be non-porous, at least towards the material that is the content of the aerosol canister or pressurised container. Thus, plastics materials are well suited for use as the tamper evident cap material, an elastomer such as silicone rubber HDPE or PVC being examples of such plastics materials. Other examples include, but are not limited to, polyvinyl chloride, urethane, ethylene vinyl acetate and styrene butadiene copolymer.
The actuator button has a discharge nozzle. Output adapters can be attached to this nozzle, and provide a variety of discharge options, such as, a conventional spray orificc. Altcrnatively, the discharge nozzle may bc connected to. for example, a wide wet wick applicator or an extension tube for dispensing lubricant / engineering fluid.
Similarly. an air tube for cleaning electronic circuit boards and computer equipment, keyboard etc. may be connected to the discharge nozile.
Also connection of a face mask for human or veterinary drug administration is possible.
The wide wick applicator may comprise a wick element and optionally a wick element support. wherein the wick element support fits into a mating cavity, creating a chamber into which the pressurised product flows and becomes pressurised. The support element is provided with a plurality of flow holes or perforations which allow an even flow of fluid through the flow hoks onto the wick along the whole width of the wick.
This invention provides for an even distribution of the product out onto the whole length of the wick and not solely adjacent to the discharge nozzle as would be the case with traditional methods.
This allows for even and wide application of a solution without using cloths or wipes, being a more preferred, safe and hygienic method.
Preferably. the wick element may comprise a sponge or fabric material. The wick element may be provided with a microfiber layer on the surface of the element that is remote from the fluid outlet apertures/perforations. The surface area of the wick clerncnt may be rnaximiscd by the dement being folded about thc wick clcmcnt support, for example, folded in a "U" shape. The arrangement also lends itself well to providing a sizeable surface area of wetted fabric for coating surfaces.
The dimensions of the apertures or perforations may be varied, depending upon, inter alia, the nature of the fluid, the desired flow control, etc. Similarly, the microfiber layer on the surface of the wick element may also be varied. Once such microfiber material that maybe used is velour, i.e. velour made from synthetic or natural fibres.
such as cotton velour.
According to a further aspect of the invention there is provided a method of applying a fluid to a surface. e.g. a glass surface, plasdc or mhTor. etc. which comprises the use of a spray assembly or wick assembly, depending on the discharge component selected and fitted as hereinbefore described.
The pressurised container assembly of the invention may be used to apply a coating of a variety of fluids which may be used in an industrial or domestic environment. The use of the wide wet wick applicator is advantageous in that the flow of the fluid from the pressurised container will be controlled, allowing a coating to be applied quickly and cost effectively as a nano-coating to glass, metal, polycarbonate and plastic substrates.
The following Examples serve to illustrate the invention without limiting its scope.
Thc invention may bc described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings.
