Abstract
An antiperspirant composition which is essentially free from aluminium-, zirconium- and zinc-based astringents, comprises (i) a film forming polymer; (ii) a plant-derived astringent; and (iii) a cosmetically acceptable carrier for the film forming polymer and plant-derived astringent. Preferably the film forming polymer is comprised of methylvinyl ether and maleic acid residues and is preferably cross-linked where the cross-links are provided by 1,9-decadiene residues. The astringent is derived from plants, preferably selected from at least one of the species Equisetum arvense, Hamamelis Virginia, Quercus infectoria and Salvia officinalis. The astringent is preferably present at a level of 0.001 to 20.00 wt% based on the total weight of the composition and the film forming polymer is preferably present at a level of 0.01 to 5 wt% based on the total weight of the composition. The antiperspirant composition may further comprise a particulate absorbent material preferably formed of a naturally occurring plant material selected from at least one of the species Oryza sativa and Bambusa arundinacease. The composition may also include a deodourant such as triethyl citrate.

ANTIPERSPIRANT FORMULATION
Field of the invention
The present invention relates to the use of formulations for the prevention of perspiration or sweating in a cosmetic formulation but with a formulation that is free of aluminium, zinc or zirconium salts. While these metal salts are effective anti-perspirant ingredients they can themselves cause health issues and as such their replacement is desirable.
Recent developments in anti-perspirant technology have included formulations that have residual activity for 24-72 hours and it is therefore also desirable that any formulation free of Al, Zn or Zr salts also have long-term efficacy.
Attempts have been made to reduce the amount of metal salt required through the introduction of film-forming polymers. Such polymers have allowed the reduction of aluminium salts, for example, from an active level of 20% aluminium salt down to a formulation with 5% aluminium salt by increasing the adhesion of the sat to the skin.
However, such methods have not beer able to eliminate the metal salt entirely. An example of such a film-forming polymer is APShield 100 from Ashland, a PVM/MA decadiene copolymer.
Anti-perspirants are often used in conjunction with other materials to absorb or mask rnalodours deriving from sweat leading to systems which also have deodorant as well as anti-perspirant properties and the two functions are often provided by a single formulation.
Absorption of malodours is often achieved by the inclusion of porous solids and liquid raw materials which absorb malodours whereas deodorants are usually in the form of fragrances or fragrance raw materials, many of which are known to either mask the nasal perception of specific malodours or to chemically bind with or modify the malodour chemical to prevent it from being detected by the nasal receptors.
The use of plant-based materials within anti-perspirant formulations is known and US 2003/0044369A1 describes a system containing a mixture of extracts from Equisetum arvense, Hamamelis virginIa, Quercus infector/a and the essential oil of Salvia off/dna/is (sage oil) used in combination with pulverized bamboo wood along with other ancillary materials.
While such a formulation is effective it does not demonstrate long-term efficacy suitable for a product intended to last for at least 24 hours.
What is desired is a formulation that is based on naturally-derived anti-perspirant materials but which has demonstrable efficacy of at least 24 hours when applied to the skin.
Summary of the Invention:
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided an antiperspirant composition which is essentially free from aluminium-, zirconium-and zinc-based astringents, the composition comprising: (i) a film forming polymer; (H) a plant-derived astringent; and (Hi) a cosmetically acceptable carrier for the film forming polymer and plant-derived astringent.
It has been surprisingly found that the composition of the present invention provides a suitably long-term antiperspirant effect without relying on undesirable aluminium-, zirconium-and zinc-based astringents. Without wishing to be bound by theory, it is believed that the film-forming polymer improves contact between the plant-derived astringent (e.g. a plant-derived oil) and the skin onto which the antiperspirant is applied and thereby improves the longevity of the antiperspirant effect provided by said astringent.
By "essentially free from" it is intended that the composition comprises less than 0.01 wt% (preferably less than 0.001 wt%) in total of aluminium-, zirconium-and zinc-based astringents. The intention is that the compositions of the invention comprise no added aluminium-, zirconium-and zinc-based astringents, and that, if they are present, then their levels would merely constitute trace impurities. For the avoidance of doubt we do not preclude the presence of other aluminium-, zirconium-and zinc-containing components which do not provide an astringent effect.
The film forming polymer is preferably comprised of methylvinyl ether and maleic acid residues. In some embodiments the film forming polymer may be cross-linked. In embodiments where the polymer is cross linked, the links may suitably be provided by decadiene (such as 1,9-decadiene) residues. The film forming polymer may be present at a level of 0.01 to 5 wt%, preferably 0.1 to 5 wt%, more preferably 1 to 5 wt%, and most preferably 2 to 3 wt% based on the total weight of the composition.
The astringent should be present in the composition of the present invention in a cosmetically effective amount. Suitaby, the astringent may be present at a level of 0.001 to 20.00 wt%, preferably 0.001 to 10.00 wt%, more preferably 0.001 to 5.00 wt% and most preferably 0.001 to 2.00 wt% based on the total weight of the composition.
The astringent is preferably present as a level of at least 0.01 wt% based on the total weight of the composition. The astringent is preferably derived from plants selected from at least one of the species EquIsetum arvense, Hamamelis Virginia, Quercus infector/a and.Sa/vfa officinalfs. The astringent may be an oil extracted from these plants.
In certain embodiments, the antiperspirant composition may further comprise a particulate absorbent material. Suitably, the absorbent material may be present at a level of S to 40 wt% based on the total weight of the composition. The absorbent material preferably comprises a naturally occurring plant material, suitably from plants preferably selected from at least one of the species Oryza sat/va and Bambusa arundinaceae. Suitably, the plant material may be present at a level of 5 to 20 wt% (preferably 10 to 20 wt%) based on the total weight of the composition. The absorbent material may comprise maltodextrin, which may suitably be present at a level of 5 to 20 wt% based on the total weight of the composition.
The antiperspirant composition may further comprise a deodorant, such as triethyl citrate. The deodorant is preferably present at a level of ito 20 wt% (preferably to 15 wt%) based on the total weight of the composition.
In certain embodiments the composition further comprises a rheology modifier and/or a suspending agent. The rheology modifier and/or suspending agent is/are preferably selected from at least one of hectorite, bentonite and kaolin. Optionally, such hectorite, bentonite and/or kaolin components may be present in the form of a derivative thereof, e.g. the disteardimonium derivative. Such components may contain aluminium.
However, since such components do not provide an astringent effect these components are not precluded from being present in the compositions of the present invention. The rheology modifier and/or suspending agent is/are preferably present at a total level of 0.01 to 5 wt% (preferably 1 to 5 wt%) based on the total weight of the composition. In some embodiments, a single agent/compound may function as both a rheology modifier and suspending agent, in which case such an agent/compound may be present at a level of 0.01 to 10 wt% (preferably 0.01 to 5 wt% and more preferably preferably ito 5 wt%) based on the total weight of the composition.
The carrier of the composition of the present invention is preferably non-aqueous, and may comprise a silicone oil such as cyclomethicone. The carrier is suitably present at a level of at least 50 wt% based on the total weight of the composition.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided an antiperspirant composition which is essentially free from aluminium-, zirconium-and zinc-based astringents, the composition comprising: (i) 0.01 to 5 wt% of a film forming polymer; (H) 0.001 to 20.00 wt% of a plant-derived astringent; (Hi) ito 20 wt% of a deodorant; (iv) 5 to 20 wt% of a particulate absorbent material; (v) a suspending agent and/or a rheology modifier present at a total level of 0.01 to Swt%; and (vi) a cosmetically acceptable carrier for components (i) to (v); the percentages by weight being based on the total weight of the composition.
The antiperspirant composition according to the first and/or second aspect may be in the form of a liquid.
According to a third aspect of the present invention there is provided an antiperspirant spray device comprising: (i) a reservoir containing an antiperspirant composition as described above in relation to the first or second aspect of the present invention; and (H) a nozzle for dispensing the contents from the reservoir.
The spray device may be in the form of an aerosol device, wherein the antiperspirant composition is present in the reservoir of the spray device at a level of 5 to 50 wt%, and wherein the reservoir further contains 50 to 95 wt% of a propellant, the percentages by weight being based on the total weight of the antiperspirant and propellant in the reservoir.
According to a fourth aspect of the present invention there is provided an antiperspirant roll-on device comprising: (i) a reservoir containing an antiperspirant composition as described above in relation to the first or second aspect of the present invention; and (H) a rotatable applicator rotatably mounted at an outlet of the reservoir for dispensing the composition contained therein.
The composition may be in the form of a solid or a paste, and formulated for use in an antiperspirant stick device. Therefore, according to a fifth aspect of the present invention there is provided an antiperspirant stick device comprising a rod of the solid or paste form composition.
The object of this invention is an anti-perspirant and deodorant cosmetic formulation with long-term efficacy of at least 24 hours. In embodiments, the composition contains a combination of a plant-derived complex of anti-perspirant materials, absorbent powder which is preferably of natural origin and a film-forming polymer to allow good contact with the skin of the plant-derived complex and other functional materials.
Suitable plant-based materials for use in the composition of the present invention include extracts from Equisetum arvense, Hamamelis virginia, Quercus infectoria and the essential oil of Salvia officInalis (sage oil).
According to an embodiment of the invention the formulation consists of 0.01 - 20.00% by weight in the final formulation of a plant-based complex, preferably the material marketed by Greentech Biotechnologies as "Anti-Perspirant Complex". This material contains a mixture of three key ingredients, an absorbent in the form of maltodextrin (89.95%), an astringent, Fquisetum arvense extract (10.00%) and SaW/a officinafis oil to mask malodours (0.05%).
It is recognised that the individual components of the complex could be added separately to the formulation and that other essential oils and astringents could be substituted for those contained in the preferred material.
The composition may comprise natural absorbent powder present at 5.00- 20.00% by weight in the final formulation and is preferably composed of pulverized rice from the species Oryza sativa which is normally supplied preserved with 0.20% cetrimonium chloride. Other absorbent powders or mixtures therein derived from pulverised plant material may be substituted from species such as Bambusa arundinaceae.
Preferred embodiments of the composition of the present invention also contain 0.01 -5.00% by weight in the final formulation of a film forming polymer, preferably the APShield PVM/MA decadiene copolynier from Ashland though other film-forming polymers which are suitable for use on skin may be substituted.
The formulation may also contain 0.01 -5.00% by weight in the final formulation a rheology modifier and suspending agent to ensure that the pulverised plant material remains suspended evenly throughout the formulation. Suitable materials are natural clays and preferably disteardimonium hectorite though other clays such as bentonite or kaolin can be used.
The formula may also contain an additional deodorant agent which is preferably, but not limited to, triethyl citrate at 1.00 -20.00% by weight in the final formulation.
The bulk of the formulation may be composed of cyclomethicone or another suitable non-aqueous solvent that is suitable for skin-contact use.
In practical use the formulation could be used as the basis of a stick, roll-on or aerosol dispenser. In the case of an aerosol dispenser the formulation can be used as described above and may be present in the aerosol can at anything between 5.00 - 50.00% along with a suitable hydrocarbon propellant.
A typical composition of an aerosol dispenser would be 10.00% of formula concentrate and 90.00% of a propellant blend of butane (78.40% of propellant), propane (19.00% of propellant) and isobutene (2.60% of propellant). In a compressed-size aerosol can of the type becoming increasingly popular the ratio may be about 19.00% of formula to about 81.00% propellant. Other ratios may be envisaged.
As well as the main components described above the formulation can optionally contain other ingredients such as preservatives, dyes or pigments, synthetic fragrance materials, natural fragrance materials or essential oils, encapsulated fragrance, deodorant materials, vitamins, sunscreens or ultra-violet light absorbers. natural oils, pearlising agents, thickening agents, or materials to modify the skin in terms of colour or feel and materials for such purposes are well known in the art.
Table 1 below shows a preferred embodiment of the invention in the form of a composition suitable for use in an aerosol device: Table 1: Preferred embodiment of the composition Material Parts by weight Cyclomethicone 6.45 Triethyl citrate 1.00 Disteardimonium hectorite 0.10 Pulverised rice powder 1.50 Anti-perspirant complex 0.70 APShield 100 0.25 TOTAL: 10.00 Preferred features described above in relation to the first aspect of the present invention also represent preferred features of the second, third, fourth and fifth aspects of the present invention (and vice versa) subject to a technical incompatibility that would prevent such a combination of preferred features. Furthermore, it will be evident to the skilled person that advantages set out above in respect of the first aspect of the present invention are also offered by the second aspect of the present invention.
