Abstract
251,008. Caldwell, A. L. M. Jan. 21, 1925. Shades: shade holders. - In a lamp shade the covering material 4, which may be silk or other textile material or paper or the like, is provided with means such as hems for detachable engagement with strip-metal or wire annular members 1, 2 which are held apart by detachable stay members 3. Different shapes of shades may be obtained by varying the number and size of the annular members, for which purpose the annular members may be in the form of split-rings the ends of which may be tapered and held in position as by means of overlapping tongues or sleeves 26 which are rounded off to pass freely through the hems. The stays 3 mav each comprise two pieces of resilient strip-metal 6, 7 held together at the centre by rivets or by a metallic sleeve 8 and having tapered ends 9 rounded off and recessed to engage the rings 1, 2. In a modified form the stays 3 may each comprise resilient metal shanks 11, 12, Fig. 4, slidable in overlapping tongues 13 and prevented from slipping by means of a screw 15, the befurcated ends of the shanks having ring-engaging recesses 16 which are sometimes formed by means of an additional spring-operated member pivotally mounted on the rear of each leg of the bifurcation. The shade may be connected to the lamp or its support by means of annular members 31, Fig. 12, having upwardly or downwardly inclined adjustable wire members 30 provided with upstanding projections 32 adapted to engage in sockets 32<a> on the sleeves 8 of the stavs 3. In a modified form the shade support comprises a central portion 35, Fig. 13, having radial arms 36 in slidable engagement with arms 37, the outer ends of which have claw-like members 39 preferably of circular cross-section adapted to embrace the stays 11 and engage with one of a pair of shoulders 41, 42, Fig. 4, according as the shade is used with a depending or upright bulb. In a further modification a ring-shaped member 48, Fig. 15, carries arms comprising parts 46 sliding within ports 47 and having hooked extremities 45 to engage with one of the rings 1, 2 of the shade. In place of the ring-shaped members 35, 48, the arms 36, 47 may be provided with depending pins to engage in sockets 45 in a member such as that shown in Fig. 17. If the frame is covered with a stiff material such as cardboard the rings 1, 2 may be channel-shaped, and they may be held together by adjustable stay members of strip-metal or wire having hooked ends to engage over the rings. Instead of using split rings the annular members may be formed from two rings fitting one within the other in frictional engagement so as to grip the material between them, and the stay members may be covered with tape or other wrapping coloured to harmonise with the material of the shade. According to the Provisional Specification the annular members may be built up from a number of sections detachably connected to form closed loops, and, in order to prevent slipping, the shanks 11, 12 may have their sliding surfaces roughened or toothed.
