Description

A JEWELLERY DISPLAY UNIT
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a jewellery display unit, more particularly a display unit for multiple items of jewellery.
Background
Users, and particularly female users, often accumulate large quantities of jewellery over a lifetime. Some pieces are only suitable for certain occasions or may come in and out of fashion, therefore often not regularly being worn.
Whilst not worn, such items are typically stored in a jewellery box or positioned on a dressing table, often not being displayed until the next time the item (s) are worn.
Jewellery hangers are available so that items can be easily found, however they often do not display items clearly merely providing a means of storing them. Also such storage systems do not always accommodate all items for example very long * 20 necklaces and watches.
: Additionally items stored on a hanger or similar holder are exposed so that they may * be easily knocked off or tangled and may become tarnished and dusty due to * exposure to the environment.
Jewellery boxes keep items protected and may have separate compartments for different items, however the items stored are hidden from view.
In contrast the present invention provides a multiple storage solution for small decorative items such as jewellery.
Summary of the Invention
According to the present invention there is provided a jewellery display unit comprising a backboard, said backboard having a plurality of levels and regions, wherein said levels provide at least one jewellery hanging facility arranged in use to extend substantially horizontally, and wherein said regions provide arrangements of jewellery hanging arranged in use to extend substantially vertically; and wherein said backboard is capable of providing independent support, and in which said levels and regions are dispersed about said backboard in use, and said unit comprises a side opening lid arranged in use to cover said backboard.
In one embodiment, the display unit comprises a backboard, a tray arranged in use to house said backboard, a frame arranged in use to surround said tray, a glazed lid arranged in use to extend over a tray, at least one modular insert comprising a level or region arranged in use to be supported on the backboard, a means of attachment to arranged in use to secure the at least one insert to the backboard wherein the inserts are adapted to support jewellery.
In preferred embodiments the display unit has the appearance of a picture frame wherein the picture is replaced by the levels and regions displaying items, such as but not exclusively, items of jewellery which items are displayed in the tray, for example necklaces, rings and earrings.
Preferably the tray serves as a platform on which the backboard, inserts, and glazed 20 lid are housed in use. Ideally the tray is rectangular with a base and four sides so as to form a container in which the other parts may be housed. * .* * . .
Typically the tray includes a means of accepting other parts wherein the backboard accepts the inserts, and the lid accepts glazing and is hinged to a frame around the tray.
In some embodiments the backbOard is attached to the tray at or on the frame by means of magnetism for examiIe wherein both the backboard and frame have magnetic properties. In other preferred embodiments the backboard is held in place on the tray by displaceable nubs or tabs on the frame.
Alternatively or additionally the backboard may be secured to the tray by clips or hook and loop means such as Velcro (Trade Mark).
In some embodiments the frame and backboard may be combined thereby removing requirement for separate parts.
Preferably the frame may include a recess provided in inner walls of the frame, in which said recess is arranged in use to accept the backboard at a predetermined set depth. Ideally the glazing is integrated with the lid so as not to fall out when opening and closing the unit wherein the lid is hinged from the tray at the frame.
Ideally the frame matches, defines or is similar in dimensions to the tray. Typically the lid may be displaced from the tray so as to access the backboard and contents and may be secured on the frame by hinging and magnetic, displaceable or lockable portions.
Advantageously the frame, backboard and tray may be formed from the same material so as to give the appearance of one part. The frame and tray may be formed from various materials such as wood, synthetic plastic or metal, being colour or otherwise decorated in some styles depending upon user preference.
* " Preferably the lid may be hinged to the frame so that the lid may be opened so as to easily open and close the unit preferably in a convenient manner of a book.
* 20 Ideally lid and frame may be lockably attached when required, for example with a key mechanism and/or hook so as to prevent the unit from opening whilst on display and : unauthorised entry.
Typically however the frame may be locked to the tray by means of a clip or magnetic mechanism so as to facilitate easy opening when required.
It is envisaged that the glazing is formed from a transparent material such as glass in order to be able view the unit contents in use.
Typically the display unit is of a depth so as to allow for the items to be positioned between the backboard and glazing. For example 15mm depth may be required to display earrings or greater than 15mm for some costume jewellery or watches.
Ideally the unit is sized so as to be able to display all jewellery such as necklaces, earrings1 rings and watches, thereby the display unit may be provided in sizes so as to readily accommodate most items In preferred embodiments the backboard accepts a plurality of inserts arranged in use to receive jewellery items. Preferably the backboard and inserts further comprise magnetised portions so that the inserts may be removably attached to the backboard For example the entire backboard and inserts may be magnetised In some embodiments the inserts may be stored on a reverse side of the backboard when not in use. It is envisaged that only the inserts' back has an exposed magnetic surface with the insert's front face being for example covered in fabric.
In other embodiments the inserts may be attached to the backboard by hooks, push fittings or hook and loop means such as Velcro (Trade Mark) or hooks and eyes.
Advantageously this also enables the inserts to be positioned so as to suit the user's requirements, for example to suit particular types or size of jewellery.
Additionally the inserts are provided in various shapes and sizes so as to hold particular items. For example inserts may include a recess for holding a ring, a bar for items such as earrings to be hung from or may include a hook on which necklaces or bracelets may be dangled.
* * 20 Ideally the inserts are cushioned or padded so as to provide a protective surface for * .. the items. * * * ***.
Typically the inserts may be square or rectangular so that they may be aligned with others in order to allow easy dispersal to fill the backboard.
It may be envisaged however that for aesthetic purposes the frame and inserts may be available in other shapes. For example in other embodiments the inserts may be round, oval, or any other multi angled shape such as a star.
In some embodiments the insert(s) may be patterned, embossed or decorated in order to be a feature of the display shown in the uniL In preferred embodiments the display unit may further comprise a mount such as for example a stand arranged in use to enable the display to be rested on a surface.
The display unit may be arranged in use to engage a mount, such as for example a hook, so as to enable the display to be hung on a wall.
In preferred embodiments the unit is at least 3scmx5Ocm so as to be able to accommodate all types of jewellery but it may be envisaged that smaller or larger units may be available for specialist items or locations, for example in a museum a larger unit may be provided to display jewellery from a particular person or era.
