Abstract

An expansion bolt for attaching insulation cladding to a building comprises threaded shank. A plastics sleeve and a rubber sleeve surround a portion of the shank, the sleeves being arranged between two nuts which threadedly engage the shank. Turning of the shank, in use, causes the nuts to rotate and move axially along the shaft to cause the rubber sleeve to compress axially and thereby expand radially.

Description

Page -1 Insulation Bolt The Insulation Bolt is used to attach wall insulation cladding to a building without compromising its insulation properties.
Increasingly secondary wall insulation is being used to clad the outside of buildings. This is to provide added thermal protection and is generally used where cavity insulation is not possible. The process involves attaching sheets of metal or plastic material to the outside of an existing building, with a layer of insulation between it and the existing external wall. Currently this is done by drilling through the external insulation sheet and into the wall, the sheet is then attached using metal anchor bolts, or wall plugs and screws. However, an increasing problem is that this method of application often causes either cracks in the surface of the wall, or deforms the external cladding as the bolt draws tight, leaving gaps between the bolt or screw and the external cladding. This leads to a loss of thermal protection around these areas, which can be demonstrated with thermal imaging cameras.
The Insulation Bolt overcomes this problem by providing a strong but structurally gentle anchor in the wall and in addition this fastening solution does not cause the head of the bolt to be drawn into the wall any further than the initial bolt placement, thereby maintaining the thermal integrity of the cladding.
The Insulation Bolt is installed in the following way: 1) A hole is drilled through the external cladding and insulation, and into the wall 2) The bolt is fully inserted into this hole by hand 3) A standard screw driver is then used to turn the bolt, which causes the rubber sleeve to be compressed and materially engages with the wall The engagement mechanism works by the lateral expansion of the rubber sleeve through its longitudinal compression by two counter-threaded nuts and a plastic sleeve as the bolt is turned with a screw driver (Fig. 1).
Since the rubber sleeve expands laterally it does not draw the bolt towards the wall, hence it does not deform the external cladding, and thereby does not compromise the insulation. Also, since the rubber sleeve expands gradually and radially, and moulds around any deformities in the wall, it does not cause excess radial pressure in the wall so preventing cracking and shattering of the wall material.
