Abstract

A signal device for automotive vehicles (Cars, buses, coaches and jeeps) for optimising signal braking, indicating turning of the vehicle and declaration of an emergency situation. The device has three bodies facing rearward, installed near the rear glass of the vehicles. Each device has a base to lamp housing with cover lenses. Light disposed through the lenses will project the signaling on rear glass. The Centrally installed device (1) (lamp housing) for projecting braking on central top and bottom of rear glass in red colour rectangle block and the attached sub bodies (lamp housing) lit up when collision occurs projecting declaration of an emergency situation in form of square red colour block partially on centre of rear glass of vehicles. While the other two devices (2&3) installed one on right and one left, close to rear roof pillar of vehicles, lighting arrow shaped lenses projecting turning indication on rear glass in Amber colour curb arrow. The light transmitted through the lenses cover is directed on the rear glass of the vehicle projecting optical light signal on rear glass of the vehicles. The device powered directly from the existing vehicle's electrical system.

Description

Title: B.E.T Optical Signal indicator for vehicles
Description:
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[091] The field of the invention applies to automotive vehicle signal lights. In particular, the invention is focussed on signal lights and a method of using the optical signal lights to signal the braking of an automotive vehicle a.s well as indicating the intention to turn the vehicle in a certain direction. The signal lights should have the visibility of being seen from a. distance, ideally curbing the number of collisions at the rear of the vehicle. Most importantly, the invention attempts to minimise further collisions and save lives of many other commuters in event of accidents by signaling (declaration of emergency).
[092] Rear signal light systems for automotive vehicles are well known in the art as illustrated in the following U.S. patents: Accordingly, in traffic hazard situa.tions where lost seconds or fractions of seconds become critical, the linkages between an accelerator pedal and the signal lamp switch create unnecessary lost motion, inertia and consequent delayed reaction times.
[093] Some of the previous attempts to position a relatively high tail light are as follows: [094] U.S. Pat. No. 3,225,185 discusses a mounting for a marker light on a truck trailer.
[095] U.S. Pat. No. 5,211,466 discloses a vehicle rear signal light assembly for mounting above the rear window of an automobile.
[096] U.S. Pat. No. 2,400,655 shows a guide for public safety of vehicles and pedestrians.
[097] U.S. Pa.t. No. 3,564,497 teaches a. light and horn vehicle signaling system for a tmck trailer.
[098] U.S. Pat. No. 4,297,675 discloses an underdeck supplemental right turn signal for semitrailers.
[099] U.S. Pat. No. 4,800,471 shows a brake light attachment for use with a trailer hitch.
[010] U.S. Pat. No. 5,073,768 discloses a multiple array of signal lights mounted below a truck tailgate.
[011] U.S. Pat. No. 4,622,494 teaches a signaling device mounted below a bus rear window.
[012] U.S. Pat. No. 5,245,251 shows a daytime running light convenience feature.
[013] U.S. Pat. No. 4,751,493 teaches a kit for retrofitting automobiles with deceleration warning lights.
[014] U.S. Pat. No. 3,440,415 shows a trailer interior and exterior lighting system.
[015] U.S. Pat. No. 3,956,632 discusses a multiple purpose oscillating arm electromechanical vehicle signal device.
[016] However, none of the above patents teach separate turning indication, braldng and declaration of an emergency through optica.1 lights signal. The light transmitted through the lenses cover is directed towards the rear glass of the vehicle projecting optical light signal on rear glass of the vehicle. Thus, no known device exists to signal: braking, the intention of turning, and declaration of an emergency to a distant viewer.
STATEMENT OF THE INVENTION
[017] The invention is directed to signal lights for indicating braking. indicating intended turning in a certain direction and for signaling declaration of an emergency of the vehicle.
Essentially, the invention comprises of a device consisting of three separate devices that are each positioned in centre and on either side near to rear glass of the vehicle.
[018] Each cover on the front of the device (1) (lamp housing) has transparent coloured lenses positioned in centre near rear glass surrounded by four lenses, two in middle of the device rectangular in shape and red in colour, to indicate braking of the vehicle. And one each on the either side, square in sha.pe and red in colour to indicate declaration of an emergency situation which are connected through a flasher to push button (switch) to be fitted in vehicle front bumper cover a.s well a.s on either side of the vehicle, when pressed on collision will flash light indicating declaration of an emergency situation to following vehicles. The other two devices on the either side comprise of one lens each of curved arrow shape and these two devices are positioned nearer to the back roof pillar. This lens is of Amber colour and when lit, indicates the intention of the vehicle operator to turn the vehicle in that direction.
[019] The signals are connected to existing vehicle electrical circuits. Accordingly, the braking signals in device (1) are wired to the brake pedal circuit. Therefore, when the vehicle operator actuates the brake pedal, not only do the regular brake lights lit, but the braking signals of the device are activated and lighted respectively. The indication of intention to turn signal of either device (2&3) is also wired to the existing electrical circuit that is activated by the vehicle operator moving the turn signal to indicate either an impending left or right turn.
[020] The device comprises of three separate devices that are each installed!positioned in centre and in lined one on the right and one on the left sides near to rear glass of the vehicle. The three devices (lamp housing) having an adjustable arrangement, and can be angled accordingly. The bottom of lamp housing has base frame which are hooked to the base structure, thereof the light dispersed through lens cover of lamp housing falls on middle line of rear glass of the vehicle providing sufficient visibility of optical signal display on the rear glass for following vehicles arrayed behind the first vehicle.
[021] Each device has a base that is attached to the vehicle. The lamp housing contains lighting sources and reflectors to concentrate and direct the light dispersed through lenses cover from the lighting sources.
[022] A slide covers the top of the three devices (lamp housing), to be used when the lighting sources are to be replaced and the reflectors plastered on all over the walls of lamp housing.
[023] The lamp housing comprising an adjustable arrangement of light source (bulb) in all three devices of device where the optical signal light dispersed through the lenses to create the signaling adjusting to the size of the rear glass of device in installed vehicle.
[024] The interior of the housing is hollow, the interior side walls includes attached light source (bulb) cha.mber which runs on ramp to slide the light source. The interior of the housing, having reflector casing on interior walls of all lamp housing, so that the light reflects from all sides and pass through the framed lenses.
[025] The necessary action required to achieve the operation of the signal lights of the invention is triggered by the activation of current vehicle pedals or switches. No additional thought or action is required by the operator, which may be particularly important in a situation requiring immediate action. Thus, importa.nt information from the signal lights can be transmitted to the following driver whose view may be blocked by interspersed vehicles between the indicating vehicle and the following driver. Ideally, rea.r end collisions will be reduced by use of this invention as compared to the known signal lights and methods of use.
[026] The invention can advantageously be employed for installation on new vehicles.
The invention is also useful to retrofit existing automotive vehicles, including cars, buses, coaches and jeeps. While directed to all types of automotive vehicles.
[027] For a more complete understanding of the present invention, reference is made to the following detailed description when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings wherein like reference characters refer to like elements throughout the several views.
