Description

JEWELLERY PIECE
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a jewellery piece and more specifically to an earring. More especially, the invention relates to an earring that has attachment mechanisms to allow further jewellery elements to be attached thereto.
Background to the invention
Earrings are in common usage across the world. The chosen design is a matter of personal taste at the time with a view to the occasion on which it is to be worn. Wearers tend to have a number of different earrings carrying different designs 10 from which they can choose depending on the particular circumstances.
The present invention seeks to provide an earring that has a base structure with at least one discrete attachment mechanism to which other jewellery elements can easily be attached or detached to change the appearance of earring at any time.
Whilst the embodiments described relate to an earring it is appreciated that the attachment mechanism may be equally applicable to other items of jewellery such as a necklace or bracelet.
Summary of invention
According to one aspect of the invention there is a provided a jewellery piece having a main structure having an inside surface generally hidden from view when the jewellery piece is worn by a user, the surface carrying at least one attachment element also hidden from view when the jewellery piece is worn, to which at least one further jewellery element can be attached to extend beyond the boundaries of the main structure.
Preferably the jewellery piece is design to be worn as an earring.
Preferably the main structure is generally circular. Preferably the inside surface is concave.
Preferably the or each attachment element comprises is attached on or near to the peripheral edge of the main structure.
Preferably the or each attachment element comprises an arm that extends inwardly over the inside surface of the main structure.
Preferably the or each jewellery element includes an eyelet to be received over a respective attachment element.
Brief description of the drawings
Embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying figure which shows a jewellery piece constructed in accordance with the invention.
Detailed description of preferred embodiments
Figure 1 shows a jewellery piece in the form of an earring. The earring shown has a generally circular main body structure 2 with an inside surface 4 that is flat or concave.
By "inside surface" it is meant the surface that faces towards to the wearer's skin when the earring is worn. As such, the inside surface 4 is not visible to another individual at the time the earring is being worn.
Four attachment members 6 extend inwardly from the inside of the peripheral edge 8 of the main body 2. Any number of attachment members may be included. 20 The attachment members 6 may be attached to the main body inside its periphery rather than along the edge 8.
Each attachment member 6 has a simply construction and comprises arm 8 that upstands from the main body 2 leading to a shoulder 10 from which the member bends inwardly to then extend partly over the inside surface 4. Each member 6 has a further curve or kink 12 such that the member 6 acts as a hook to receive an eyelet at the end of a chain at the other end of which is a different jewellery element (not shown).
The eyelet of the or each jewellery element is held within the concave section 14 of the attachment member 6 so that the chain and jewellery element dangles down from the main body 2 to be visible to others and to thereby alter the overall appearance of the earring.
The chain of the jewellery element may be sufficiently short to remain behind the main body 2 so not to be visible.
Any number of jewellery elements can be chosen at any one time. Each further jewellery element may have the same design or they could themselves carry different individual designs.
Each individual jewellery element may easily attached or detached by threading the eyelet over the appropriate attachment member 6, depending on the mood of the wearer and the circumstances they find themselves.
Each attachment member 6 curves inwardly for two primary reasons. Firstly, this ensures that the attachment is not visible as the attachment can otherwise detract 15 from the aesthetic appearance of the earring.
Secondly, the curved design ensures comfort to the wearer as there is no upwardly extending tip or point pressed against the skin of the wearer.
Each attachment member 6 may be made from the same material as the main body 2 (so to be an extension of it) or may be made from a separate pliable zo material for added comfort.
