The core is preferably metal, more preferably steel and most preferably corrosion-resistant steel. The metal core may comprise strands of metal in a woven, knitted and/or random arrangement or may comprise a perforated sheet or expanded mesh. Alternatively the core may comprise or include a synthetic polymer such as polyamide or non-metal fibres such as glass or carbon fibres. The body may be formed of sheet material deposited on opposite sides of the core, which may be connected at the periphery of the core or through the core perforations by either adhesive or fusing. Alternatively the body may be an integral component encapsulating the core and may be a moulding in which the core is incorporated. The body may comprise an elastomeric polymer and the adhesive may be a coating, integrated with the body or a double sided tape applied to the body. The substrate may be in the form of an elongate tape supplied on a roll. Also included are claims to repairing a building using such a flexible substrate.

Description

Materials and method for effecting repairs to buildings The present invention relates to materials and method for effecting repairs to buildings.
There is a frequent demand to effect rapid, short-term repairs to cover gaps and defects in buildings. It is particularly preferable that such repairs offer substantial resistance to the ingress of animals including rodent pests. A particular challenge is preventing the ingress of rats, which have a strength and determination that enables them to penetrate significant barriers. Although many ad hoc measures are taken to make rapid repairs, such as application of wooden patches or plastic sheeting, these are often of insufficient integrity to prevent ingress of rats for more than a very short period and may require the use of tools such as a drill to secure any repair with mechanical fixings. Alternatively wire wool, mesh or similar material may be used by pushing it into gaps in the building fabric; however, it may be tugged out by persistent rodents.
An aim of this invention is to provide materials and methods for making rapid, short-20 term repairs to defects in buildings that can be used to prevent an effective obstacle to the ingress of vermin.
From a first aspect, this invention provides a flexible substrate for use in effecting a repair to a building, the substrate comprising: a flexible laminar body, which body has an inner and an outer surface, at least one of which surface is at least partially covered be a high-tack adhesive; and a core of high-strength material encapsulated within the body, extending in a plane between the inner and outer surfaces and having through holes through which material of the body pass.
The presence of the high-strength core can make a substrate embodying the invention 5 substantially impervious to attack be pests such as rats, which its encapsulation within the body protects the core and provides a gas-tight and liquid-tight barrier.
Preferably, the material of the core is metal, most preferably steel. In embodiments in which the metal is steel, advantageously, it is a corrosion-resistant steel such as stainless steel or galvanised steel. The metal core may be formed from strands of metal in one or more of a woven, knitted or randomly-distributed arrangement (the holes being constituted by spaces between the strands). Alternatively or additionally, the metal core may include a perforated sheet of metal or from a sheet of expanded metal mesh (the holes being formed in the perforation or expansion of the metal, as the case maybe].
In substitution for or in addition to metal in the options set forth in the last-preceding paragraph, the material of the core may include a synthetic polymer, such as a polyamide, or non-metal fibres such as glass fibres or carbon fibres.
The body may be formed from two sheets of material disposed upon opposing surfaces of the core. The sheets may be interconnected at the periphery of the core and/or through holes within the core by adhesive. Alternatively or additionally, sheets may be fused together at the periphery of the core and/or through holes within the core. For example, the sheets may be welded or co-moulded. The sheets may be similar or they may differ from one another in respect of one or more of their material composition and their size in one or more dimension.
Alternatively, the body may be an integral component that encapsulates the core. For example, the body may be a moulding into which the core is incorporated.
The body is preferably partly or wholly formed of a polymer and most preferably an elastomeric polymer.
Adhesive may be provided on one surface or on both surfaces of the body. The form taken by the adhesive may include adhesive integrated within the body, a coating on 5 the surface of the body or double-sided adhesive tape applied to the surface of the body. Where adhesive is provided on both surfaces, it may have the same form (as defined in the last-preceding sentence) on the two surfaces or it may have different forms. Preferably, prior to use, a removable cover sheet is carried on the or each surface of the body (as the case may be) to protect the adhesive from environmental contamination 10 and unintended contact In embodiments supplied in the form of a roll, the adhesive of one (potentially, the only one) may be so covered.
Substrate material embodying the invention may be shaped as an elongate tape of substantially constant width, and may conveniently be supplied as a roll.
From a second aspect, the invention provides a method of effecting a repair on a building comprising the step a. of securing to a building one or more pieces of substrate material embodying the first aspect of the invention by means of the adhesive on one surface of the substrate material, whereby a defect in the building is covered by the substrate material.
Typically, prior to step a., a cover sheet is removed from adhesive on the one surface of 20 the body.
The method may further include a step b. of securing a covering component to the substrate material by means of the adhesive on a second surface of the substrate material. Such a component may be a decorative component to conceal or reduce any detrimental appearance of the repair.
Typically, subsequent to step a., and prior to step b., a cover sheet is removed from adhesive on the second surface of the body.
In methods in which more than one piece of substrate material is secured to a building, preferably at least one piece of substrate material overlaps and is secured by adhesive to an adjacent piece of substrate material.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described in detail, by way of example, and 5 with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figures 1 and 2 show the structure of a flexible substrate material being a first embodiment of the invention; Figures 3 and 4 show the structure of a flexible substrate material being a second embodiment of the invention; and Figures 5 and 6 show alternative core components for use in embodiments of the invention.
With reference to Figures 1 and 2, a first embodiment of the invention is a flexible substrate that has a body 10 that is formed from two sheets 12, 14 of elastomeric material. Between the sheets 12, 14, there is a core 16.
The first and second sheets 12, 14 are similarly dimensioned; they are rectangular with a typical width of 20 to 300mm and an arbitrary length. The flexible substrate can be supplied as a roll coiled about an axis parallel to its width.
The core 16 is a strip of steel of width approximately 80% of the width of the first and second sheets 12, 14. In this embodiment, the core 16 is formed as a mesh of woven 20 steel wire, as shown in Figure 5.
The sheets 12, 14 are bonded together such that the core 16 is completely encapsulated between them. In addition to being bonded together along a strip laterally to each side of the core 16, the sheets 12, 14 are bonded together through the core 16 in the spaces between the woven wires of the core 16. This provides the substrate with strength and integrity and isolates the core 16 from the environment in which the substrate is installed.
With reference to Figures 3 and 4, a second embodiment of the invention has a body 20 that is formed as a single piece of flexible elastomeric material within which a core 5 22 is embedded. The body 20 may be formed by extrusion over the core 22.
In this embodiment, the core 22 is an expanded metal mesh, as show in Figure 6. During extrusion of the body 20, its material passes through the holes in the mesh, whereby the body 20 becomes a single, integral component that encapsulates the core 22. This provides the substrate with strength and integrity and isolates the core 22 from the environment in which the substrate is installed.
The material from which the cores 16, 22 are constructed can be interchanged between the embodiments and other core materials and constructions may be used in either embodiment.
Either embodiment incorporates one or more adhesive systems. In one arrangement, the body 10, 20 is coated with adhesive one one or both of its surfaces. Upon manufacture, the adhesive is covered by a protective sheet which can be peeled from the adhesive to expose it for use. In another arrangement, double-sided adhesive tape is applied to one or both surfaces. A protective sheet is provided on an outward-facing surface of the double-sided tape which can be peeled from the tape to expose its adhesive surface for use.
Either embodiment may be provided in the form of a roll or as a sheet.
To effect a repair to a building, a piece of substrate of a suitable size to completely cover the area to be repaired is obtained. This can be done by selecting a suitably-sized sheet of substrate, cutting a sheet to size, or cutting a length off a roll. Material of the building surrounding a damaged area is cleaned to remove as much dust and grease as possible. The protective sheet is removed from one side of the body 10, 20 of the substrate to expose the adhesive. The exposed adhesive of the substrate is then pressed against the material of the building in a position that the substrate covers the damage that is to be repaired, the adhesive maintaining the substrate in position.
Optionally, several pieces of substrate material may be used, preferably overlapping, 5 to cover a large area of damage. In such cases, pieces of substrate will be adhered to adjacent pieces.
As an optional additional step, where adhesive is provided on two sides of the substrate, the protective sheet on the exposed surface is removed, and a cover piece is applied to the exposed adhesive. The cover piece may be functional (for example, to enhance resistance to attack by pests or to contamination) and/or it may be aesthetic, to ensure that the appearance of the repair matches or complements the appearance of the surrounding building material.
