Abstract

The invention relates to a sealing assembly for one or more cables located in a structure and in particular a structure in the form of a wind turbine, said apparatus known as cable hang off apparatus. The apparatus includes first and second housings and sealing means and engagement means which in combination allow a seal to be achieved at relatively high pressures between first and second sides of the structure in which the assembly is formed and, at the same time, ensures the required mechanical connection of the one or more cables with the assembly and hence the structure, with a channel formed by said housings which has no interfaces in the channel parallel to the path of the one or more cables and thereby provides and improved sealed assembly and protection for said cables.

Claims (12)

Claims
1. Apparatus in the form of a hang off assembly for use in the location and retention of one or more cables with respect to a structure, the said one or more cables pass from a first side of the structure to a second side of the structure, said assembly including a first housing for location in an aperture, said housing having a channel through which one or more cables pass, a first plate arrangement which locates around the said one or more cables, a clamping arrangement which locates around the said one or more cables, a second plate arrangement which locates around the said one or more cables and said first and second plate arrangements are axially offset with respect to the longitudinal axis of the one or more cables and wherein a second housing is provided with a channel through which the one or more cables pass and which receives sealing elements to substantially seal the space between the external wall of the one or more cables and the interior wall of said second housing.
2. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the first and second housings are engaged together to form a substantially continuous channel for the one or more cables to pass therealong.
3. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the first and second housings are engaged by moving flanges at the respective ends of the housings together.
4. Apparatus according to any of the preceding claims wherein the walls of the respective channels of the first and/or the second housings are continuous around their circumference.

Apparatus according to any of the preceding claims wherein the one or more cables are passed through the channel of the first housing and the outer wall of the one or more cables is removed and the cores of each of the one or more cables are splayed so that the cores are spaced apart as they pass through the channel in the second housing.
6. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the sealing elements are provided in a number of dimensions and sizes to allow the same to be selected for the particular installation and then packed into the channel in the second housing to provide the required sealing effect.
7. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein one or both of the first and second plate arrangements include two plate parts which are brought together to lie around the one or more cables.
8. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the clamping arrangement includes first and second clamp parts and securing means which allow the clamp parts to be brought together and clamped around one or more cables.
9. Apparatus according to any of the preceding claims wherein the said second side of the structure is substantially sealed from the first side and the hangoff assembly forms a barrier between the first side and the second side.
10. Apparatus according to any of the preceding claims wherein the second housing is formed of a nylon-based material.
11. Apparatus according to any of the preceding claims wherein the structure is part of a wind turbine.
12. Apparatus according to claim 11 wherein the said wind turbine is installed in an offshore location.
