Discharging. - The molten material from a cupola furnace n is discharged through a channel b into a receiving chamber a provided with skimgates d, f serving respectively to separate the molten iron from the slag and the slag from the ash. The metal is delivered through an aperture c into a fore-hearth g and the slag escapes through an opening e. The ash is retained between the gates d, f whence it may be removed by opening the cover l or a lateral discharge aperture may be provided. If the fore-hearth g or the slag-receiving vessel are to be exposed to the furnace pressure the appropriate gate d or f is apertured as shown at m. A tap-hole o is provided for emptying the receiver a. A flue q, connected at the upper end to the cupola is arranged in the wall of the fore-hearth and communicates with the latter, near the bottom, by an opening r, this flue serving, until the aperture r is covered by the molten metal, to form a circuit for the hot furnace gases which preheat the fore-hearth g.
