Description

IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO DECKING
This invention relates to a clip which is securable to a deck board that is to be installed onto a decking frame, a deck board which is securable to a clip to install the deck board onto a decking frame, and to a decking assembly including a plurality of such clips and deck boards.
It is known to install a plurality of deck boards onto a decking frame (also known as a sub-frame or sub-assembly) so as to form a substantially flat decking platform. Such a decking platform is generally found in a garden of, e.g. a domestic property, and may be used to support garden furniture.
Deck boards are typically installed by arranging the deck boards adjacent to one another to form the desired decking platform and then inserting a number of screws through the deck boards and into the frame. Such an installation technique can mean that it is often difficult for an installer to correctly align the deck boards relative to one another and the installer has to make sure to hold the deck boards in place while inserting the screws.
The deck boards may be installed using a tongue and groove fixing arrangement with the screws being inserted through the intersecting tongue and groove. The deck boards themselves may be formed to have alternating tongue and grooves at either edge, or a separate T-shaped component may be provided to provide the tongue to the grooves of adjacent deck boards. In either case, the deck boards are free to move laterally relative to one another and so the installer must hold the deck boards in place while inserting the screws.
There is therefore a need for an improved installation technique to install a decking platform.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a clip securable to a deck board to be installed onto a decking frame, the clip comprising a clip body having first and second body portions, the first body portion including a fastener portion having a fastener surface and being configured to receive a fastener to secure the clip to a decking frame, the second body portion including a locking portion configured to be engageable with a deck board to secure the clip to the deck board by preventing lateral movement of the clip away from the deck board, wherein the first and second body portions are positioned relative to one another to expose the fastener surface beyond the edge of the deck board when the locking portion is secured to the deck board.
The clip including such a fastener surface means that a fastener, e.g. a screw, is inserted through a component other than the deck board itself. Thus, the deck board is free from fastenings which, if included on the deck board, may protrude (which can be aesthetically unpleasing) and also snag over time (which may become a hazard). Having a separate clip component which is secured to the decking frame also means that the clip can help accommodate for unevenness that might be present or occur in the decking frame.
Meanwhile, the clip having such a locking portion means that the clip is held in place relative to the deck board so that the installer has both hands free to insert the fastener into the fastener portion. For example, the installer would typically have to hold a drill (or other appropriate tool) with one hand and a screw (or other appropriate fastener) with the other hand. By being able to secure the clip to the deck board, the installer can have the clip held by the deck board in the desired position without having to hold it or the deck board himself. This is also particularly useful because a plurality of clips would typically be used to install a decking platform, and so the installer can secure several clips to the deck board in desired positions for the fasteners without worrying that any of them will come away from the deck board.
Moreover, the first and second body portions being positioned relative to one another to expose the fastener surface beyond the edge the deck board allows easy access to the fastener surface by the installer to insert the fastener once the clip is secured to the deck board.
Preferably the fastener surface is angled to form a slope extending from the top of the first body portion laterally outwards relative to the clip body as it extends towards the bottom of the first body portion.
The fastener surface being so angled means that the installer can come at the fastener portion at a slight angle. Otherwise, the edge of the board gets in the way when trying to insert a fastener. This is especially the case when using a tool such as a drill which is wider than the width of the screw, so the drill would end up being blocked by the edge of the deck board. It also means that the width of the clip does not have to be overly large to allow for extra space for access to the fastener portion, which may result in a large gap between adjacent deck boards.
Optionally the locking portion includes a first locking member configured to engage with a portion of the deck board upon presenting the clip body laterally to the deck board with the clip being in an intermediate position, and a second locking member configured to engage with another portion of the deck board upon forceable movement of the clip body from the intermediate position to a secured position, wherein the first and second locking members are configured to prevent lateral movement of the clip away from the deck board when the clip is in the secured position.
to The inclusion of such first and second locking members means that the clip can be secured to the deck board without need to move or angle the deck board, which would typically be secured to the decking frame at its other edge. For example, the first and second locking members may include barbed members which hooked onto the deck board in turn to secure the clip to the deck board.
In such an embodiment, the orientation of the clip body in the intermediate position differs from the orientation of the clip body in the secured position. As such, the clip body can be angled to engage the first locking member with the deck board, and then changed position to allow the second locking member to engage with the deck board.
The clip body may extend between the first and second body portions to create a spacer to space adjacent deck boards installed using the clip.
Such an arrangement means that a predetermined and consistent gap between boards can be achieved without the need for another separate component. Having a small gap between deck boards is important for the drainage of surface water and for ventilation through the decking platform.
Optionally the first body portion includes a first abutment surface extending towards the second body portion such that the first abutment surface extends underneath the fastener surface, the first abutment surface being configured to be abuttable with a portion of a further deck board presented to the second portion of the clip body.
The first abutment surface extending underneath the fastener portion and being abuttable with a portion of a further deck board presented to the first body portion of the clip body means that the first abutment surface helps to position the further deck board relative to the clip. The further deck board may be slid into abutment with the first abutment surface, and the pressure from the fastener onto the first abutment surface would help to hold the further deck board in place.
Optionally the second body portion includes a second abutment surface extending from the locking portion towards the first body portion and being configured to be abuttable with a portion of the deck board being secured to the clip.
Such a second abutment surface helps to locate the clip with the deck board when securing the clip to the board.
Moreover, each of the first and second abutment surfaces is angled towards one another in a V-shape.
The first and second abutment surfaces being so angled helps with installation of the deck boards where the decking frame may be uneven. This is because the angled abutment surfaces provide some leeway in such uneven surfaces.
The locking portion may be configured to permit slidable movement of the clip body along the length of the deck board.
Such an arrangement means that the clip can be secured to the deck board but moved along the length of the deck board to a desired position, e.g. to line up with joists of the decking frame.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a deck board securable to a clip to install the deck board onto a decking frame, the deck board comprising first and second decking surfaces and an installation profile extending between the first and second decking surfaces, the installation profile including a locking portion configured to be engageable with a locking portion of a clip to permit securing of the clip to the deck board by preventing lateral movement of the clip away from the deck board.
The advantages of the clip of the first aspect of the invention and its embodiments applies mutatis mutandis to the deck board of the second aspect of the invention and its embodiments.
The clip and deck board are specifically adapted to be used together. In particular, they each have locking portions that engage with one another to permit securing of the clip to the deck board by preventing lateral movement of the clip away from the deck board.
The installation profile may include an open portion configured to receive the locking portion of a clip.
The installation profile including an open portion to receive the locking portion of the clip means that a portion of the clip lies within the installation profile, which helps to narrow the gap between adjacent deck boards in an assembly.
Optionally the locking portion includes first and second locking members located in the open portion of the installation profile, the first and second locking members being engageable with the locking portion of the clip to permit securing of the clip to the deck board wherein the first and second locking members prevent lateral movement of the clip away from the deck board.
Such locking members permit a clip to be secured to the deck board so that it is held in place relative to the board.
Preferably the installation profile is symmetrical about a central axis extending along the width of the deck board.
The installation profile being so symmetrical means that the deck board can be installed either way around, i.e. with either the first or second decking surfaces forming the decking platform.
Optionally the first and second decking surfaces have different decorative appearances to one another.
The first and second decking surfaces having different decorative appearances means that they can be installed either way around to a chosen decorative appearance.
According to a third aspect of the invention there is provided a decking assembly securable onto a decking frame, the decking assembly including a plurality of clips as described hereinabove, and a plurality of deck boards as described hereinabove arranged adjacent to one another so that the decking surfaces of the deck boards combine to define a decking platform, and wherein adjacent deck boards have a clip located therebetween.
The advantages of the clip and deck board of the first and second aspects of the invention and their respective embodiments applies mutatis mutandis to the decking assembly of the third aspect of the invention and its embodiments.
Preferably adjacent deck boards have a plurality of clips located therebetween, the clips being secured along the length of one of the adjacent deck boards.
The inclusion of such a plurality of clips provides better securing of the deck board to the decking frame.
Preferred embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of non-limiting examples, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a clip according to a first embodiment of the invention; Figure 2 is a side view of the clip shown in Figure 1; Figures 3a, 3b and 3c show the clip of Figure 1 being secured to a deck board; Figure 4 is a perspective view of a deck board according to a second embodiment of the invention; Figure 5 is a side view of the deck board shown in Figure 4 Figure 6 is a side view of a decking assembly according to a third embodiment of the invention; and Figure 7 is a perspective view of the decking assembly of Figure 6 in situ.
A clip according to the first embodiment of the invention is shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3a to 3c and is designated generally by reference numeral 10.
It will be understood that where relative terms such as "vertical" "horizontal" "top" "bottom", etc. are used, they are used in the context of the clip 10 being in situ, i.e. in the upright position shown in the figures.
Starting with Figures 1 and 2, the clip 10 includes a clip body 12 which has first and second body portions 14, 16. The first and second body portions 14, 16 are essentially on opposing sides of the clip body 12 as you look at the clip 10 side on (i.e. from the side view as shown in Figure 2). As will become apparent when the clip 10 is described in more detail below, when the clip 10 is secured to a deck board, the first body portion 14 is the side which is generally exposed (i.e. is accessible to an installer), while the second body portion 16 is the side which is generally hidden (i.e. not accessible to an installer) by the deck board.
The first body portion 14 includes a fastener portion 18 which, in this embodiment, has a fastener hole 20 formed in the clip body 12. The fastener hole 20 has first and second hole portions 22a, 22b. The first hole portion 22a is formed through the top end of the clip body 12 to a first depth, and the second hole portion 22b is continued on from the first hole portion 22a and is formed completely through the clip body 12. The first hole portion 22a has a larger diameter than that of the second hold portion 22b. In this embodiment, the diameter of the first hole portion 22a is 10 mm and the diameter of the second hole portion 22b is 6 mm.
The fastener hole 20 is where, in use, a fastener (e.g. a screw) would be inserted. In other embodiments of the invention, the second hole portion 22b is formed through the clip body 12 to a second depth (i.e. without clearing all the way through the clip body 12). In such embodiments, an installer could use either a self-tapping screw which itself forms a hole through the second hole portion 22b as it is being inserted, or instead pre-drill a hole through the second hole portion 22b before inserting a fastener. In any event, the wider diameter of the first hole portion 22a provides space for a fastener tool such as a drill.
In further embodiments, the fastener portion 18 may instead not include a hole at all. Instead, the fastener portion 18 may be a small indent or other means to provide a target for the fastener to be drilled (or otherwise screwed) through the clip body 12.
The fastener portion 18, in particular the fastener hole 20, is formed on a fastener surface 21 which is angled so as to form a slope 23 from the top of the first body portion 14 laterally outwards relative to the clip body 12 as it extends towards the bottom of the first body portion 14. The starting point A of the slope 23 is therefore closer to the second body portion 16 than the end point B. In this embodiment, the slope 23 is angled at 135° from vertical, as indicated by a The second body portion 16 includes a locking portion 24 which, in this embodiment, includes first and second locking members 26a, 26b in the form of barb members 28a, 28b.
The barb members 28a, 28b are positioned in line with one another along a vertical axis and are spaced from one another by a portion of the clip body 12.
In other embodiments, the locking portion 24 may take any suitable form which permits securing of the clip 10 to a deck board so as to prevent lateral movement of the clip 10 away from the deck board (which is described in more detail below).
The first body portion 14 includes a first abutment surface 30 which extends from the end point B of the fastener surface 21 towards the second body portion 16 such that the first abutment surface 30 extends underneath the fastener surface 21.
The second body portion 16 includes a second abutment surface 32 which extends from the locking portion 24, more specifically the second barb member 28b in this embodiment, towards the first body portion 14. In this embodiment, the second abutment surface 32 is angled so that it runs parallel with the slope 23 of the fastener surface 21. In other embodiments, it may have another angle.
Indeed, the first abutment surface 30 is also angled. The first and second abutment surfaces 30, 32 are angled toward one another so that they form essentially a V-shape.
The clip body 12 further includes a leg member 34 which extends from both of the first and second body portions 14, 16 downwards so as to contact a support surface (e.g. a decking frame) when in situ. The leg member 34 in this embodiment connects the first and second abutment surfaces 30, 32 such that the angled first and second abutment surfaces 30, 32 together with the leg member 34 form a Y-shape.
The leg member 34 includes first and second leg member portions 36a, 36b (as shown in Figure 1) which are spaced from one another to form a gap 38 therebetween. The gap 38 is positioned directly under the fastener hole 20. The leg member 34 may instead be a unitary member.
The clip body 12 extends between the first and second body portions 14, 16 so create a spacer 38 to space adjacent deck boards that are installed using the clip 10. In this embodiment, it is the width W extending between the bottom of the first and second abutment surfaces 30, 32 which defines the space between adjacent deck boards. This is seen in and described in more detail with reference to Figure 6. The clip body 12 acts to create a spacer 38 of 5 mm between adjacent deck boards. This distance may differ in other embodiments.
In this embodiment, the clip 10 is a unitary component, i.e. it is made from a single piece of material. In other embodiments, the clip 10 may be made from separate components that are joined together.
The clip 10 is made from, PA6 GF30% (30% glass filled nylon) but may be made from any suitable material, such as Nylon ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) or other suitable polymer.
Turning now to Figures 3a to 3c, the clip 10 is shown in use with a deck board 50. More specifically, Figures 3a to 3c show the steps taken to secure the clip 10 to the deck board 50.
Starting with Figure 3a, the clip 10 is first presented to the deck board 50 in a lateral manner, i.e. sideways, in an intermediate position. In the embodiment shown, the orientation of the clip 10 in the intermediate position is turned approximately 90° so that the locking portion 24 faces the deck board 50. In other embodiments, the clip 10 may be orientated by an angle other than 90°.
Moving onto Figure 3b, the locking portion 24 is inserted into the deck board 50 by moving the clip 10 laterally inwards (i.e. towards the deck board 50) such that the first barb member 28a engages with a corresponding portion of the deck board 50, while the clip 10 is still orientated in the intermediate position.
Then, as shown in Figure 3c, the clip 10 is forceably moved from the intermediate position to a secured position so that the second barb member 28b engages with another portion of the deck board 50. More specifically, the clip 10 is pushed downwards at the first body portion 14 and the first barb member 26a (which is engaged with a portion of the deck board 50) essentially forms a pivot point P. The clip 10 is pushed with enough force for the second barb member 26b to be pushed past the corresponding portion of the deck board 50, and thus the second barb member 28b engages with the deck board 50. The clip 10 is now in the secured position (i.e. in an upright orientation wherein the leg member 34 is supported on a surface of a decking frame) and the first and second barb members 28a, 28b are caught within the corresponding portion of the deck board 50 to prevent lateral movement of the clip 10 away from the deck board 50.
Moreover, as can be seen in Figure 3c, the fastener surface 21 is exposed beyond the edge of the deck board 50 when the clip 10 is secured to the deck board 50. Thus, the fastener surface 21 is accessible to an installer when the clip 10 is secured to the deck board 50.
A deck board 50 according to a second embodiment of the invention is shown in Figures 4 and 5.
The deck board 50 includes first and second decking surfaces 52, 54. The decking surfaces 52, 54 extend in parallel with one another and are spaced from one another by first and second installation profiles 56a, 56b. The first and second installation profiles 56a, 56b, extend between the first and second decking surfaces 52, 54 at either end of the surfaces 52, 54.
In this embodiment, the first and second installation profiles 56a, 56b are identical, and so only the first profile 56a is described below and is referred to "the installation profile 56a" for clarity.
The installation profile 56a extends along the length L of the deck board 50 and is uniform along its length. The installation profile 56a includes a locking portion 58. The locking portion 58 includes an open portion 60 which extends along the length L of the deck board 50 to form a channel 62.
The locking portion 58 also includes first and second locking members 64a, 64b in the form of barb members. The first and second barb members 64a, 64b are located in the open portion 60 so that they extend across the entrance of the open portion 60. The first and second barb members 64a, 64b extend essentially toward one another leaving a gap 66 for entry into the open portion 60.
The installation profile 56a has a first profile leg portion 68a that extends inwards (i.e. inboard to the deck board 50) at an angle and which includes the first barb member 64a, and a second profile leg portion 68b that extends from the first profile leg portion 68a at an angle back out towards the edge of the deck board 50. The first and second profile leg portions 68a, 68b therefore form a triangular-shaped cut out in the side of the deck board 50.
In this embodiment, the installation profile 56a is symmetrical about a central axis A that extends along the width of the deck board 50. In other embodiments it may instead be asymmetrical.
The deck board 50 also includes three support members 70 which extend vertically between the decking surfaces 52, 54. The support members 70 are thin columns which extend along the length of the deck board 50. There may be more or fewer number of support members 70.
The space between the first and second decking surfaces 52, 54 is essentially hollow (apart from the support members 70). The deck board 50 may instead be solid.
As shown in Figure 5, the first decking surface 52 has a different decorative appearance to the second decking surface 54. In this embodiment, the first decking surface 52 includes ridges 72 extending along the length of surface. This gives the first decking surface 52 a ridged appearance and may also provide grip for walking over the surface. Meanwhile, the second decking surface 54 is flat with no ridges, thus giving a smooth appearance. -The surfaces may have another appearance such as dimpled. Moreover, the second decking surface 54 (i.e. with no ridges) may be embossed with a wood grain to give an anti-slip surface and to create an aesthetically pleasing appearance.
The deck board 50 may be made from polymer or a wood-polymer mix. The deck board 50 may instead be made from metal.
A decking assembly according to a third embodiment of the invention is shown in Figures 6 and 7 and is designated generally by reference numeral 100.
The decking assembly 100 includes a plurality of clips 10 as described above in relation to the first embodiment of the invention, and a plurality of deck boards 50 as described above in relation to the second embodiment of the invention.
The deck boards 50 are arranged adjacent to one another so that the decking surfaces On this example, the first decking surface 52 of each deck board 50) combine to define a decking platform 102. Moreover, adjacent deck boards 50 have a clip 10 located therebetween. As shown in Figure 7, adjacent deck boards 50 have more than one clip 10 located therebetween, wherein the clips 10 are spaced along the length of the deck boards 50.
Figure 7 shows the decking assembly 100 in situ on a decking frame 104. The decking frame 104 includes joists 106 which support the deck boards 50. The decking frame 104 also incudes a cuff 108 which is secured around the edges of the decking platform 102 that is formed by the deck boards 50. In this example, a spare deck board 50 is also positioned over the outward facing joists 106 with one of the decking surfaces 52 (in this case, the ridged surface) facing outwards.
To install the decking assembly 100, an installer positions a first deck board 50 over the joists 106 of the decking frame. The installer can position the deck board 50 either way around depending on which of the first or second decking surfaces 52, 54 is desired to form the decking platform 102. In the embodiment shown, the first (ridged) surface 52 is outward facing.
The clip 10 is then secured onto the locking portion 58 of the deck board 50, as shown more clearly in Figures 3a, 3b and 3c. In particular, the clip 10 is turned around 90° counter clockwise from its upright position so that the locking portion 24 of the clip 10 is pointing towards the locking portion 58 of the deck board 50, i.e. the clip 10 is in the intermediate position.
The locking portion 24 of the clip 10 is inserted into the open portion 60 of the deck board 50 so that the first and second barb members 28a, 28b of the clip 10 are through the gap 66 formed by the first and second barb members 64a, 64b of the deck board 50. The clip is positioned in the upper portion of the open portion 60 in the deck board 50 so that the mutually engageable first barb members 28a, 64a of the clip 10 and deck board 50 are located with one another, as shown in Figure 3b.
The installer then pushes down on the first body portion 14 of the clip 10 so as to pivot the clip 10 around the first barb member 28a so as to bring the second abutment surface 32 into contact with the deck board 50. The clip 10 is therefore moved from the intermediate position to the secured position. By exerting this downwards force onto the clip 10, the second barb member 28b of the clip 10 is pushed past the second barb member 64b of the deck board 50. The installer will hear and feel a "click" when he/she does this.
The first and second mutually engageable barb members 28a, 28b, 64a, 64b are now engaged with one another (as shown in Figure 3c) such that thee clip 10 cannot be pulled laterally away from the deck board 50 without considerable force and/or orienting the clip 10 out of the secured position.
The installer can slide the clip 10 along the length of the deck board 50 and may wish to do this so as to position the clip 10 in line with a joist 106. As shown in Figure 7, another clip 10 is secured to the deck board 50 in the same manner as described above and is positioned in line with another joist 106. Further clips 10 may be secured as required.
Next, the installer inserts a screw (not shown) through the fastener hole 22b to secure the clip 10 onto the joist 106. The installer repeats this for each clip 10.
Another deck board 50 is positioned adjacent to the secured deck board 50 so that the first abutment surface 30 of the clip 10 abuts the second profile leg portion 68b in the first installation profile 56a of the second deck board 50. The angle of the abutment surface 30 of the clip 10 and the angle of the second profile leg portion 68b (i.e. the cut out in the installation profile 56a) match one another so that they align.
The installer then secures clips 10 onto the locking portion 58 of the second installation profile 56b (i.e. the exposed profile at the other end of the deck board 50) in the same manner as outlined above. These clips 10 are also secured to the decking frame 104 in the same manner as outlined above. These steps are repeated until the desired decking platform 102 is achieved.
