Abstract

A candle and plant container comprises an inner well 1, housed in an outer container 3, so that a plant pot 4 will take the place of the candle wax 2 in the inner well 1. The diameter of top of the inner well 1 should be such at the top rim of plant pot 4 can rest on top or finger wells to allow for the easy removal of plant pot 4 from the inner well 1. The depth of the inner well 1 should extend beyond the height of plant pot 4, creating a water overflow gap 5. Base 6 will have an inner lip, or tabs (12, fig 6), that will hold plant pot 4 securely in place and sides high enough to prevent water from flowing out. Plant pot 4 should come prefilled with dehydrated compost 8 and plant seeds 7. Outer container 3 can vary widely in colour, shape, size, material and texture to create a range of decorative vases, and may be designed so that plant pot 4 is stored within outer container 3 prior to use. Variations on the design will include an urn container 11 and a smaller version designed for herbs (not shown).

Description

A Candle and Plant Container
Background
This invention relates to a single container with multiple uses, primarily in displaying a candle and potted plants, particularly for use in the home.
When someone purchases, or receives as a gift, a container candle, the candle is normally burned, and the container is then discarded.
Sometimes, in the event of a gift, the candle is never burned so that the recipient can keep the gift forever as a keepsake. The candle then sits on a shelf and collects dust.
There are three variations of this core design.
1. A candle container that becomes a house plant container.
2. An Urn that incorporates a candle, and then a house plant, container.
3. A small herb garden for the kitchen that begins as small scented candles, and is changed to small pots for herbs.
Advantages The advantage this invention brings is to extend the life of a candle's container from a single-use vessel that is discarded after use, to a multi-use vessel with an indefinite lifespan.
This invention will add value to candles sold in this configuration as the owner, or receiver of the gift, will be able to keep and use the container indefinitely.
The inner container holding the candle wax should be designed such to accept standard, off-the-shelf plastic plant pots that can be purchased from any garden shop, and not be limited to the plant pot that came with the original purchase.
This invention allows for many different decorative designs of the outer container, providing consumers with a range of options to choose from.
Introduction to drawings
An example of the invention will be described in detail by referring to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1: Shows a cross-section of the invention as it might appear when purchased.
Figure 2: Shows the potted plant outside of the container with some of the candle consumed, as seen in a cross-section of the container.
Figure 3: Shows the candle completely consumed and the potted plant taking its place in the now empty candle portion of the container, in a cross-section view.
Figure 4: Shows a 3D view of the container with candle wax, as it might appear when purchased in isometric view. The plant pot is not visible.
Figure 5: Shows the plant pot, with plant, in the place of the candle wax in an isometric view.
Figure 6: Close up of the base for the plant pot.
Figure 7: Shows how the concept would be applied as an Urn, in cross-section view.
Detailed Description
This invention proposes a candle container designed such that it can double as a plant pot container once the candle wax has been consumed.
This invention proposes that a plant pot, with compost and seeds, be included with the purchase of the candle for this purpose, and that the container houses both the candle and the plant pot.
In the first embodiment, the colour and scent of the candle would match, or compliment, the colour and scent of the house plant.
Referring initially to Figure 1, this discloses a display device in which candle wax 2 is housed in an inner well 1 within an outer container 3.
The inner well 1 is designed such that a plant pot 4 can take the place of the candle wax 2 once the candle has been consumed or the candle wax otherwise removed.
The depth of the well 1 should extend beyond the height of the plant pot 4, which it is intended to use. This creates a water overflow gap 5 (see Figures 3).
Contained within the plant pot 4 will be a packet of seeds 7 (or seed embedded paper) and dehydrated compost 8.
The diameter of the top of the inner well 1 should be such that the top rim 10 of the plant pot 4 can rest thereon (see Figure 3). Alternatively, there can be other means, such as finger wells, to allow for the easy removal of the plant pot 4 from the inner well 1.
The outer container 3 shall be designed so that plant pot 4 is stored within the outer container 3 prior to use and at the time of purchase, as shown in Figure 1.
Housed in plant pot 4 (or between plant pot 4 and the outer container walls 3) will be stored dehydrated compost 8 and plant seeds 7 in separate packets as shown in Figure 1.
The plant pot 4 will stand in a separable base 6, which not only forms a base for the outer container 3 but also as a water reservoir for the plant pot 4 while the candle is being burned. The base 6 is be returned to the bottom of the outer container 3 once the plant pot 4 is placed in the well 1. Base 6 also includes a number of clips 12 that will be secure the plant pot 4 in place, so it doesn't not easily fall over.
In a first embodiment, the plant pot, compost and seeds are stored within the container at the time of purchase and removed for growing while the wax his been burned. However, the plant pot, compost and seeds could be stored outside of the container, or even sold separately.
Figure 7 highlights one possible arrangement for an Urn version of this design. Outer container 3 is larger to accommodate the urn container 11, which sits inside outer container 3 and will wither be screwed into place or held into place by a larger version of base 6, attached at the bottom.

Claims (3)

  1. Claims 1. A display device, said device including a container portion, said container portion defining at its upper end, a well, so sized to receive a plant pot, the container portion further defining an enclosed internal volume, below the well, to retain a plant pot, the container further including a removable attached base allowing a plant pot to be inserted and/or removed from the internal volume.
  2. 2. A display device according to claim 1, that would also include a urn container to store ashes.
  3. 3. A display device according to claim 1, that would be designed for kitchen herbs instead of a larger house plant.
