Abstract

257.819. Dumas, G. M. J. Feb. 3, 1926. Reverberatory furnaces; charging. - A continuously working furnace for aluminous cement &c. comprises a melting chamber 1 heated by flame jets under pressure from pulverulent - fuel burners 9, and a vertical feeding channel 4 through which only part of the burnt gases is adapted to pass. the chamber 1 being provided with one or more openings 10, 14 for the exhaust of part of the burnt gases in normal working, which openings are large enough or adapted to be enlarged sufficiently to allow the whole of the gases to pass through them in case the feeding channel 4 becomes blocked up by the material sticking together. The normal rate of combustion may therefore be maintained, and the apertures 14 are arranged so that the flame acts on the stuck lump in the feeding channel and melts it. whereupon these apertures may be closed by clay stoppers. The aperture 10 also serves as a tap-hole, the flame issuing from it in normal working keeping the outflowing cement &c. molten Water-cooling jackets 12, 13 are arranged on the front wall of the channel 4 and around the taphole 10. Above the channel 4 is a chimney 7 with a hood 6 having a charging door on a level with a charging platform 5. Secondary air under pressure may be applied to the furnace between the burners 9 and taphole 10.
