Abstract
A conical shaped cooling chamber 2 is designed to receive a conical packing container 1 for the on demand preparation of frozen/cold confection. The conical shaped packaging container 1 contains the ingredients necessary for producing a frozen/cold confection. The packaging container 1 may have a sealable opening at the top (5, figure 5(b)) to allow for the insertion of a plunger 4 and scaping unit, and a sealable opening at the bottom (6, figure 5(b)) to allow the frozen/cold confection to be dispensed directly from within the container 1. A plunger unit 4 may be inserted into, connected with, and retracted out of a conical packaging container 1 once the frozen/cold beverage has been dispensed.
Description
A conical shaped cooling chamber, a conical container packaging, and a plunger unit for preparing freshly-made frozen and/or cold confections on-demand
The present invention relates to a conical shaped cooling chamber, a conical shaped container packaging designed to fit into the cooling chamber, and a specially designed plunger system designed to dispense the contents from a conical container packaging.
This invention relates to the objective of preparing portioned frozen confections utilizing reusable, recyclable and/or disposable packaging units. The invention makes it possible prepare freshly made portions of frozen/cold confections on-demand in a much shorter period of time compared to domestically available ice cream makers.
Frozen and cold confections include, but are not exclusive to, dairy and non-dairy ice creams, gelato, sorbets, sherbets, mousses, frozen yogurts, and slush beverages.
Currently available domestic ice cream makers produce quantities of ice cream ranging from 0,5 litre to 2 litres in scraped bowls and must be removed manually. Patent application WO/2010/149509/A1 relates to a portioned frozen confection system, not only utilizes cylindrical container packaging but also the container incorporates all the internal scraper and plunger unit inside the packaging.
The present invention improves upon the prior art by providing a means to prepare freshly made frozen/cold convection with conically shaped container packaging designed to fit inside a conical cooling chamber and utilising a specially designed external plunger and scraper unit that is inserted into the container packaging and then removed from the container packaging once the frozen/cold confection has been dispensed. The present invention specifically improves upon application WO/2010/149509/A1 by:
a) employing a conical-to-conical fit design that ensures a tight contact for heat exchange versus a cylindrical-tocylindrical fit and eliminates the need to loosen and tighten the cooling chamber on insertion of the container packaging
b) employing plunger and scraper unit mechanism and design that is external to the container packaging, hence eliminating the need to have the scraper and plunger unit inside the packaging itself
In the present invention a conical shaped container packaging is designed to fit inside a purposely designed conical cooling chamber to cool the contents within the packaging unit.
The conical container packaging will hold the necessary contents and ingredients necessary to prepare the required frozen/cold convention on demand.
The conical container packaging will have a sealable opening at the top to allow insertion of the plunger and scraper unit.
The conical shaped plunger unit is designed to move through the conical container packaging by varying its dimensions as it moves through the angled conical container. The plunger is able to dispense from a conically angled container wall because it has a collapsing seal that accommodates the diameter both at the top and base of the conical chamber.
The conical plunger has a flexible conical seal that has the ability, through pliability of the material of construction, to accommodate a variety of diameters through the process of moving through the angled container. It delivers a sealing force at the top of the chamber sufficient to prevent a viscous substance passing between the seal edge and the angled container surface. As the plunger moves through the chamber the force between the seal edge and the surface wall becomes greater resulting in an interference fit between the plunger and the conical packaging thus allowing the packaging to be removed as the plunger and paddle assemblies are removed.
The plunger unit comprises of a connection mechanism that allows it to connect to an external drive unit to move the plunger through the packaging as and when dispensing is required.
The features and embodiments of the present invention are explained and shown in the figures and drawings enclosed.

The present invention relates to the fast and on-demand preparation of freshly made and portioned frozen/cold edible confections (dairy and non-dairy ice creams, gelato, sorbets, sherbets, mousses, frozen yogurts, and slush beverages) utilizing reusable, recyclable and/or disposable packaging units. The invention relates to three key components, A) a conical cooling chamber, B) a conical container packaging, and C) a plunger unit that allows for the efficient dispensing of contents from inside a conical space .
Figure 1 shows how a conical container packaging is inserted into the conical cooling chamber. The packaging seal at the top of the container packaging is manually removed to allow access for the external plunger and scraper unit. The external plunger and scraper unit is inserted into the container packaging. A rotational mechanical drive is applied to the scraping unit as the chamber cools the contents of the container packaging. The scraping unit scrapes, mixes and aerates the ingredients within the container during cooling. When the confection is ready, the bottom seal is removed and the plunger unit is engaged with an axial mechanical drive unit. A mechanical drive applies axial force to the plunger unit and into the conical container packaging to dispense out the frozen/cold confection, ready for consumption. The empty and used container packaging is removed and discarded.
To be ready to receive the next container packaging, the cooling chamber can undergo a defrosting stage to eliminate any ice crystal build-up on the surface of the internal walls of the conical cooling chamber.
A) The Conical Cooling Chamber
A conically shaped cooling chamber (Fig.3), is designed with dimensions to hold a conically shaped container packaging. The cooling chamber is effectively a refrigeration unit using either conventional vapour compression or thermoelectric 'peltier' technology. Fig. 7 shows the design of the conical cooling chamber connected to a refrigeration technology.
During the defrosting stage, a reversed compressor gas flow valve can be used in the case of vapour compression refrigeration or reversing the electrical current (DC, direct current) polarity in the case of thermoelectric 'peltier'. This allows for the internal surface of the conical cooling chamber to increase in temperature (heating instead of cooling) very quickly to the point at which any ice crystals will melt and liquefy and/or evaporate.
B) The Conical Container Packaging
Figure 4 shows the conical container packaging. The conical container packaging is designed with dimensions to fit snugly into the conical cooling chamber (Fig. 2). The container packaging is pre-dosed containing all the ingredients necessary to make a frozen/cold confection. The ingredients are preferably chilled or shelf-stable and include a gaseous phase e.g. air, in the container packaging headspace. The volume ratio of liquid & solid ingredients versus gas can vary between 30% and 90% depending on the type and texture of frozen convention required.
The container packaging has two removable peel-off seals, one at the top and one at the bottom (Figure 5). The top seal is removed so that the scraper and plunger unit can be inserted into the packaging. The bottom seal is removed to reveal a dispensing hole/orifice of desired shape from which the frozen/cold confection can be dispensed when ready.
C) The Plunger Unit
Figure 6 shows the plunger unit designed to be able to dispense from the conical container packaging. The plunger initially and throughout the frozen/cold confection cooling stage, sits at the top of the conical container packaging. When the frozen/cold confection is ready, the plunger is forced into the conical packaging to dispense the frozen/cold confection. The conical plunger has a flexible conical seal that has the ability, through pliability of the material of construction, to accommodate a variety of diameters through the process of moving through the angled container .
