Abstract

A system comprising a music source, a hardware chipset capable of converting the music to a low bit rate data stream and a transmitter which transmits the data stream to a server programed with a music recognition algorithm. The proprietary hard ware device is connected by wire to an analogue music source such as an in-car radio or a record player. This digitally fingerprints the music source. The tracks may be uploaded to a server and added to an online library. The system may be initiated by dropping the tone arm or touching the screen or indicator stalk in car.

Description

Methods for using a proprietary hardware device to digitally fingerprint any analogue music source, specifically in-car radio and record player pre-amplifier output, and match the fingerprint to an online library for media streaming.
Background
Other existing content recognition services require the user to have software installed on a client device such as a mobile phone and do not include proprietary hardware. They utilise existing installed base and require operation via an app on the device. They are also limited by not enabling hard wired source inputs to a proprietary hardware device such as a record player or incar radio or free standing puck.
Often users complain existing systems take time to initiate via their mobile phone, and in particular would be illegal to initiate while driving an automobile.
Our system solves these problems by creating a direct wired connection from the source to a binary programmed hardware chipset. The chipset enables a low bit rate digital stream of the music played by the source to be broadcast, for example over the internet, to additional proprietary server based software for recognition using existing recognition services.
The broadcast can take place, for example, via wifi or 3G/4G mobile data services.
The source can be, for example, a record player’s internal or external phono pre-amplification stage, in-car radio amplifier or free standing puck.
Our system can be initiated by the action of dropping the tonearm on the record or by either touching the screen or indicator stalk on in-car radio.
Therefore, we provide a system comprising a music source, a hardware chipset capable of converting the music to a low bit rate data stream, and a transmitter which transmits the data stream to a server programmed with a music recognition algorithm.
For example, the system can be provided a part of a record player which includes a phono preamplification stage.
For example, the system can be provided as part of an in-car audio installation.
Further details of our system will be apparent from the following description.
1. A system for identifying music played on a user’s sound reproduction device, comprising:
a) a wired connection between the sound reproduction device and an audio compression element;
b) a transmission element for transmitting compressed audio data from the audio compression element to a web-based server; and
c) a web-based server capable of identifying the music played on the user’s sound reproduction device and transmitting data identifying the music to the user.
2. A system according to claim 1, which is integrated into an onboard or outboard turntable phono preamplifier.
3. A system according to claim 1, which is integrated into a car audio system.
4. A system according to any preceding claim, which comprises a unique device identifier which identifies the transmission element to the web-based server.
5. A system according to any preceding claim, wherein the identity of the music played on the sound reproduction system can be added to a playlist in an online music service.

Claims (5)

1. A system for identifying music in real time played on a user’s sound reproduction device, here specifically defined as a vinyl turntable combined with a phono pre-amplifier, comprising:
a) a wired connection between the onboard phono pre-amplification device and an analogue to digital converter with compression element
b) a transmission element for transmitting the converted vinyl analogue output signal as compressed audio data from the audio compression element to a web-based server; and
c) a web-based server capable of identifying the music output from the user’s vinyl turntable phono pre-amplifier, and transmitting data identifying the music to the user.
2. A system according to claim 1, which is integrated into an onboard or outboard turntable phono preamplifier.
3. A system according to claim 1, which is integrated into a car audio system.
4. A system according to any preceding claim, which comprises a unique turntable device identifier which identifies the transmission element to the web-based server.
5. A system according to any preceding claim, wherein the identity of the music played in real time on the vinyl turntable can be added to a playlist in an online music service.
