Abstract
256,996. Royston, E. R., (Millersburg Reamer & Tool Co.). March 18, 1925. Reamers.-An expanding reamer having helical flutes is formed by cutting the flutes and intermediate slots parallel with the axis and then twisting while heated. The body 2 is first provided with a parallel bore 7 extending from the end 10, the flutes 1 are milled and slots 8 are then cut by a saw to penetrate the bore 7. Refore heating and twisting strips 9 are placed in the slots to prevent them from closing, and after twisting the bore is enlarged at 3 and screwthreaded to receive an expanding plug having a conical end for engaging a conical seat 6. Not less than three slots must be provided, but more than one flute may lie in a segment between two slots. In a modification the body is fluted and slotted before it is bored, the filling-strips 9 then being unnecessary during twisting.
