Abstract

256,564. McConway & Torley Co., (Assignees of McConway, W.). Aug. 7, 1925, [Convention date]. Couplings, automatic.-In a coupling of the pivoted knuckle type such as is described in Specification 185,657, the lock 4 and lock lifter 6 are connected by a pin 8 and slot 7, Fig. 1, so as to be capable of relative sliding movements and the lock has a lug 24, preferably seated on one side of the lock and rearwardly of the tail 5 of the knuckle, adapted to seat in a recess 25 in the tail of the knuckle and thereby support the lock in unlocked position while the knuckle is closed. The lifter 6 has a shoulder 16 adapted to co-operate with a portion 17 of the coupler head to prevent creeping of the look. The slot 7 in the lock lifter is inclined so that in raising the lock by the lock lifter the latter is moved inwardly and upwardly of the lock and the projection 16 is withdrawn from under the portion 17 of the coupler head to permit the lock to be raised by the pin 8. When the lock is clear of the knuckle tail 5 it swings over so that a projection 24 engages a tapering recess 25, Fig. 2, on the knuckle tail, this being the lock set position of the coupling and in which the knuckle is free to open. In opening, the recess 25 guides the projection 24 off the knuckle tail so that the base of the lock drops on to the knuckle tail and the lock is brought into vertical alignment ready for the next coupling operation. The end 19 of the lock lifter projects from the lock and is adapted to strike the short arm 21 of the knuckle thrower 15 when the lock is raised into its extreme vertical position. The pin 8 has a bent end which is turned round after insertion in the lock so that displacement is prevented by a portion of the lock.
