Abstract

Apparatus (1) for monitoring conditions in a defined volume (V) in a borehole, the defined volume (V) containing one or more borehole fluids, the apparatus (1) comprising a reservoir (6) for storing a boundary fluid (B), the apparatus further comprising at least one energy source (41, 42) and means for communication (131-133, 141, 142), wherein the apparatus (1) is adapted to release the boundary fluid (B) into the defined volume (V) and the apparatus (1) comprises one or more means of detecting fluid characteristics (50-59), wherein the means of detecting fluid characteristics (50- 9) are arranged to monitor said fluid characteristics in a portion of the defined volume (V). Method for monitoring conditions in a defined volume (V) in a borehole by means of an apparatus (1) according to claim 1, wherein the method comprises the release of a boundary fluid (B) into the defined volume (V) and the subsequent detection of fluid characteristics in a portion of the defined volume (V).
