Description

Door closer
The present invention relates to a door closer with a housing, a closing arm pivotably mounted in the housing and loaded by a closing spring unit for the transmission of forces between a door leaf and a stationary frame, a damping device for damping the closing movement of the door leaf and means for securing the door closer to the door leaf. The door leaf may, in particular, be a rotary leaf. If mention is made in the following of a stationary frame, this must be understood to also include a stationary wall or the like.
Door closers are generally known and effect the autonomous closing of a door, wherein both the movement of the door panel into the doorjamb and the dropping of the lock latch of the door lock into the lock plate is guaranteed.
The cost of assembling conventional door closers is relatively high. A further disadvantage is the damage to the door panel and the jamb that frequently remains behind, for example, due to assembly holes. In private households in particular, door closers are therefore rarely used, especially as the high actuating force generally required for opening the door also disrupts the everyday course of events and the frequently relatively large size and the frequently unattractive design of the closers are perceived as disturbing in living areas.
The aim of the invention is to propose a door closer of the type already mentioned in which the previously mentioned disadvantages have been eliminated. Here, in particular, the assembly cost will be minimised, damage-free assembly will be guaranteed and the door closer will be kept relatively compact and discreet in its construction, so that its use may also be considered in private households, in particular.
The aim is achieved according to the invention by a corresponding door closer with the features of Claim 1 and/or the features of Claim 19. Preferred embodiments of the door closers according to the invention result from the dependent claims, the present description and the drawing.
According to a first aspect of the invention, the door closer comprises a housing, a closing arm pivotably supported on the housing and loaded by a closing spring unit for transmitting forces between a door leaf and a stationary frame, a damping device for damping the closing movement of the door leaf and means for securing the door closer to the door leaf. In this case the securing means comprise an attachable compartment provided on the housing by means of which the door closer can be attached to a rebate of the door leaf. The closing arm is arranged and loaded by the closing spring unit in such a manner that when the door closer is assembled it can be pressed resiliently against the stationary frame. The damping device comprises a damping arm that is pivotably supported in the housing and is loaded by at least one damping element with restoring action, which arm, when the door leaf is assembled, and for the purpose of damping the closing movement of the door leaf, at least over a predeterminable opening angle of the door leaf, can be mounted on the stationary frame.
This design ensures that not only is the assembly cost minimised but damage-free assembly is guaranteed. Moreover, the door closer may be kept relatively compact and discreet in its construction, so that its use in private households in particular may also be considered.
For example, the door closer need no longer be screwed to the door leaf. With the attachable compartment provided on the housing the door closer can now be attached easily to a rebate of the door leaf. Although in this case additional fixing by means of screws or the like is possible, it is not absolutely required. The closing arm need no longer be fixedly connected to the frame either. According to the in- vention, this arm is still only pressed against the stationary frame and is kept resiliency in contact with it. The damping arm , when the door leaf is assembled, and for the purpose of damping the closing movement of the door leaf, is mounted only on the stationary frame so that no damage occurs due to assembly in this respect either.
The attachable compartment of the housing suitably has, at least in sections, a U-shaped cross-section.
In order to guarantee, in particular, a secure retention of the door closer on the door leaf, it is advantageous for the door closer to be attachable by means of the attachable compartment of the housing in a clamping position to the rebate of the door leaf.
According to a suitable practical embodiment of the door closer according to the invention, the damping element, with restoring action of the damping device is accommodated in a section of the housing which is horizontal when the door closer is assembled, and the damping arm of the damping device is pivotably supported in this horizontal housing section.
The attachable compartment of the housing may advantageously extend over a right angle, wherein the door closer may be attached by means of this right-angled attachable compartment of the housing in an in particular upper corner region of the door leaf to a rebate of the door leaf.
The closing spring unit loading the closing arm may suitably comprise a torsion spring. Here such a torsion spring is preferably arranged in a section of the housing which is vertical when the door closer is assembled.
According to a preferred practical embodiment of the door closer according to the invention, the damping arm is provided with toothing which meshes with a toothing of a bracket receiving the damping element with restoring action.
Here the bracket receiving the damping element with restoring action is suitably displaceably mounted in the housing and is movable in translation in the housing with a respective rotation of the damping arm.
It is particularly advantageous if the damping element with restoring action is compressed when the door leaf is closed and when the damping arm is in contact with the stationary frame by means of the bracket coupled to the damping arm for damping the closing movement of the door leaf.
Thus if the damping arm, when the door leaf is closed, strikes the stationary frame, the rotary movement of the damping arm is converted via the tooothings into a stroke of the bracket receiving the damping element with restoring action. Here the at least one damping element with restoring action is compressed, thereby braking or damping the closing movement of the door leaf. The door leaf is braked earlier or later depending on the length of the damping arm.
According to a suitable practical embodiment of the door closer according to the invention, the damping element with restoring action is arranged between the bracket and a wall of the housing. The housing wall concerned may, for example, be provided in the region of the closing arm. In this case, the damping of the closing movement of the door leaf due to the compression of the damping element with restoring action can be achieved, for example, as a result of the damping arm pushing the bracket over the toothings in the direction of the closing arm.
According to an advantageous alternative embodiment of the door closer according to the invention, however, the damping element with restoring action may also be arranged between the bracket and a stop provided in or on the housing. In this case the damping of the closing movement of the door leaf due to the compression of the damping element with restoring action can be effected, for example, as a result of the damping arm pulling the bracket over the toothings in the direction of the closing arm. A respective damping element with restoring action may advantageously comprise a damping cylinder with a return spring.
In the rest position, i.e. when the door leaf is open, such a damping cylinder can, in particular, be extended.
According to a further suitable practical embodiment of the door closer according to the invention, the closing spring unit loading the closing arm comprises a compression spring.
This compression spring is preferably arranged between a seating loading the closing arm and guided displaceably on the housing, and a stop provided in the housing.
It is also of particular advantage for the compression spring and the seating assigned to same to be accommodated in the section of the housing which is horizontal when the door closer is assembled.
Also conceivable are, in particular, such embodiments of the door closer according to the invention, in which both the at least one damping element with restoring action is accommodated in a section of the housing which is horizontal when the door closer is assembled and the damping arm of the damping device is pivotably mounted in this horizontal housing section, and the compression spring and the seating assigned to it are accommodated in this horizontal section of the housing when the door closer is assembled. On the other hand, the closing arm is preferably pivotably mounted in a section of the housing which is vertical when the door closer is assembled. In principle, however, such embodiments of the door closer in which the housing only comprises a section which is horizontal when the door closer is assembled and correspondingly all the components of the door closer mentioned are arranged or pivotably mounted in this horizontal housing section, are also conceivable.
The maximum extension stroke of the damping element with restoring action is advantageously adjustable by means of adjusting means such as, in particular, a set screw or the like. Since this also means, correspondingly, that the set-up angle of the damping arm is also adjustable, the opening angle of the door leaf from which the damping arm comes into contact with the stationary frame, thereby initiating the damping, can also be adjusted.
According to a further suitable embodiment of the door closer according to the invention, the end of the damping arm facing toward the door leaf can be provided with a felt, a roll or the like. This enables damage to the stationary leaf, for example scratches or the like, to be easily avoided.
According to a further aspect of the invention, the door closer comprises a housing, a closing arm pivotably mounted on the housing and loaded by a closing spring unit for the transmission of forces between a door leaf and a stationary frame, a damping device for damping the closing movement of the door leaf and means for securing the door closer to the door leaf. In this case the securing means comprise an attachable compartment provided on the housing by means of which the door closer can be attached to a rebate. The closing arm is arranged and loaded by the closing spring unit in such a manner that when the door closer is assembled it can be pressed resiliently against the stationary frame. The damping device comprises a bracket that is displaceably guided in the housing, is ar- ranged between the closing spring unit and the closing arm and receives at least one damping element with restoring action.
The bracket receiving the damping element with restoring action is preferably provided with a toothing which meshes with a toothing of the closing arm.
According to a suitable practical embodiment of the door closer according to the second aspect of the invention, the damping element with restoring action, received in the bracket, is supported on the one hand in the bracket and on the other hand on the housing.
The closing arm of the door closer according to the second aspect of the invention therefore simultaneously serves as a damping arm. Moreover, this door closer according to the second aspect of the invention can at least substantially again be constructed in the same manner as the door closer according to the first aspect of the invention.
The invention is explained in more detail below on the basis of embodiments with reference to the drawing, in which the following are shown:

Fig. 12 shows a schematic representation of the door closer accord ing to Fig. 11 with the door leaf open.
Figs. 1 to 10 show different exemplary embodiments of a door closer 10 according to the first aspect of the invention.
Here the door closer 10 comprises respectively a housing 12, a closing arm 16 pivotably mounted in housing 12 and loaded by a closing spring unit 14 for transmitting forces between a door leaf 18 and a stationary frame 20, a damping device 22 for damping the closing movement of the door leaf 18 and means 24 for securing the door closer 10 to the door leaf 18.
The securing means 24 respectively comprise an attachable compartment 26 provided on housing 12 by means of which the door closer 10 can be attached to a rebate 28 of door leaf 18.
The closing arm 16 is arranged and is loaded by the closing spring unit 14 in such a manner that when door closer 10 is assembled it can be pressed resiliently against the stationary frame 20.
The damping device 22 comprises respectively a damping arm 32 that is pivotably mounted in the housing 12 and loaded by at least one damping element 30 with restoring action, which arm, when the door leaf 18 in the assembled state, can contact the stationary frame 20 in order to damp the closing movement of door leaf 18, at least over a predeterminable opening angle of the door leaf 18 In this case, the damping arm 32 is loaded, for example, by two respective damping elements 30 of the damping device 22.
As can be seen, in particular, from Figs. 2 and 3, the attachable compartment 26 of the housing 12 may have a U-shaped cross-section, at least in sections. In this way, the door closers 10 can be attached, by means of attachable compartment 26 of housing 12, in particular in the clamping positiont, on the rebate 28 of door leaf 18.
The damping elements 30 with restoring action of the damping device 22 may each be accommodated in a section 12’ of the housing 12 which is horizontal when the door closer 10 is assembled. Moreover, the damping arm 32 of the damping device 22 may be pivotably mounted in this horizontal housing section 12’ (cf. in particular Figs. 4 to 10).
As can be seen, in particular, in Figs. 2 to 8, the attachable compartment 26 of housing 12 may extend over a right angle so that the door closer 10 is attachable by means of this right-angled attachable compartment 26 of the housing 12 in an in particular upper corner region of the door leaf 18 to a rebate 28 of the door leaf 18.
In the case of the exemplary embodiments of the door closer 10 shown in Figs. 1 to 8, the closing spring unit 14 loading the closing arm 16 comprises a torsion spring 34. Here this torsion spring 34 can, in particular, be arranged in a section 12” of housing 12 which is vertical when the door closer 10 is assembled.
The damping arm 32 may be provided respectively with a toothing 36 which meshes with a toothing 38 of a bracket 40 receiving the damping elements 30 (cf. in particular Figs. 4 to 10). In this case the bracket 40 receiving damping elements 30 with restoring action is guided displaceably in the housing 12 and can move in translation with a respective rotation of the damping arm 32 in the housing 12.
The damping elements 30 with restoring action are compressed when the door leaf 18 is closed when damping arm 32 is attached to the stationary frame 20 by means of the bracket 40 coupled to the damping arm 32, in order to damp the closing movement of the door closer 18.
As can be seen, for example, from Figs. 4 to 7, the damping elements 30 with restoring action are arranged, for example, between bracket 40 and a wall 42 of the housing 12. In this case the bracket 40, with the damping elements 30 with restoring action, are arranged between the damping arm 32 and the closing arm 16. When the door leaf 18 is closed, the bracket 40 is therefore pushed by the damping arm 32 in the direction of the closing arm 16 in order to achieve the desired damping. The door leaf 18 is braked earlier or later depending on the length of the damping arm 32.
In the embodiment according to Fig. 8, however, the damping elements 30 with restoring action are arranged between the bracket 40 and a stop 44 provided in or on the housing 12. In this case the bracket 40 is pulled in the direction of the closing arm 16 when the door leaf 18 is closing in order to effect the required damping. Moreover, the damping function is the same as in the preceding exemplary em- bodiment. On the basis of this pulling function principle, the fulcrum of the damping arm 32 can be displaced closer to the door hinge enabling larger operational damping angles to be achieved by the same damping arm 32.
The damping elements 30 with restoring action may each comprise, for example, a damping cylinder with a restoring spring.
In the embodiment of the door closer 10 shown in Figs. 9 and 10, the closing spring unit 14 loading the closing arm 16 comprises a compression spring 46. In this case, this compression spring 46 is arranged, for example, between a seating 48 loading the closing arm 16 and guided displaceably in the housing 12, and a stop 50 provided in the housing 12. The compression spring 46 and the seating 48 assigned to same may, as shown, be accommodated in section 12’ of housing 12 which is horizontal when door closer 10 is assembled.
The maximum extension stroke of the damping elements 30 with restoring action may be adjustable by means of adjusting means 52, such as, in particular, a set screw or the like (cf. in particular Fig. 7), so that the opening angle of door leaf 18 from which damping arm 32 comes into contact with stationary frame 20 and the damping is initiated can be variably adjusted.
The end of the damping arm 32 facing away from the door leaf 18 can be provided with a felt, a roll or the like, to prevent damage to the stationary frame 20, for example as a result of scratches or the like.
Figs. 11 and 12 show an exemplary embodiment of a door closer 10 according to the second aspect of the invention.
In this case, this door closer 10 again comprises a housing 12, a closing arm 16 pivotably mounted on the housing 12 and loaded by a closing spring unit 14 for transmitting forces between a door leaf 18 and a stationary frame 20 (cf. also Figs. 1 to 10), a damping device 22 for damping the closing movement of door closer 18 and means 24 for securing the door closer 10 to door leaf 18 (cf. also, in this respect, Figs. 1 to 10 once again. In this case too, the securing means 24 again comprise an attachable compartment 26 provided on the housing 12, by means of which the door closer 10 is attachable to a rebate 28 of the door leaf 18. In this case too, the closing arm 16 is again arranged and loaded by the closing spring unit 14 in such a manner that when the door closer 10 is assembled it can be pressed resiliently against the stationary frame 20.
Unlike in the case of the preceding exemplary embodiments, the bracket guided displaceably in the housing 12 and the receiving damping elements 30 with restoring action is arranged between the closing spring unit 14 and the closing arm 16.
In this case, the closing arm 16 serves simultaneously as a damping arm.
The bracket 30 receiving the damping elements 30 with restoring action may, as shown, be provided with a toothing 38 which meshes with a toothing 54 of the closing arm 16.
The damping elements 30 with restoring action, received in the bracket 40, may be supported on the one hand in the bracket 40 and on the other hand on the housing 12 or a stop 56 assigned thereto.
The closing spring unit 14 may, as shown, comprise a compression spring, for example.
Moreover, according to the second aspect of the invention, this door closer 10 may, at least substantially, be of the same construction as the embodiments described above according to the first aspect of the invention.
As already mentioned, the term used above, “stationary frame”, must be understood to also include a stationary wall or the like.
Fig. 1 shows a door closer 10 attached to the rebate of a door leaf 18 according to the first aspect of the invention with a closing spring unit comprising a torsion spring. Fig. 2 shows the door closer 10 according to Fig. 1 again, in an enlarged representation.
Fig. 3 shows a further schematic perspective representation of the door closer 10 according to Fig. 1, from a different viewing angle. Here it can also be seen, in particular, how the closing arm 16 transmits the closing torque to the stationary frame 20 (or a stationary wall).
Fig. 4 shows the door closer 10 according to Fig. 1 in a phase in which the door leaf 18 is still open so far that the damping arm 32 is not yet engaged with the stationary frame 20 (wall). The torsion spring 34 accommodated in the vertical housing section 12” is tensioned and transmits the closing moment to the closing arm 16. The damping elements 30 with restoring action are in the extended rest position, so that the damping arm 32 is extended.
Fig. 5 shows the door closer according to Fig. 1 in a phase in which the door leaf 18 is already so far closed that the damping arm 32 is engaged with the stationary frame 20 (wall) and the closing movement of the door leaf is therefore damped.
Fig. 6 shows the door closer 10 according to Fig. 1 in a phase in which the door leaf 18 is fully closed.
Thus if the damping arm 32 strikes against the stationary frame 20 (wall) when the door is closed, the rotary movement of the damping arm 32 is converted by toothings 36, 38 to a stroke of the bracket 40. Here the damping elements 30 with restoring action are compressed and the door leaf 18 is braked. Depending on the length of the damping arm 32, the door leaf 18 is braked earlier or later. To avoid damage to the stationary frame 20 (wall) a felt, a roll or the like may be provided at the end of the damping arm 32. As stated above, damping device 22 operates in this case according to a kind of “pressing function principle”.
Fig. 7 shows a door closer 10 comparable to the door closer according to Fig. 1, wherein the door closer is also provided with an adjusting means 52 for adjusting the maximum extension stroke of the damping elements 30. The damping elements 30 with restoring action assume their extended rest position so that the damping arm 32 is extended. The extension stroke of the damping elements 30 can be limited by the adjusting means 52, so that the door angle at which the damping arm 32 comes into contact with the stationary frame 20 (wall) and the damping is initiated, is variably adjustable.
Fig. 8 shows a further exemplary embodiment of a door closer 10 attached to a door leaf 18 according to the first aspect of the invention, wherein the damping elements 30 are arranged between the assigned bracket 40 and a stop 44 provided in or on housing 12. The damping elements 30 with restoring action are in the extended rest position, so that the damping arm 32 is extended. In this case too, the stroke of the damping elements 30 can again be limited by adjusting means. This applies to all embodiments of the door closer according to the invention.
When the closing movement of the door leaf 18 is damped, the seating 40 is in this case pulled towards the closing arm 16. On the basis of this “pulling function principle”, the fulcrum of the damping arm 32 can be displaced closer to the door hinge, thus enabling greater operational damping angles to be achieved with the same damping arm 32. Moreover, the door closer 10 can again, at least substantially, have the same construction as the design variants previously described.
Fig. 9 shows an exemplary embodiment of a door closer 10 attached to a door leaf 18 according to the first aspect of the invention, with a closing spring unit 14 com prising a compression spring 46 when door leaf 18 is closed. Fig. 10 shows the door closer 10 according to Fig. 9, when door leaf 18 is open.
Fig. 11 shows a door closer 10 attached to a door leaf 18 according to the second aspect of the invention, with a damping device 22 the bracket 40 of which receiving the damping elements 30 is arranged between the closing spring unit 14 and the closing arm 16, wherein the door closer 10 is represented when the door leaf 18 is closed.
Fig. 12 shows the door closer 10 according to Fig. 11 when the leaf is open. As can be seen in Figs. 11 and 12, the closing spring unit 14 may in this case comprise a compression spring, for example.
Moreover, the door closer 10 represented in Figs. 11 and 12 may, at least substantially, be of the same construction as described in connection with the preceding exemplary embodiments according to the first aspect of the invention.
