FIG. 3
STREET FURNITURE [001] The present invention relates to street furniture, and in particular street furniture comprising display means for displaying information.
[002] “Street furniture” is a collective term used to refer to objects and equipment installed on streets, roads, pedestrian areas, such as parks, etc, for the benefit of its users, such as pedestrians and vehicle operators. Examples of street furniture include seats and benches, bus stops, road signs, street lights, post boxes, and refuse bins.
[003] Whilst an important consideration in the design of street furniture is road safety, street furniture also provides a useful means for displaying information, such as advertisements. For example, refuse bins provide an effective means to display information since they are closer to eye level than, for example, many advertising hoardings, and provide continuous marketing through daily exposure to the public. This method of advertising is seen by a high volume of potential customers and is not exclusive to a niche market.
[004] Examples of prior arrangements of street furniture advertisements are described in GB 2471743, GB 2463885 and US 3,793,756.
[005] GB 2471 743 discloses a solar panel permanently attached to a refuse bin. However, the materials used are costly and prone to high maintenance and running costs. The advertisement is waterproof due to an acrylic covering to the solar panels.
[006] GB 2463885 discloses an advertisement attached by a bayonet plug, packet trap, screw or other fixed element. Accordingly, the advertisement is not easily detachable from the street furniture.
[007] US 3,793,756 discloses a combination refuse bin and display device, in which a removable poster may be displayed inside, which is not attached directly to the refuse bin. The poster is viewed through a window panel which protects the poster from the environment.
[008] Existing street furniture advertising thus suffers from expensive set up and running costs. There is thus a need for a cost effective means of displaying information on street furniture.
[009] Thus, according to the present invention there is provided street furniture comprising display means for displaying information, the display means comprising an adhesive laminate comprising a polyvinylchloride (PVC) substrate for displaying information and a polyacrylate adhesive for adhering the substrate to the street furniture.
[0010] The street furniture is conveniently a refuse bin, which includes bins for refuse, recycling, dog waste and other bins. As discussed above, refuse bins have the advantage that they provide an effective means to display information since they are closer to eye level than, for example, many advertising hoardings, and provide continuous marketing through daily exposure to the public. However, the present invention includes street furniture other than refuse bins.
[0011] Refuse bins are available in a variety of different designs and materials. Thus, they may be floor mounted or post mounted. They may be open- or closed-topped, and may have a square, rectangular, circular or semicircular cross-section. A square or rectangularly cross-sectioned bin may thus have four substantially flat outwardly facing panels, whereas a semi-circularly cross-sectioned bin may have one flat outwardly facing panel and one semicircular outwardly facing panel, together with a curved or flat top surface. The dimensions of a typical street refuse bin may be approximately 1m in height, and 50cm square/diameter cross-section, providing a capacity in the region of 120 litres. However, larger and smaller dimensions and capacities are available. Refuse bins are typically made from metal, such as tin or steel, plastics, such as polyethylene, or other materials such as glass fibre composite. However, outdoor refuse bins must be convenient to use, and resistant to the prevailing environmental conditions in the location of use, in particular with regard to temperature and moisture.
[0012] The display means comprises an adhesive laminate comprising a PVC substrate for displaying information. PVC has the advantage that it water resistant, and temperature resistant for the vast majority of street applications, and may also be printed to display information, such as an advertisement. The PVC may have a gloss or matt surface, and may be coloured, opaque or transparent. The PVC substrate may have a thickness of, for example, from 50 to 200 microns, preferably from 75 to 150 microns. These preferred thicknesses provide a PVC substrate which is sufficiently robust for outdoor application, but which is also flexible for printing and application to street furniture surfaces which are curved.
[0013] The PVC substrate may preferably be printed with solvent based, UV or latex inks.
[0014] The display means also comprises a polyacrylate adhesive layer on the PVC substrate for adhering the substrate to the street furniture. Polyacrylate adhesive has the advantage of having sufficient adhesive power to adhere the substrate to the street furniture for a sufficient period of use, for example at least two weeks, preferably up to two months. Polyacrylate adhesive is also resistant to water. Polyacrylate adhesive also has the advantage of not damaging the street furniture upon removal of the substrate. The polyacrylate adhesive layer is preferably protected by a releasable protective liner prior to adhesion of the PVC substrate to the street furniture, such as a silicone coated paper protective liner.
[0015] A suitable material for forming the display means is commercially available under the trade name Orajet 3162, available from ORAFOL Europe GmbH, Oranienburg, Germany.
[001 6] The adhesive laminate display means preferably further comprises a protective coating layer on the opposite surface of the PVC substrate to the polyacrylate adhesive, i.e. the surface facing outwards, to provide protection against, for example, UV, graffiti/vandalism, and dirt, and also to make the substrate easier to clean. The protective coating layer is preferably transparent, so that information printed on the PVC substrate may be viewed. The protective coating layer may be formed from polyethylene teraphthalate (PET).
[001 7] The protective coating layer may have a thickness similar to that of the PVC substrate, or preferably slightly less. For example, the protective coating layer may have a thickness of from 10 to 100 microns, more preferably from 25 to 75 microns.
[0018] The protective coating layer may be applied to the PVC substrate using a polyacrylate adhesive, protected by a protective liner, such as a silicone coated paper or polyethylene film.
[0019] A suitable material for forming the protective coating layer is commercially available under the trade name Aslan SL 95, from ASLAN, Schwarz GmbH and Co, KG, Overath, Germany.
[0020] The adhesive laminate display means is cut to the appropriate size for the surface of the street furniture to which it is to be applied.
[0021] Thus, the display means used in the present invention may be prepared by applying the polyacrylate adhesive to the PVC substrate, protected by a protective liner. The adhesive coated substrate may then be printed with the information to be displayed, for example an advertisement, for example using a solvent based inkjet printer. Once the ink is thoroughly dry, a preferably transparent protective coating may then be applied to the PVC substrate, such as a PET coating, so that the printed information may be viewed therethrough. The display means may then be cut to the desired shape and size for application to the street furniture, for example a refuse bin. When applying the display means to the street furniture, the surface of the street furniture to which the display means is being applied should be thoroughly cleaned to remove dust, grease or other contamination which could affect adhesion. Lacquered or painted surfaces should be allowed to completely dry or cure before applying the display means.
[0022] The display means may be of any desired shape or size on the surface of the street furniture. Thus, for example, the display means may substantially cover one or more outwardly facing panels of a square cross-sectional refuse bin, or extend around the entire circumference of a circular cross-sectional refuse bin, or cover the entire top surface. Alternatively, the display means may form a strip which extends over a part of the face(s) or circumference. The street furniture may comprise one or a plurality of display means, and may comprise more than one display means per face.
[0023] The present invention also provides display means for attachment to street furniture for displaying information which comprises an adhesive laminate of a PVC substrate coated with a polyacrylate adhesive, and a protective coating applied to the opposite side of the PVC substrate to the polyacrylate adhesive which is sufficiently transparent so that information printed on the PVC substrate may be viewed.
[0024] The present invention will now be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1A shows a square cross-sectional refuse bin of the present invention;
Figure 1 B shows a circular cross-sectional refuse bin of the present invention;
Figure 2 shows back, left, front and right views of the square cross-sectional refuse bin shown in Figure 1; and
Figure 3 shows a blank of a display means for use in the present invention for cutting to size and applying to a square cross-sectional refuse bin.
[0025] Thus, Figure 1A shows a square cross-sectional steel refuse bin 10 of the present invention. The refuse bin 10 is a closed-top bin, with an opening 70 through which refuse is put into the bin. The refuse bin 10 comprises display means 20, displaying information in the form of a “diamond” device 30 on the front panel of the refuse bin 10, and display means 25, on the lower front portion of the refuse bin
10. Other display means may be provided on the top surface 40, side panels 50, 60, and rear panel (not shown in Figure 1 A) of the refuse bin 10. The dimensions of the refuse bin 100 are approximately 1030mm height, 480mm square external cross-section, and a capacity of approximately 120 litres. The embodiment of the present invention shown in Figure 1A is shown in more detail in Figure 2.
[0026] Figure 1 B shows a circular cross-sectional steel refuse bin 100 of the present invention. The refuse bin 100 is a closed-top bin, with an opening 1 70 through which refuse is put into the bin. The refuse bin 100 comprises display means 120, displaying information in the form of a “diamond” device 130, which extends around the circumference of the refuse bin 100. Other display means may be provided on the top surface 140 of the refuse bin 100.
[0027] In the embodiments shown in Figures 1A and 1 B, the display means may comprise a PVC substrate having a thickness of approximately 100 microns, coated with a polyacrylate adhesive which adheres the substrate to the refuse bins. A suitable material for forming the display means is commercially available under the trade name Orajet 3162, available from ORAFOL Europe GmbH, Oranienburg, Germany.
[0028] After the display information has been printed onto the substrate, for example by solvent based inject printing, a protective coating is applied to the substrate, in the form of a PET coating of approximately 50 microns thickness. The PET coating layer is adhered to the PVC substrate by a polyacrylate adhesive. The protective coating provides protection against, for example, UV, graffiti/vandalism, and dirt, and also makes the substrate easier to clean. A suitable material for forming the protective coating layer is commercially available under the trade name Aslan SL 95, from ASLAN, Schwarz GmbH and Co, KG, Overath, Germany.
[0029] Figure 2 shows back, left, front and right views of the square crosssectional refuse bin 100 shown in Figure 1A. Thus, Figure 2 shows the back, left, front and right surfaces of the refuse bin 100. The back surface has a main display means 80 and lower display means 85, and the left and right surfaces have corresponding display means 60, 65, 50, 55 respectively. In Figure 2 the front surface only comprises a lower display means 25. Display means may also be present on the top surface 40, not shown in Figure 2.
[0030] Figure 3 shows a blank 200 of a display means for use in the present invention for cutting to size and applying to a square cross-sectional refuse bin. The blank 200 comprises a single sheet of PVC substrate to which the polyacrylate adhesive has been applied, protected by a protective liner, such as silicone coated paper. The adhesive coated substrate is then printed with the information to be displayed, such as an advertisement, for example using a solvent based inkjet printer. Once the ink is thoroughly dry, a transparent protective coating may then be applied to the PVC substrate, such as a PET coating. All of these steps are performed whilst the display means is in the form of a single sheet of material. Once completed, the display means may then be cut into different sections of the desired shape and size for application to the refuse bin, and the blank 200 shows the sections marked out. Thus, the blank 200 comprises back 280, 285, left 260, 265, front 220, 225, right 250, 255 and top 240 panels for applying to the corresponding surfaces of a refuse bin.
