Temporary Restraining Device
This invention relates to a temporary restraining device, and particularly but not exclusively to a device for retaining straps in position during fixing for instance of securing straps on the load on a lorry or trailer, or similar.
Typically adjustable straps are provided extending from one side of a lorry or trailer across a load, and to the other side of the lorry or trailer to secure the load in position. Problems are often encountered in retaining the straps on one side of the lorry or trailer whilst mounting the straps to the other side.
Figs. 1 - 6 show sequentially in cartoon format a typical scenario. In Fig. 1 a strap 10 is fed over the top of a load 12 on a vehicle 14, with the far end 16 of the strap 10 being passed to the other side of the vehicle 14. A first end 18 of the strap 10 is secured to the vehicle 14 on one side as shown in Fig. 2 and the driver 20 or other operative moves to the other side of the vehicle 14. The strap 10 is then pulled relatively tight and secured to the other side of the vehicle 14. In tightening the strap 10, this can often dislodge the first end 18 of the strap from the first side of the vehicle (Fig. 4), and this first end 18 could even pass over the vehicle 14 (Fig. 5) and cause a hazard as illustrated in Fig. 6.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a temporary retaining device, the device including a body, a magnet provided in or on the body to enable the device to be temporarily mounted on a metal item by magnetic attraction, a part of the body being profiled to prevent a strap or fixing from being dislodged from the metal item or another mounting with the device mounted on the item, whilst the strap is being secured in place.
The body may include a profiled part over which a strap can extend when the strap is loose.
The magnet may be provided on or towards one side of the body, and the profiled part may be provided on the opposite side of the body.
A mounting part of the body may mount or locate the magnet, and a further part of the body may extend from the mounting part to permit the device to be removed from an item which is held against the magnet, using a levering action.
Two further parts of the body may extend from the mounting part in opposite directions, and a one of the further parts may provide the profiled part.
The magnet, or one or more metallic members extending from the magnet, may have a profiled face for engagement against the surface of an item. The profiled face may be arcuate.
A pair of metallic members may extend from the magnet, and the metallic members may be spaced from each other, on opposite sides of the magnet.
The magnet may be located within the body.
The magnet may be made of neodymium.
The body may be made of a plastics material.
A selectively removable cover may be provided locatable over the metallic members, when the device is not in use.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:Figs. 1 - 6 are diagrammatic sequential rear views illustrating restraining of a load on a lorry in a conventional technique without using a device according to the invention.

Figs. 7-20 show a temporary restraining device 22 suitable for restraining for instance load straps 10 on a lorry 14 during securing of the load
12. The device 22 includes a plastics material body 24 with a planar main section 26 with one end 28 which curves through 90° to provide a profiled part 30.
A neodymium magnet 32 is mounted within the body 24 on the opposite side of the main section 26 to which the profiled part 30 curves, towards the beginning of the profiled part 30. The magnet 32 is contained within an enclosed mounting part 34 with two metallic mounting members 36 on either side of the magnet 32, one towards the profiled part 30 and the other on the opposite side of the magnet 32 to the profiled part 30.
The metallic mounting members 36 extend outwardly from the mounting part 34 on the opposite side to which the profiled part 30 is curved. Each of the metallic mounting members 36 has an arcuate mounting face 38. A hole 40 is provided towards the end 42 of the main section 26 away from the profiled part 30 to enable the device 22 to be hung up, or tied to other such devices. Three transverse ribs 44 are provided on the side of the hole 40 towards the mounting part 34, to facilitate gripping of the device 22.
As shown in Figs. 19 and 20 a removable cover 46 may be provided which is a friction fit on the mounting part 34, and covers for instance the metallic mounting members 36 when the device 22 is not in use, thereby preventing materials becoming attached thereto for instance by magnetism.
Figs. 13 and 14 show a first example of use of the device 22. In this instance a load restraining strap 10 with a metallic loop 48 at one end, is located on a downwardly extending pin 50 on the underside of a lorry trailer 52. As can be seen if left, the loop 48 would generally simply slide downwardly off the pin 50, but mounting of the device 22 on the pin 50 by magnetic attraction immediately below the loop 48, retains the loop 48 in position on the pin 50. The arcuate mounting faces 38 will engage securely against the pin 50, and the strap 10 extends over the profiled part 30 to hang outwardly from the trailer 52.
The strap 10 could then be passed over a load 12 and onto the other side of the trailer 52 and securely mounted thereto. Generally the strap 10 would include a ratchet arrangement to permit tightening thereof, such that once the strap 10 is tightened, the loop 48 would not be able to drop downwardly off the pin 50. The device 22 can readily be removed from the pin 50 when not required. Whilst the neodymium magnet provides a very strong magnetic mounting on the pin 50, the main section 26 extending from the mounting part enables the device 22 to be moved off the pin 50 with a lever action.
It is to be realised that a number of such pins 50 will be provided along each side of the lorry trailer 52. Fig. 14 shows a position where the strap 10 might in fact be extending sideways with the loop 48 extending sideways, and as shown the device 22 still retains the loop 48 on the pin 50.
Figs. 15-17 show a different mounting arrangement for a strap 10, with a mounting hook 54 in the form of a V shape with one side 56 of the V mounted to the underside of the trailer 52, and the other side 58 of the V inclined downwards and inwardly beneath the trailer 52. Again a strap 10 is provided with a loop 48 which is hooked over the hook 54 to locate in the apex of the V. A device 22 mounted on the hook 54 retains the loop 48 in the apex of the hook 54 until the strap 10 is pulled tight, at which point the strap 10 will be held in position by the tension in the strap 10, and the device 22 can be removed.
Fig. 18 shows a further mounting arrangement where as in the above arrangements, the loop 48 is formed by a profiled length of bar to provide hooked fingers 60 on one side, which engage directly against a length of angle iron 62 running under the side of a lorry trailer 52. In this instance the device 22 is provided mounted on the angle iron 62 extending transversely with one end of the main section 26, engaging against one side of the loop 48, and the profiled part 30 engaging against the other side of the loop 48 to retain the loop 48 hooked on the angle iron 62 until the strap 10 is pulled tight.
There is thus described a device which can be used in a number of arrangements or situations to temporarily mount a strap on a vehicle or trailer, whilst the strap is secured in place to become securely mounted on the lorry or trailer. The device with the neodymium magnet provides a strong mounting on the trailer, but is shaped such that it can readily be removed and stored for subsequent reuse.
Whilst the device is usable in a number of arrangements, it has a quite straightforward structure such that it can be readily and inexpensively formed for long term use.
A range of modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the arrangement. For example the device may take a different form. A different magnetic arrangement could be provided. The metallic members could take a different form, and potentially a different number of them could be provided.
Whilst endeavouring in the foregoing specification to draw attention to 5 those features of the invention believed to be of particular importance it should be understood that the Applicant claims protection in respect of any patentable feature or combination of features hereinbefore referred to and/or shown in the drawings whether or not particular emphasis has been placed thereon.
