Frame Mounting
This invention concerns a frame mounting member, and also a window frame assembly.
When mounting window frames in an aperture, it is desirable that this can be carried out relatively quickly and without a wide range of different fittings being required for different frames and/or different size apertures.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a frame mounting member, the frame mounting member comprising an elongate member of uniform cross section which can be provided in a required length, and can be mounted in a building opening with an underside against the building part surrounding the opening, the frame mounting member comprising a profiled body with a base part from which a pair of spaced finger members are upstanding, which finger members can engage in recesses on a frame to mount the frame to the frame mounting member and hence to the frame, in the building opening, the base including a central part between the finger members, which central part can be flexed to enable the finger members to be moved towards each other or apart, and to enable the finger members to be located in recesses on the frame.
The finger members may have engagement formations, and may have one or more barbs thereon. The barbs may be on opposite sides of the finger members from the other finger member.
The central part of the elongate member may be profiled, to facilitate flexing thereof.
The central part of the elongate member may be of reduced thickness relative to surrounding parts of the elongate member, to facilitate flexing thereof.
The elongate member may include a pair of spaced recesses in the underside thereof, of a size and spacing to receive respective finger members of an elongate member located therebeneath to interconnect two frame mounting members, and provide a frame mounting assembly of greater thickness than a single frame mounting member.
The underside of the elongate member may taper upwardly from the finger members to the central part.
One or more top recesses may be provided on the top side of the elongate member to receive items such as a weather strip or gasket.
A side recess may be provided in a side edge of the elongate member to receive a part of a further item such as a window sill or trim plate. The side recess may be profiled so as to retain a part of a further item located therein.
The frame mounting member may be made of a wood composite material, or a plastics material such as polyurethane.
According to a further aspect of the invention there is provided a window frame assembly, the assembly comprising a wooden frame and a frame mounting member according to any of the preceding nine paragraphs, the frame mounting member being mounted to the window frame by engagement of the finger members in recesses in the window frame.
The assembly may be configured such that as the finger members are located in the frame recesses, the finger members are urged outwardly away from each other to engage with the window frame.
The assembly may include a weather strip or gasket mounted in one or more of the top recesses.
The assembly may include a window sill or trim plate mounted to the side recess of the elongate member.
The assembly may include two or more elongate members mounted together by respective finger members engaging in corresponding recesses in the underside of an elongate member.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic cross sectional side view of an elongate member according to the invention;
Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic cross sectional view of part of a window frame assembly mounted in a building aperture, incorporating the elongate member of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic perspective view of part of a window frame assembly according to the invention;
Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic cross sectional view of part of the assembly of
Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a similar view to Fig. 4, but showing the elongate member of Fig. 1 being mounted to the assembly;
Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view of the elongate member of Fig. 1 mounting a trim plate;
Fig. 7 is a similar view to Fig. 6, but showing the elongate member mounting a window sill; and
Figs. 8 and 9 are similar views to Fig. 1 but of further elongate members according to the invention.
Figs. 1 to 7 show a frame mounting member 10 mounting a window frame 12 in an aperture 14 in a building. The frame mounting member 10 is in the form of an elongate member of uniform cross section which can be made for instance by extrusion and cut to length as required. In this instance the frame mounting member 10 is made from a wood composite. Alternatively the frame mounting member 10 could be made from a plastics material such as polyurethane, or other materials having low heat conducting properties, as long as they also have a required strength.
Moving from left to right as shown in Fig. 1, the member 10 includes two n-shaped sections 16, 18, with the left most n-section 16 having an upper recess 20 on top of the upright thereof. The inner end section 18 has inwardly turned lower stems to define a converging opening 22 leading into a wider recess 24 defined thereby. A finger member 26 is provided upstanding from the cross member of the n-section 18. The finger member 26 has rounded upper corners, and a distal barb 28 facing to the left as shown in Fig. 4.
A gently rising wall 30 extends from lower end of the inner side member of the n-section 18, and leads to a broader central n section 32. Extending from the right hand side of the central n-section 32 is a similar gently sloping wall 34 leading to a further n-section 36 which is similar to the n-section 18, again with a finger member 26 upstanding therefrom, with a barb 28 facing outwardly.
On the right hand side of the member 10 as shown, instead of a first nsection, there is a sideways facing side recess 38 which has a generally Christmas tree profile to retain items therein.
The gently rising walls 30, 34 either side of the central n-section 32, mean that the parts of the frame mounting member 10 opposite the finger members 26 will engage against the edges of the aperture 14, to ensure a good engagement therewith by the frame assembly.
A further upper recess 40 is provided on the upper side of the part of the frame mounting member 10 providing the side recess 38. Weather strips 42 and/or gaskets can be located on the upper recesses 20, 40, diagrammatically in Fig. 6 as shown.
The frame mounting member 10 can be mounted to a wooden window frame 12 as shown in Figs. 2-5. The wooden window frame 12 comprises a frame member 44 and a sash 46 which mounts a glazing unit 48. As can be seen, two spaced recesses 50 are provided on the underside of the frame member 44, in which recesses 50 the finger members 26 of the frame mounting member 10 are engageable to mount together the frame mounting member 10 and the window frame 12.
As can be seen in Figs. 2 and 3, the window frame 12 with the frame mounting member 10 is mounted to a cavity wall 52 with inner and outer walls 55, 56 and an insulation filled cavity 58. The frame mounting member 10 is mounted to the outer wall 56. A window sill 60 is mounted to the side recess 38, with a complimentary profiled part 62 engageable in the profiled side recess 38 to retain the window sill 60 in place.
A layer of plaster 64 is provided around the inner wall 54 and on the inside horizontal surface of the aperture 14. Fig. 7 shows a similar view to Fig. 6 but in this instance a trim plate 66 is mounted with a correspondingly profiled part 68.
In Fig. 5 the frame mounting member 10 is shown being located onto the frame 44, with the finger members 26 engaging in the recesses 50. To locate the frame mounting member 10 in position it is necessary to flex it about the central section 32. The frame mounting member 10 is configured such that it will be in tension when the finger members 26 are located in the recesses 50, such that the barbs 28 in particular are urged into the wooden frame 44. As shown in Figs. 2-5 trim plates 70 made for instance of aluminium are mounted on the outside of the window frame 12, on the frame part 44 and sash 46.
A range of heights of frame mounting members 10 could be provided for use in different applications. If required two or more frame mounting members 10 can be mounted together to increase their overall height. In this instance the finger members 26 will engage through the converging openings 22 to the wider recesses 24 of the second n-sections 18.
Fig. 8 shows a frame mounting member 72 which is similar to the frame mounting member 10 except that the cross member 74 of the central nsection 32 is of reduced thickness to further facilitate flexing of the frame mounting member 10. In Fig. 9 a further frame mounting member 76 is shown which has an opening 78 through the central n-section cross piece to again further facilitate flexing.
There is thus described a frame mounting member, and also a window frame assembly incorporating such a member which provides for a number of advantages. Using the frame mounting member means that a single member or range of sizes of members can be used, and for instance cut into required lengths at the location of an installation. The frame mounting member can be used in a wide range of applications for mounting wooden frames.
In some instances the frame mounting member may not have some or any of the upper recesses, the outer n-shaped section, or the sideways facing recess.
It is to be realised that a wide range of modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the invention. For instance the frame mounting member may have a different profile, and a different formation could be provided to permit flexing thereof. The finger members may take a different form, and could for instance include a different number of barbs. The respective recesses may be differently shaped and/or located.
Whilst endeavouring in the foregoing specification to draw attention to those features of the invention believed to be of particular importance it should be understood that the Applicant claims protection in respect of any patentable feature or combination of features hereinbefore referred to and/or shown in the drawings whether or not particular emphasis has been placed thereon.
