Car derailers. - A portable derailing device comprises a main body portion 1 provided with a derailing surface 2 of usual contour and adapted to bear at one edge upon the surface of the rail, a screw-bolt 3 bearing upon the road-bed and adapted to adjust the device to suit the height of the rail, and a movable clamping- member 6 adapted to grip the underside of the rail head. The clamping-member 6 has two curved or cammed tracks 9, 10 on its upper surface engaging corresponding surfaces on the under side of the body 1 and is mounted upon an operating-bolt 15, which is movable transversely in a slot 16, engages a non-rotatable nut 20 carried by the clamping-member, and has a bevelled head 18 adapted to seat in a countersunk portion 17 of the body 1 when the bolt is at the inner or railward end of the slot. The recess 42 provided on the under side of the body to fit over the rail is made of a substantial width so as to adapt the device for use with rails of various widths. In operation, the device is placed in position with the rail in the recess 42, the bolt 15 at the outer end of the slot 16, and the clamping-member 6 in a lowered position; the bolt is then moved inwardly until the bevel 18 seats on the countersink 17 and the inner ends 12 of the tracks 9, 10 approach the rail and the bolt is finally given a few turns to engage the clamping-member with the under side of the rail head. The movements are effected by means of an operating-handle 32 and, in order to allow this handle to be finally passed over the head 3<1> of the bolt 3 and secured by a padlock 34 without impairing the clamping action, a spring 27 is located between the nut 20 and the under side of the clamping-member.
