Abstract

Disclosed is a device for mounting to the rear of the vehicle, the device having a mounting mechanism 81, a camera 84, and a sensor 83. The device can record movement, for instance, of a tailing vehicle. The sensor may be a proximity sensor such as a passive infrared sensor (PIR) which detects whether a tailing vehicle is tailgating, and in turn activate the camera if it is. The device may also display a message to the tailing vehicle warning them that they are being recorded. This device may therefore deter tailgating and provide evidence to third parties should an accident occur. The device may be powered either by a lithium-ion battery or by the 12V supply of the vehicle. It may be capable of being remotely controlled by a smartphone. It may be mounted by suction cups, adhesive, or magnetic means. The device may be rotationally adjustable. The camera may store data on a SD flash memory card or a dedicated hard drive. The device may have wired or wireless data communication means.

A DEVICE
Field of Invention
The pictured embodiment of the invention provides a device for amongst else monitoring tail-gating.
Brief Description of Figures
Figure 1 shows an isometric view of an embodiment of the device according to the present invention;
Figure 2 shows a reverse isometric view of the embodiment of the device shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3a shows a front view of the embodiment shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3b shows a top view ofthe embodiment shown in Figure 1;
Figure 4 shows an exploded isometric view of the embodiment shown in Figure 1;
Figure 5 shows a reverse isometric exploded view of the embodiment shown in Figure 1; and
Figure 6 shows sketches of a second embodiment of the device according to the present invention.
Detailed Description ofthe Embodiment
With reference to Figures 1 to 5 there is shown an embodiment of a device for mounting to a rear of a vehicle, comprising a mounting mechanism 1, a camera 3 and a sensor 45, wherein the device is enabled to record movement and arranged to be placed to rear of a vehicle in use.
In this way drivers or users who wish to deter tailgaters may be provided with a device for providing an alert to such third parties, and/or may be provided with the security of recording a potential incident for legal purposes.
The pictured embodiment further comprises a light source, comprising a plurality of light emitting diodes (LEDs) 19, and a data storage capability, comprising a displaceable flash SD memory card 6.
Further embodiments may further comprise a self-contained energy source, for example comprising a rechargeable lithium ion battery. The pictured embodiment is arranged to connect to the electrical supply of the vehicle, more particularly comprising a cable connection (not shown) to the 12v in car power supply, so as to enable aftermarket use.
In the pictured embodiment the device comprises an elongate body 2, arranged for maintaining the camera and sensor in a position for effective usage, for example in a rear windscreen.
In the pictured embodiment the mounting mechanism 1 comprises two resiliently deformable silicone or rubber suction cup discs 14 arranged at either end of the body.
The suction cups are formed by the discs, connected by a central core 15 to a circular rear head 13, the whole provided with consolidation and release means comprising a closure or vacuum creation mechanism having a closure lever 10, and a vacuum release tab 11.
The mounting mechanism further comprises rotatable mounting on a central cylindrical axle 9.
In the pictured embodiment therefore the mounting mechanism comprises a variable mounting mechanism, so as to enable rotatable variation in the mounting attitude of the camera and/or sensor to optimise the sensor or recording angle.
In this way the camera and/or sensor may be arranged for maximal effectiveness with respect to the exterior of the vehicle. In some embodiments the camera and/or sensor may be independently variable.
The body comprises a front casing 18, display vinyl mask 17, light diffuser 18, PCB 20, camera 3 and back casing.
The camera will store data as a continuous loop onto the SD card 6, which can then be removed and used in common personal computing equipment. Some embodiments may have a built in hard drive, wherein the device may have a data communication means. Such data communication means may comprise wireless or wired connectivity, for example intermachine operability such as Bluetooth (RTM) or radio waves, or a universal serial bus (USB) port respectively.
In the pictured embodiment the camera is activated by objects moving at around 10m via a distance sensor 45, comprises of sensor components: one 4 is spreading, another 5 receiving reflected waves. In further embodiments the sensor comprises a PIR sensor that measures infrared (IR) light radiating from objects in its field of view.
In some embodiments the device may comprise a display message for other vehicle drivers for example to show ‘Smile you’re on CCTV’ as in the second pictured embodiment, wherein the first pictured embodiment comprises a light up message formed by letters 7 that will solely display or alert as to recording state.
Such display message may be arranged to activate only when the camera is recording, and/or after trigger of the sensor.
In the pictured embodiment the display message 7 comprises a lit message saying ‘REC’ which is arranged to be lit upon activation of the camera. In some embodiments activation of the message may be subject to user activation, for example comprising a manual setting to permit activation by the sensor.
In some embodiments the camera is able to be quickly removed from the device, for example so as to discourage theft.
In some embodiments the energy source, supply or power cable may comprise a remote control means, enabled to switch the device on and off remotely. Such control means may be wired or wireless for example comprising infra-red control or intermachine operability such as Bluetooth (RTM) in order that a user’s smartphone may be enabled to control the device.
As shown in Figures 6 a separate mounting plate 81 could be used for attaching onto parcel shelves. The plate 81 is magnetic and locates underneath the parcel shelf such that the device attaches through a parcel shelf 82 for stability, so as to direct the camera 84 and sensor 83 rearwards.
In this way the second embodiment provides a display screen for alerting other road users they are being recorded, so as to discourage tail-gating.
Other embodiments may comprise adhesive variants, for example comprising selfadhesive or glass adhering stickers; and/or integrated embodiments which may comprise a permanent mounting mechanism, for example being accommodated within light fittings or vehicle glass.
The invention has been described by way of examples only and it will be appreciated that variation may be made to the above-mentioned embodiments without departing from the scope of invention.
With respect to the above description then, it is to be realised that the optimum dimensional relationships for the parts of the invention, to include variations in size, materials, shape, form, function and manner of operation, assembly and use, are deemed readily apparent and obvious to one skilled in the art, and all equivalent relationships to those illustrated in the drawings and described in the specification are intended to be encompassed by the present invention.
Therefore, the foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention.
