Description

HAIR TREATMENT COMPOSITION
The present invention relates to a mousse forming composition for use on hair, a mousse formed from a composition, and to a pack for dispensing mousse.
The present invention uses the mousse technology to deliver product to the hair. In some embodiments the mousse is used solely or primarily to deliver product; in other embodiments the mousse may additionally provide a hair styling function, giving a level of set/control.
According to an aspect of the present invention there is provided a mousse forming composition for use on (for example human) hair, the composition having a foamed density in the range 0.019 to 0.031 g/cm3.
The foamed density may be measured using the following protocol Apparatus
Calibrated foam density horn Balance (2 decimal places)
Waterbath
Method
Equilibrate the can to 25°C (or at other specified temperature) in the waterbath.
Ensure that the horn is clean, dry and within its calibration period.
Tare horn on the balance, then inject foam into it until it appears from the top of the horn.
Remove can and allow foam to build for approximately 5 seconds.
Remove excess foam and weigh cone with foam.
Foam density is weight of foam divided by 100.
Wash and dry the horn.
The present invention provides a “dry” mousse which doesn’t make the hair wet when applied. The composition, when foamed, results in a very dry texture.
In some embodiments the mousse is formulated as a style refreshing hair treatment product, applied to refresh a hair style, for example between hair washes rather than straight after hair washing.
In some embodiments the mousse is formulated as a dry shampoo mousse.
In some embodiments the present invention relates to hair mousse compositions and particularly, although not exclusively, to aerosol hair treatment and/or styling mousse compositions.
For example, in some embodiments the present invention is formed as an aerosol mousse that is designed to refresh/revive styles between washes. A further aspect provides a hair treatment pack comprising, a container housing a mousse forming composition, the composition having a foamed density in the range 0.019 to 0.031 g/cm3 and the pack pressure being in the range 40 to 60 PSIG at 25°C, for example 45 to 55 PSIG.
The composition may comprise a surfactant, or a combination of surfactants. Specific combinations of surfactants can be selected to surround oil and grease in the hair so that it lifts away more easily when the hair is eventually washed. In some embodiments the surfactant comprises TEA-lauryl sulphate.
The composition comprises amphoteric surfactant, non-ionic surfactant and anionic surfactant.
The amphoteric surfactant may be present in the range 0.15% to 0.61% per unit.
The non-ionic surfactant may be present in the range 0.09% to 0.9% per unit
The anionic surfactant may be present in the range 0.25% to 0.75% per unit.
In some embodiments the term “unit” relates to the finished aerosol product - the % of material within the can when the concentrate/liquid/bulk/product is blended with the propellant (LPG). This is a true % and not a volume as will be the same whatever the size of the finished unit.
The composition may further comprise a humectant, such as glycerine or propylene glycol. The humectant may be present in the range 0.45% to 1.8% per unit.
The composition may further comprise conditioning agent. The conditioning agent may be a cationic conditioning agent. The conditioning agent may be present in the range 0.675% to 1.125% per unit. In some embodiments the conditioning agent may comprise polyquaternium-4 or polyquaternium-10 or Amodimethicone.
In some embodiments the pack is formulated as an aerosol. The composition may further comprise propellant, for example a liquid petroleum gas. The propellant may be present in the range 7.5% to 15% per unit.
The propellant could, for example, be comprised of Isobutane and/or Propane and/or Butane. For example, in some embodiments a blend of Isobutane and propane is used.
In one embodiment, for example, the propellant blend is 84.2% Isobutane +/- 1%, 15.8% +/- I % Propane mix. A further aspect provides a style-refreshing hair treatment pack comprising: i) a container; ii) a mousse forming composition comprising: amphoteric surfactant in the range 0.15% to 0.61 % per unit non-ionic surfactant in the range 0.09% to 0.9% per unit anionic surfactant in the range 0.25% to 0.75% per unit humectant in the range 0.45% to 1.8% per unit cationic conditioning agent in the range 0.675% to 1.125% per unit and iii) propellant in the range 7.5% to 15% per unit, in which the finished pack pressure is in the range 40-60PSIG at 25°C, and in which the foam density of the mousse when discharged is in the range 0.019 to 0.031 g/cm3.
The composition of aspects and embodiments of the present invention may further comprise one or more vitamins.
The composition may further comprise one or more silicones.
The composition may further comprise one or more physical and/or chemical sunscreen additives.
The composition may further comprise a hair dye.
The composition may further comprise a coloured pigment.
The composition may further comprise a film former. The film former may be included to aid with transfer resistance of product containing coloured pigments and/or to allow the product to have more control/hold.
In some embodiments the pH of the composition is approximately 6.5 +/- 0.5. The composition may further comprise a pH conditioner, for example citric hydroxide or sodium hydroxide.
In some embodiments the specific gravity at 20oC of the composition is approximately 1.0 +/- 0.01.
In some embodiments the organoleptic appearance of the resulting mousse is a thick white foam.
The composition may further comprise a foam stabiliser, for example polysorbate 20.
The composition may further comprise a foaming agent In some embodiments the foaming agent may comprise, for example, polysorbate 20, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, or TEA-lauryl sulphate.
The composition may further comprise a preservative.
The composition may further comprise a natural oil or water based natural extract or blend of plant based materials.
The composition may further comprise panthenol.
In some embodiments the composition is unfragranced. In other embodiments the composition may further comprise a fragrance.
The composition may further comprise aqua, for example distilled or deionised water.
The container used in aspects and embodiments of the present invention may be a can, for example aluminium In some embodiments the pack is formed as an aerosol dispensing pack with a delivery nozzle for discharging foamable mousse formulation.
The pack of aspects and embodiments of the present invention may be configured to have a discharge rate approximately in the range I to 6g/s"'. The discharge rate may be in the range 1.5 to 2g/s'.
In some embodiments TEA-lauryl sulphate, cocamidopropyl betaine and polysorbate 20 are used to contribute to the mousse texture.
In some embodiments the composition comprises: water (as a solvent); a foaming agent; surfactant; and conditioning agent. The composition is added to a container together with propellant to produce a foamable mousse formulation.
In one embodiment the composition comprises: water; isobutane, propane, propylene glycol, polyquaternium-4, phenoxyethanol, tea-lauryl sulphate, polysorbate 20, perfume, cocamidopropyl betaine, ethylhexylglycerin, panthenol, glycerine, benzyl salicylate, cocos nucifera oil, sodium hydroxide, citric acid, limonene and linalool.
