Abstract
A guard may be fitted to the internal face of a door and associate door lock. The guard may be positioned around the cylinder lock which may be key or thumb turn operated. The guard may be located using the lock mounting screws and may be fitted with a slot 3 to allow adjustment when fitting. The guard may be angled or chamfered 5 to avoid interfering with the interior door handle. The guard may have a flange 4 to resist turning. In use, the guard is fitted to the inside face of a door. If the door is partially forced, for example by breaking a glass panel a user may reach in, however due to the depth of the guard if a key is left in the lock (Figure 3) the guard will surround and prevent access to the key.

The door locking cylinder guard
The cyiirsder guard offers protection and added security to Euro or Oval cylinder locks fitted to an entrance door. The cylinder guard has a slot {1) cut out to allow the back plate (2) to fit over the locking cylinder internally. This slot may be produced to fit Euro {traditional key hole shape) or Oval cylinders. The s|ot shown in figures 1,4 and 5 and temised as number 1 is universal and will fit both Euro and Oval cylinders.
The cylinder guard fitted to the Internal handle of a door which houses a Euro or Oval cylinder is secured by removing the existing lower bolt or screw of the handle, mounting the cylinder guard over the Euro or Oval cylinder and re fitting the handle bolt er screw through the smaller slot (3). This will secure the cylinder guard in position.
Many Euro or Oval cylinders are fitted with a thumb turn which removes the need for the use of a key internally. The thumb turns are normally fitted or specified for quick and ease of escape in the case of an emergency. A thumb turn increases the possibility of attempted break In through the use of a hand or toOts or equipment through a letter box, a hole cut in the door or through broken glass. The cylinder guard offers a shield against this practice.
The cylinder guard which attaches to the existing handle via the lower handle boit or screw has a flange (4) that sits to the side of the handle Showrtin figure 2 to stop forced rotation of the cylinder guard to access the thumb turn orkey that has been left in the lock {cylinder). The chamfered edge (5) to the top of the cylinder guard is to allow the lever of the existing handle to he moved when opening the door giving adequate clearance for fingers and thumbs.
The cylinder guard is to be produced in a durable material strongenough to withhold physical force from a person standing outside attempting to locate the lock internally through the letter box, a hole in the door or through broken glass.
The cylinder guard can be produced as a standard, *one fits all' product or can be produced to a specified size to suit a particular appiication.
Claims (7)
- Claims % The cylinder guard unit comprising attachment means for attaching the unit to an existing internal door handle of an entry or exit door that houses a locking cylinder via the existing lower handle bolt or screw. Fitting over the existing locking cylinder allowing access to the lock from inside the property but protecting the lock which is shielded by the cylinder guard from attempted break in via the letter box, a hole in the door or through broken glass. 2> The cylinder guard unit according to claim 1 has a slot where the existing handle bolt or screw passes through to secure the cylinder guard. The slot allows for vertical movement of the cylinder guard to match different handle types.
- 3. The cylinder guard unit according to claim 1 fits over the existing locking cylinder. The slot is elongated to allow for vertical movement of the cylinder guard to match different handle types.
- 4. The cylinder guard unit according to claim 1 shields the locking cylinder which may be fitted with a thumb turn or if the key is left in the lock internally leaving the door vulnerable to break in from hand, tools or equipment accessing the lock via the letter box, a hole in the door or through broken glass. The shield on the cylinder guard which has a flange that sits to the side of the existing door handle may be produced at any height or width to match the application.
- 5. The cylinder guard unit according to claim 4 has a flange or extension to the shield on the cylinder guard which sits to the side of the existing handle. The flange stops any forced rotation of the cylinder guard which would expose the lock (cylinder) making the door vulnerable. The existing handle back piate offers an obstruction to any rotation of the cylinder guard giving a permanent fixed position and protection to the locking cylinder. I, The cylinder guard according to claim 1 Is an attachment to the existing internal door handle that houses a locking cylinder has a chamfered top to ailow the downward movement of the handle iever allowing clearance for fingers and thumbs during operation of the door handle.
- 7. The cylinder guard according to any of the preceding claims may be produced to any dimension in the height, width or depth to suit any handle locking cylinder application.
- 8. The cylinder guard according at any of the preceding claims may be produced in any material to suit the application.
- 9. The cylinder guard according to any of the preceding claims wlti be produced handed. Left: hand or right hand to suit the application.
