Abstract

A mechanical pipe repair sleeve includes an interlocking casing, preferably from two identical components 1 using locating pins 4 and keyholes 5, is assembled around a gasket 3 fitted to an existing pipe or cable 8, forming a female screw thread at each end. A pair of screw components 2 are assembled, preferably using locating pins 6 and location holes 7, at each end of the casing 1, each forming a male screw thread. Each of the screw components 2 is inserted into one end of the casing component 1 and tightened, compressing gasket 3 at the same time and forming a seal.

Description

I

Mechanical Pipe Repair Joint This invention relates to a mechanical pipe repair joint that that forms around an existing pipe or cable.

Such repair systems are known but suffer from the disadvantage that they use clamping forces to compress a gasket material and form a seal. This invention uses compressive forces to compress a gasket material to form a seal. Compressive forces are much more evenly spread through the gasket materials than clamping forces.

The object of this invention is to provide a quick, easy and safe repair on utility pipelines or cables.

Accordingly, this invention provides mechanical repair to a wide range of existing pipes and cables.

Preferably the joint is made from a suitable plastic to prevent sparks occurring during fitting and preventing corrosion due to dissimilar metals under certain circumstances.

FIGURE 1 shows an exploded view of the whole joint; FIGURE 2 is a section showing how the two identical casing sections interlock to form a female screw thread; FIGURE 3 shows a cross section through the pipe or cable after assembly; FIGURE 4 is a section showing how the compression of the gasket material is achieved during the tightening of the screw threads.

As shown in figureithe joint comprises of two identical casing sections 1 and two pairs of identical screw sections 2. These sections have a two start thread for speed and ease of assembly and can be manufactured to fit any diameter of pipe or cable.

These sections are arranged and interlocked about a suitable gasket material 3 applied about a pipe or cable 8.

Figure 2 shows how the two identical casing sections I are interlocked around the pipe or cable by a locating pin 4 passing through the wide end of keyhole 5 and sliding the two sections together so that the locating pin 4 is sited at the narrow end of the keyholes. When in this position the casing sections 2 form a female thread at each end of the casing These sections have a two start thread for speed and ease of assembly and can be manufactured to fit any diameter of pipe or cable. The size and shape of component 2 can be altered to fit around valves and other items.

Figure 3 shows how two identical screw sections 2 are interlocked around the pipe or cable using a locating pin 6 and a locating hole 7. When the screw sections 2 are interlocked they form a two start male screw thread which matches the two start female thread of the casing section 1. This procedure is followed twice to form an interlocked screw section at each end of the casing section 1.

This figure also shows the components shown in figure 2 in their assembled position.

Figure 4 shows how the joint appears after the interlocked screw sections 2 has been inserted and screwed tight into the casing section 1. The tightening via the matching screw threads compresses the gasket material 3 to form a seal around the pipe or the cable 8.
