Abstract

An attachable power tool workbench 1 that can be fixed to an existing portable work/saw bench 2, preferably by use of a movable bolt strap system (6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, fig 2) that locates between a fixing rail (5, fig 2) in the power tool workbench and holes provided on the surface of the existing portable work/saw bench. The attachable power tool workbench and existing work/saw bench may be folded together for storage, during which time the attached power tools may be left in place.

Description

1 2434769 Attachable Power Tool Workbench This invention relates to a
power tool bench that can be attached to an existing portable work/saw bench.

Storage and workspace is at a premium for most D.I.Y. woodworkers. The invention allows users to maximise on existing workbench equipment, workspace and storage space.

Once mated with an existing work/saw bench, the power tool bench can be folded flat for storage in a conventional way, usually against a garage, shed or workshop wall.

The power tool bench also allows the user to leave the attached power tools in place during storage. The entire unit can then be used instantaneously once it has been unfolded.

An example of the invention will now be described with reference to the attached drawings: Figure 1 shows how the power tool bench will be mated with an example of a typical portable work/saw bench, Figure 2 details how the power tool bench substructure will be fixed to an existing work/saw bench (the power tool bench surface is not shown for clarification purposes), Figure 3 is a sectional drawing which details the fixing arrangement, Figure 4 is an alternative example of the power tool bench substructure fixing system, Figure 5 shows how the combined power tool bench and existing work/saw bench is folded flat for storage.

Figure 1 details the basic structure of the attachable power tool bench. The bench surface (1) contains the necessary slots for a power saw (1 3), a router (14) and jigsaw (15). The power tool bench can accommodate large boards for cutting because of its length and large surface area. The power tool bench is placed upon the surface jaws of an existing portable work/saw bench (2). The existing work/saw bench (2) will need to have a load bearing capacity of 100kg plus. The power tool bench requires an extended over hang space to the left of the attached work/saw bench (z). This over hang allows an attached power saw to tilt and lower for mitre function and to accommodate the necessary space required for variable cutting depth. A telescopic anti-tip leg (3) is included in the design in order to avoid any balance problems that may occur because of the over hang. The leg (3) can be positioned as required along the leading edge of the power tool bench (1). If the available work/saw bench jaws (2) cannot open up to allow a sufficient gap required for the router position (14) then the power tool bench can be moved to provide an adequate forward overhang (y). In this instance, two telescopic legs (3) can be utilised at either end of the power tool bench and can be positioned at (x) as shown on the drawing.

Figure 2 shows the substructure (4) fixing arrangements in detail. The drawing omits the bench surface detail (1) in order to show how the fixing process works. The power tool bench is fixed to the moveable jaws (2) of the portable worklsaw bench by utilising the existing vice peg holes that are positioned along the length of the jaws.

There are four fixing positions along two sets of fixing rails (5) -two fixing positions to each rail. The two rails (5) are placed over the portable worklsaw bench jaws (2).

A standard coach bolt (6) and washer (7) are pushed through the slot in the movable strap (8). The bolt can move from left to right in the strap and the strap can move north to south along the length of the fixing rail. A spacer washer (9) is placed over the vice peg hole in the portable work/saw bench jaw. The moveable strap and bolt assembly can now be located by pushing the bolt end through the washer (9) and vice peg hole in the work/saw bench jaw (2). A standard thumbscrew (11) and oversized washer (10) are screwed onto the bolt that is now protruding through the bottom of the portable worklsaw bench jaw. The arrangement is designed to allow fixing to a wide variety of commercially available portable work/saw benches. It is also designed to give the user optimum flexibility in order to accommodate the wide variety of power saws (13), routers (14) and jigsaws (15) available.

Figure 3 is a sectional drawing, which shows the bolt and strap fixing arrangement in detail. The strap (8) has a treaded edge at each end, this is placed upon a rubber layer (12), which lies along the length of the fixing rail (5). This is designed to provide maximum grip between the power tool bench and portable work/saw bench during storage. It also helps prevent shock and vibration movement during use.

Figure 4 shows an alternative fixing arrangement for the substructure (4). Here the moveable straps (8) have been redesigned and now become pie shaped wedges. There are four pie wedges, which can be located in any of the six location holes as shown.

The bolt (6) is still fixed through a vice peg hole located on the portable work/saw bench jaw (2). The bolt is moved left to right along the slot in the wedge and the wedge is turned through 360 degrees in the hole provided in the power tool bench substructure. Again, it is firmly fixed in place by a standard thumbscrew (11) and oversized washer (10). This box type arrangement (4) is attached to the power tool bench surface by using the bolt lugs (18) as shown. Again, this arrangement is designed to allow fixing to a wide variety of portable work/saw benches.

Figure 5 demonstrates how the power tool bench and portable work/saw bench can be folded flat for storage. The combined unit can be stored flat against a wall by the use of fixing hooks (17). These are designed to keep the unit off the floor and prevent any undue strain upon the folded legs of the portable work/saw bench (2). The power saw (13), router (14) and jigsaw are shown in their fixed positions. These will be connected to a standard push/stop safety switch (16) when used. The telescopic leg (3) is shown in its retracted stow position.
