Abstract

A food packaging product which is environmentally friendly, biodegradable, compostable, grease resistant, moisture resistant and heat sealable comprises paperboard coated on one or both sides with a water-based acrylic copolymer. The paperboard may be first coated with a calcium carbonate based coating. Ready made foodstuffs may be displayed in a chiller cabinet with such a paperboard.

Description

Patent Specification

This invention relates to an environmentally friendly, biodegradeable and compostable food packaging product.

When packaging certain food stuffs such as sandwiches they can be packaged in paperboard with a polyethylene coating or in some type of clear plastic carton to ensure the sandwich stays fresh while on display for sale in a chiller cabinet.

However the use of these two types of packaging methods is not entirely environmentally friendly. The clear plastic packaging material is not biodegradable and although paperboard products may appear to be a better option, the use of polyethylene coating does not allow this type of packaging to be fully biodegradable.

To overcome this and offer a fully environmentally friendly alternative a food approved paperboard product can be coated with a formulated, water based acrylic coating, which offers the same benefits of a polyethylene coated product i.e. the new product acts as moisture barrier, is grease resistant and heat sealable. This coating is approved for food contact.

The water based acrylic coating can be applied to any type of base board product, uncoated paper board, a one side coated paper board or a two side coated paper board.

The paperboard is approved for food contact.

With the application of an aqueous based coating the product becomes totally biodegradable and compostable, while retaining the other essential properties required for this type of application.

The best results were obtained with the use of a one side coated substrate, with a calcium carbonate based coating and the water based acrylic coating being applied to the coated side of the paperboard. The optimum coating weight for the water based acrylic is lOgsm. The actual gsm can be adjusted depending on the precise end use.

However, in tests using this as a packaging medium for sandwiches, lOgsm of coating was found to give an effective and consistent, barrier coating.

The water based coating is formulated to fit the purposes of this product. The coating is described as a water based acrylic copolymer and is used to form an homogenous film on the surface of the substrate.

Its presence as an even coating coverage, seals the surface, producing a surface energy barrier that ensures no transfer of moisture or fatty acids. The measured result gives a Kit barrier result between 5 and 16.

The coating gives heat seal between 100 and 200 degrees C, with a dwell time up to seconds and a clamp pressure of 5 to 30 psi
