Description
DOOR COVERING
The present invention relates to a door covering for covering a whole side of a door. In particular, it relates to a door covering for improving the appearance of internal doors.
Internal doors in domestic houses are often decorated by painting. This has the disadvantage that typically only one or two colours of paint are used, and so an attractive or striking appearance is difficult to obtain. Children's bedrooms may be highly decorated, for example with wallpaper showing cartoon characters. However, the door in such a room is more difficult to decorate.
The present invention provides, in a first aspect, a door covering for covering a whole side of a door; the door covering comprising a flexible sheet having a picture at least on one side; top fastening means for attaching a top edge of the sheet to the door; and bottom fastening means for attaching a bottom edge of the sheet to the door, such that the sheet may be securely attached to the door with the picture visible.
Preferably, the sheet is pre-creaged with at least one crease corresponding to a standard door size.
This has the advantage that the door covering is easily and securely held in place on the door, without introducing unwanted creases or folds in the sheet.
Preferably, the bottom fastening strip comprises a strip of card having two sides, the strip of card provided with adhesive on one side for attachment to the sheet, and adhesive on the other side for attachment to the door.
This has the advantage that the strip of card provides rigidity to the door covering, in order to improve the ease of attachment of the bottom edge of the sheet to a door.
Preferably, the adhesive of the bottom fastening strip comprises double sided self adhesive tape, one side of the double sided self adhesive tape affixed to the strip of card.
This has the advantage that the bottom fastening strip is easily and cheaply manufactured.
Preferably, the top fastening strip is a strip of double sided self adhesive tape.
This has the advantage that the top fastening means may be easily and quickly applied to a top surface of a door.
Preferably, the flexible sheet is formed of nylon, and the picture is printed Onto the sheet by means of sublimation printing.
This has the advantage that the picture is of very high quality.
The present invention provides, in a second aspect, a kit for covering a door comprising; a flexible sheet having a picture on at least one side for covering the door; and a top fastening strip for attaching a top edge of the sheet to the door and a bottom fastening strip for attaching a bottom edge of the sheet to the door; wherein the top fastening strip and bottom fastening strip may be affixed to the sheet to securely attach the sheet to the door.
Preferably the sheet is pre-creased with at least one crease corresponding to a standard door size.
This has the advantage that the door covering is easily and securely held in place on the door, without introducing creases or folds in the sheet.
Preferably, the bottom fastening strip comprises a strip of card having two sides, the strip of card provided with adhesive on one side for attaching the strip to the sheet, and adhesive on the other side for attaching the strip to the door.
This has the advantage that the strip of card provides rigidity to the door covering, in order to improve the ease of attachment of the bottom edge of the sheet to a door.
Preferably, the adhesive of the bottom fastening comprises double sided self adhesive tape, one side of the double sided self adhesive tape affixed to the strip of card.
Preferably, the kit of parts further comprises a measuring card for measuring the location of a handle on the door.
This has the advantage that the location of the handle can be accurately marked on the sheet, in preparation for cutting the sheet to fit around the handle.
Preferably, the kit of parts further comprises a creasing card, the creasing card having a self adhesive on one side.
This has the advantage that the creasing card can be removeably fastened to the sheet to assist in accurately forming a crease and fold in the sheet, in order to reduce the width of the sheet such that it may be used on narrower doors.
The present invention provides, in a third aspect, a method of covering a whole side of a door with a door covering, the method comprising: providing a door covering comprising a flexible sheet having a picture on one side; attaching a top attachment strip along a top edge of the door or the sheet; attaching a bottom attachment strip along a bottom edge of the door or the sheet; using the bottom attachment strip to attach a bottom part of the sheet to a bottom part of the door; and using the top attachment strip to attach a top part of the sheet to a top part of the door; wherein: the door cover is affixed to the door with the picture facing outwardly.
Preferably the sheet is pre-creased with at least one crease corresponding to a standard door size and the method comprises folding over a long side of the sheet at the said crease or one of the said creases in order to reduce the width of the sheet.
This has the advantage that the flexible sheet is securely attached to the door. The order of attachment of the top and bottom fastening strips allows the top of the sheet to be trimmed if necessary.
Preferably, prior to attachment of the sheet to the door an aperture is cut in the sheet at a position to allow a handle on the door to pass through the sheet when the sheet is attached to the door.
This has the advantage that the door handle can still be used, and the appearance of the picture is not substantially effected.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying figures, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the sheet of the present invention before attachment to a door; Figure 2 is an illustration of a step of attaching adhesive tape; Figure 3 is an illustration of a step of ironing on an adhesive strip; and Figure 4 is a front elevation view of the door covering of the present invention attached to a door; and Figure 5 is a front elevation view of the door covering of the present invention initially placed on a door.
As shown in Figure 1, a door covering comprises a flexible sheet 1 of approximately the same size as a door 10. The sheet 1 is provided with a top fastening strip 3 and a bottom fastening strip 4. The top fastening strip 3 is for fastening a top edge of the sheet 1 to a top side of the door 10, and the bottom fastening strip is for fastening a bottom edge of the sheet 1 to a bottom side of the door 10.
The bottom fastening strip 4 comprises a strip of card with a length of double sided adhesive tape affixed to each side of the card. The bottom fastening strip 4 thus has adhesive on both sides. The two lengths of self adhesive tape are each covered with a removable backing, so that the adhesive does not accidentally stick before it is ready for use. -7-.
The top fastening strip 4 comprises a length of double sided self adhesive tape. Both sides of the self adhesive tape are covered with a removable backing, so that the adhesive does not accidentally stick before it is ready for use.
A picture is provided on one side the sheet, on the opposite side to the fastening strips 3, 4. The picture preferably extends over the whole side of the sheet. The picture may be of any subject matter, but is preferably a perspective view to give an illusion of depth when the covered door is closed.
The sheet 1 is rectangular in shape, of dimensions to fit a standard large door. The size of the sheet 1 can be reduced in order to fit smaller doors.
If the side of the door 10 to which the door covering is to be fitted has a door handle 11, then it will be necessary to make a slit in the sheet 1 in order to allow the handle to be used once the door covering is attached.
The distance from the base of the door 10 to the centre of the door handle 11, and the distance from an edge of the door adjacent the handle 11 to the centre of the handle ii is also measured. A pencil cross may then be made on the sheet 1, on the side without the picture. The height of the door handle 11 is then measured. A straight line is then marked on the sheet 1 and centred on the original cross.
This line may extend in a longitudinal direction, i.e. along the length of the sheet 1, and is preferably approximately 3mm longer than the measured height of the door handle 11.
In order to cut cleanly along the marked line, the sheet 1 may be folded transversely about the marked cross, preferably by placing a piece of paper behind the sheet 1 in order to obtain a clean folding line. A cut may then be made, for example with a pair of scissors, along the length of the marked line. A slit is thus provided in the sheet 1, allowing the door handle 11 to be used once the door covering is in place and without causing undue distortion of the picture.
The sheet 1 is preferably pre-creased with one or more crease lines. By pre-creasing it is meant that the sheet is creased with fold lines prior to supply to an end user whereby the end user has available to him or her one or several creases already in the fabric and does not have to create a crease himself or herself. In Figure 5 a pre- creased sheet 1 is shown with pre-formed creases 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25. The crease lines 20-25 correspond to a standard size of door. The creases 20-25 are formed along the length of the sheet 1 to correspond to one or more standard widths of door. Alternatively or additionally pre-creased crease lines could extend along the width of the sheet 1 to correspond to one or more standard heights of door. Each crease is formed to encourage the sheet 1 to fold away from the side of the sheet 1 having the picture.
If one of several pre-creaged lines is to be used, the other creased lines are flattened out by ironing the sheet 1 with a conventional domestic iron. An adhesive may then be placed inside the fold of the sheet 1, adjacent to the fold line. The adhesive tape may be of a type which forms a strong bond by the placing of a damp cloth over the sheet 1, and being ironed at a hot temperature setting for approximately io seconds. This step is shown in Figure 3.
The amount of excess folded over material may be reduced by cutting, or it may be left in place.
The pre-creasing of the sheet 1 to correspond with standard widths of doors ensures that the crease line, and subsequent fold, are straight and parallel to the edge of the sheet 1.
The sheet 1 can also be adjusted to fit non-standard width doors. Then all of the lines are flattened out by ironing the sheet 3. with a conventional domestic iron. In order to adjust the width of the sheet 1, the bottom fastening strip 4 may be used to determine the adjustment needed. The length of the fastening strip 4 is the same as the width of the sheet 1. The width of the door 10 is first marked on the bottom fastening strip 4 with a pencil or pen.
The bottom fastening strip 4 is then cut at the marked point, and both the excess material cut of f the fastening strip is retained.
The sheet 1 is laid on a flat, clean surface with the picture facing downwardly. The excess material cut from the bottom fastening strip 4 is placed adjacent a long edge of the sheet 1, extending laterally across the sheet 1. A mark is made on the sheet 1 at the end of the excess part of the bottom fastening strip, and a corresponding mark is made approximately every 15cm along the length of the sheet 1.
These marks are joined to form a folding line, indicating - 10 - where the sheet 1 is to be folded over in order to adjust the width of the sheet 1 to fit the door 10.
A creasing card may be provided in order to more easily create the fold in the sheet 1. The creasing card is provided with self adhesive tape at both ends of the creasing card, on the same side of the creasing card. The self adhesive tape is covered with a backing cover, the backing cover removeabj.e from the self adhesive tape for use, this step being shown in Figure 2. The creasing card is stuck to the sheet 1 with an edge aligned along the folding line. The excess fabric of the sheet 1 is folded over the card along the folding line, and ironed with a conventional iron on a cool temperature setting. This creates a sharp crease in the sheet 1. The creasing card is then detached from the sheet 1, and repositioned further along the folding line. The process of folding over the sheet 1 and ironing in a crease is then repeated.
Once a crease has been made along the length of the sheet 1, the folded material is secured in a folded position by adhesive tape placed inside the fold of the sheet 1, adjacent to the fold line. The adhesive tape may be of a type which forms a strong bond by the placing of a damp cloth over the sheet 1, and being ironed at a hot temperature setting for approximately.o seconds. This step is shown in Figure 3. The amount of excess folded over material may be reduced by cutting, or it may be left in place.
In order to attach the door covering to the door 10, the backing is removed from one side of the bottom fastening - 11 - strip 4, and the exposed self adhesive is used to attach the bottom fastening strip adjacent to a bottom edge of the sheet 1, the bottom fastening strip 4 extending laterally across the sheet 1. The top fastening strip comprising a length of double sided self adhesive tape is fixed to the top side of a door, i.e. the side facing upwardly. The sheet 1 is placed on the floor at the base of the door 10, with the picture facing downwardly. The remaining backing of the bottom fastening strip 4 is removed, and the exposed adhesive of the bottom fastening strip 4 is fixed to the bottom edge of the door 10, i.e. the side facing downwardly.
The rigidity of the card of the bottom fastening strip 4 allows the flexible sheet 1 to be affixed to the bottom edge of the door 10 easily and without introducing unwanted creases or folds into the picture.
The sheet 1 is then lifted by a top edge of the sheet 1, and the door handle 11 carefully passed through the slit formed in the sheet 1. The sheet 1 is then pressed onto the top fastening strip 3 which is already positioned at the top of the door 10, such that the sheet 1 is taught and the picture is without creases or folds. The initial placement of the bottom fastening strip 4 on the sheet and the initial placement of the top fastening strip on the door 10 allows the sheet 1 to be easily and accurately attached to the door.
If the height of the door 10 is substantially less than the length of the sheet 1, the sheet 1 is attached to the top fastening strip 3 away from the top edge of the sheet 1, ensuring that the sheet 1 is taut. The initial placement of the top fastening strip 3 on the top of the door 10 means - 12 - that measurement of the height of the door 10 to calculate the final location of the top fastening strip 3 is not required.
Excess material from the top of the sheet 1 may be removed by cutting it with scissors. Since the top edge of the sheet 1 is not readily visible, a smooth cutting line is not required.
The picture is designed so that it is still attractive and useable if it is reduced in width and/or if an upper portion of the sheet 1 is removed.
The sheet 1 is preferably formed a fabric, for example nylon, polyester or other fabric. The fabric must be able to be creased, and preferably creases can be removed from the fabric with a domestic steam iron. Preferably, the fabric is stretchable. This allows the fabric to be easily placed on the door around the door handle. Preferably, the fabric is not easily torn.
Preferably, the sheet 1 is pre-creased along its length for UK standard door widths.
