Abstract

An apparatus and method for determining suture integrity and in particular for determining the presence of leaks in an area where tissue has been joined. A clamp (7, 9) is used to press together tissue to form a substantially gas-tight seal around the area of tissue that has been joined by suture (3) such that the clamp and joined tissue form an enclosed space. A gas source (1) that can emit a detectable gas is placed within the enclosed space and a gas detector (15) is used to detect any gas that escapes from the enclosed space where the sutures have joined the tissue.
