AFAN
This invention relates to a fan and, more especially, this invention relates to a fan for providing cool air for a person.
During hot weather, fans are often used to try and cool persons. The fans do not operate in a satisfactory manner because they simply circulate the air. If the air is already hot, then the fans simply circulate this hot air and the cooling effect is not satisfactory. Air conditioning systems are known but such systems are considerably more expensive than simple fans.
It is an aim of the present invention to obviate or reduce the above mentioned problem that exists with fans, whilst avoiding the need for using expensive air conditioning systems.
Accordingly, in one non-limiting embodiment of the present invention there is provided a fan for providing cool air for a person, which fan comprises a body, an impeller which rotates in order to circulate air for cooling purposes, and auxiliary cooling means, the auxiliary cooling means comprising a container for receiving a material which is able to be frozen, and the fan being such that in use the material is frozen and the air which is circulated by the fan is cooled by the frozen material.
The fan of the present invention is able to provide more efficient cooling than known fans because the fan of the present invention has the auxiliary cooling means which is able to cool the air which is being circulated by the fan. Thus the fan of the present invention is more efficient than known fans, and cooling is able to be achieved without the expense of using air conditioning systems.
Preferably, the fan includes mounting means which mounts the container on the fan. Also preferably, the fan is one in which the mounting means mounts the container on a front part of the fan such that the container is in the path of air leaving the fan. In this way, the air is cooled at the point of discharge from the fan. Other arrangements may be employed so that, for example, the mPunting means may mount the container on a rear part of the fan such that the container is in the path of air sucked into the fan. Such air that is sucked into the fan will be cooled as it is blown from the fan.
The mounting means may be a releasable mounting means whereby the container is releasably mounted on the fan. The container is then able to be removed for re-freezing of material once the frozen material has melted. In cases where the fan is required to provide substantially continuous cooled air over a long period, the fan may need to be used with two or more of the containers in succession. The use of the releasable mounting means enables a container with frozen material always to be ready for being placed on the fan, whilst a used container with melted material is able to be placed in a refrigerator, freezer or other freezing apparatus for having its material re-frozen.
The releasable mounting means may be a clip-mounting means.
Alternatively, the releasable mounting means may be a pin and hole mounting means. Other types of mounting means may be employed if desired so that, for example, the releasable mounting means may be a clamp mounting means.
The container may be a sealed container. Alternatively, the container may have an inlet which is openable and closeable for the purpose of replacing or topping up the material. The inlet may be closed with a cap such for example as a screw cap. The inlet may be closed with other closure devices.
The container may be a ring-shaped container. Generally, the container can be of any suitable and appropriate shape The fan may include heat exchange means for facilitating transfer of cold from the fan to the air. The heat exchange means may be fins. Other formations may be employed for the heat exchange means.
The fan of the present invention may include the material which is able to be frozen. The material may be a liquid. Thus, for example, the material may be water or any other suitable and appropriate liquid material.
Alternatively, the material may be in non-liquid form such for example as a gel. Generally, any suitable and appropriate type of material may be employed.
The container may have a wipe-clean surface for use in keeping the container clean. If the container is to be placed in fridges, freezers or the like in order to have its material re-frozen, then it is highly desirable that the container be in a clean and hygienic condition when it is placed in the fridge, freezer or a similar piece of apparatus.
The container may be made of a metal or a plastics material.
The container may be a rigid container. If the container is a rigid container, then the container should not be over filled with the material. The material may expand when frozen and the space in the container is for enabling the material to expand without damaging the container.
Alternatively, the container may be a flexible container. With a flexible container, the container will be able to expand if the material expands. The entire container may be made of a flexible material, or just part of the container may be made of a flexible material.
The fan may include a guard for protecting a person coming into contact with the impeller. The guard may be a wire grill. The auxiliary cooling means may be positioned on the guard. Generally, the auxiliary cooling means may be positioned at any suitable and appropriate position on the fan.
The fan may be a surface-mounted fan. Such a fan may be mounted on a floor, a tabletop or a desktop.
Alternatively, the fan may be a hand-holdable fan. In this case, the fan may be one in which the body is an elongate body, and in which the elongate body forms a handle for holding the fan. A hand-holdable fan may be small enough to be placed in its entirety in a fridge, freezer or the like, and in this case the auxiliary cooling means could be a permanent part of the fan, although it could be removably mounted if desired.
The present invention also extends to cooling apparatus comprising a fan of the invention, the mounting means being such that the container is releasably mounted on the fan, and the cooling apparatus comprising at least one extra container whereby one container is able to be in use on the fan whilst another container is able to be having its material frozen for subsequent use with the fan. Thus, a used container could easily be removed from the fan for re-freezing purposes and whilst this re-freezing was happening, a new container with frozen material could be inserted on the fan in order that the fan could continue to operate to provide the cooled air.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a front view of a first fan of the present invention; Figure 2 is a side view of the fan shown in Figure 1; and Figure 3 shows a second fan of the present invention.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, there is shown a fan 2 for providing cool air for a person. The fan 2 comprises a body 4, and an impeller 6 which rotates in order to circulate air for cooling purposes. The impeller 6 has three blades 8 as shown in Figure 1.
The body 4 is a bent tubular metal body as shown. The impeller 6 is driven by an electric motor 10 as shown in Figure 2. During operation of the fan 2, the impeller 6 will circulate air in the immediate vicinity of the fan 2. If this air is already hot, for example hot air in a room, then the fan will basically circulating the hot air. As thus far described, the fan 2 is of a known design and construction.
In accordance with the present invention, the fan 2 is modified by being provided with auxiliary cooling means 12. The auxiliary cooling means 12 comprises a container 14 for receiving a material which is able to be frozen, and mounting means 16 which mounts the container 14 on the fan 2 such that the air which is circulated by the fan 2 is cooled. More specifically, the mounting means 16 mounts the container 14 on a front part of the fan 2 such that the container 14 is in the path of air leaving the fan 2. In use, the container 14 is such that the material in the container 14 is frozen. The container 14 and its frozen material thus provide cooling means for cooling air in the vicinity of the fan 2. It is this cooled air which is circulated by the fan 2 of the present invention. Thus the fan 2 of the present invention by its use of the auxiliary cooling means 12 is much more efficient in providing cooled air than would be a known comparable fan but without the auxiliary cooling means 12.
The mounting means 16 is a releasable mounting means 16 whereby the container 14 is releasably mounted on the fan 2. Thus the container 14 can easily be removed from the fan 2 when the material melts. The container 14 can then be placed in a fridge, freezer or other appropriate apparatus for having its freezable material re-frozen. Advantageously, the fan 2 is provided with one or more spare containers 14 which can be stored in a fridge, freezer or similar apparatus, and which can be used one at a time in place of the used container 14 in order that the fan 2 can continue to provide the cooled air. In use, the material in the container 14 will preferably be frozen for providing the longest cooling effect, but the material could simply be cooled if desired in which case the cooled but not frozen material would still provide a cooling effect, but one which was not so great as if the material were completely frozen.
The container 14 has an inlet 18 for enabling it to be filled with freezable material in the form of water. The inlet 18 is closed by closure means in the form of a screw cap 20.
As best seen from Figure 1, the container 14 is generally ring- shaped. More specifically, the container 14 is in the form of an octagonal ring. The mounting means.16 are clip mounting means. The container 14 may be made of metal or a plastics material. The surface of the container 14 is preferably flat so that it forms a wipe-clean surface for ensuring that the container 14 can easily be kept clean. The container 14 is a rigid container 14 so that, when it is filled with the water, it should not be completely filled. Sufficient space should be left in the container 14 for expansion of the water when the water freezes.
As shown in Figures 1 and 2, the fan 2 includes a guard 22 for protecting a person coming into contact with the blades 8 of the impeller 6.
The guard is in the form of a wire grill. The container 14 is mounted on the guard 22.
The fan 2 is a stand-alone surface-mounted fan. The fan 2 can thus stand on a floor, a tabletop or a desktop.
Referring now to Figure 3, there is shown a fan 24 which is a handholdable fan 24. The fan 24 has a body 26 which is an elongate body and which forms a handle for holding the fan 24. The fan 24 has an impeller 28 having blades 30. A container 32 is provided on the fan 26 as shown.
When the impeller 28 rotates, it blows air through the container 30, which is in the form of a ring. The container contains frozen material. The air thus circulated by the fan 24 is cooled.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiments of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawings have been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, a freezable material other than water may be employed. The shape of the container 14 or.30 may be other than ring-shaped. Releasable mounting means other than clips may be employed. The fan of the present invention may be used for a wide variety of different purposes and at different locations so that, for example, the fan may be used in homes and offices for cooling persons. Large fans may be used in hospitals for cooling patients with high temperatures. Small hand-holdable fans of the type shown in Figure 3 may even be used on public transport.
