Abstract

A kerbstone lifting device used in conjunction with and attached to a suitable crane allows kerb laying operatives to lift and place kerbstones without manual lifting. Two lifting forks A support the weight of the kerbstone and a clamp plate E holds the kerbstone on the forks. The design of the device allows the lifting and placing of straight and radius kerbstones to a string line and when the kerbstone is in place the device can be removed without snagging the string line. The basic design of this invention can be adapted to lift other specialized kerbstones and drainage channels.

Description

KERBSTONE LIFTING DEVICE
This invention relates to a mechanical device for the lifting and placing of kerbstones.
The manual lifting of heavy kerbstones by persons employed in the building and civil engineering industries will not be allowed when new rules set by others are enforced.
The present invention used in conjunction with a suitable crane proposes to eliminate manual lifting of the kerbstone by the kerbstone laying operatives.
This kerbstone lifting device carries the weight of the kerbstone on two small lifting forks which are pushed under the kerbstone on the one side. On the opposite side of the kerbstone is a clamp plate. When the kerbstone lifting device is lifted by the crane the clamp plate holds the kerbstone on the lifting forks. The design of the clamp plate allows the kerb laying operative to position the kerbstone to a setting out string line, as is the normal proceedure, and when the kerbstone is in position the kerbstone lifting device can be lifted clear without snagging or cutting the string line.
This invention can be used to lift and place straight or radius kerbs.
The basic principle of this design being two lifting forks on one side of the load, and a clamp plate on the other side to hold the load on the forks, can be adapted to lift and place other specialized kerbstones and drainage channels.
An example of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 shows the kerbstone lifting device with a typical kerbstone (F) being supported by the two lifting forks (A). When lifted by a suitable crane which is attached to the main lifting ring (B) the chain assembly which is attached to the ends of the device (C) using a scissor action via the fulcrum joint (D) pulls the clamp plate (E) towards the lifting forks (A) holding the kerbstone (F) in place on the lifting forks (A). When the kerbstone has been lowered into place the handle (G) is used to pull the forks from under the kerbstone allowing the crane to lift the kerbstone lifting device clear.
Figure 2 shows the clamp plate (F) which holds the kerbstone in place on the lifting forks, Figure 1(A).
Figure 3 shows a view from beneath the kerbstone with the lifting forks (A) supporting the weight of the kerbstone (F).

Claims (4)

1 A kerbstone lifting device used in conjunction with and attached to a suitable crane is used to lift and place straight and radius kerbstones.
2 A kerbstone lifting device according to claim 1 which uses two lifting forks to support the weight of the kerbstone and a clamp plate to hold the kerbstone in place on the lifting forks.
3 A kerbstone lifting device according to claim 2 uses a clamp plate, the design of which allows the kerbstone lifting device to be removed from a positioned kerbstone without snagging or cutting the setting out string line.
4 A kerbstone lifting device according to all of the preceeding claims, which can be adapted to lift and place specialized kerbstones and drainage channels.
