Abstract

A label printer that has the ability to validate addresses against user inputted postcode, then calculate correct postage based on weight of item or parcel from embedded scales (1). Printer (2) prints appropriate postage on label and informs postal agent or parcel carrier of amount to be collected from account and pending collection details. The printer also include an LCD (4) for displaying information and a keypad (3) for inputting address or postcode details. The label printer communicates with the postal agent or parcel carrier via the internet connection (5).

Description
Internet postage and parcel label printer There is currently no single device that has the capability to automatically print address and pricing information based on weight and shipping addresses.
This invention brings all the measuring devices into one technology to provide a complete black box solution Postage for both letters and packages is based on local address, destination address, service required and item weight. A combination of these parameters will determine the postage to be paid by the customer The device has several keys features 1) The package can be weighed on the scales Using the numeric (text type keypad) a valid postcode can be entered The device connects to the Internet and requests a list of valid addresses for the postcode These are displayed to the user who can select the exact destination address by using the arrow keys to scroll up and down the text on the LCD. Once the correct address details have been determined the device then requests the best postage rate from all couriers and postal authorities that will provide the service to the customer. The user can select the product or service b using the up and down keys and scrolling through the list on the LCD. When the correct product has been chosen the user accepts the details by hitting the green key on the keyboard. The device then notifies the selected courier I postal agent that a collection is required and pre advice the system of the pending letter or package to be entered into the system A sticky label with all the addressing, barcode and price information is dispensed from the thermal printer embedded within the device Each print out will be formatted to match the exact requirements of the carrier or postal operator that the service is with. A unique number will be allocated to each consignment and printed on the label, this will allow the package to be tracked over the Internet. The device also has an embedded credit card sized PC that contains all the software required to support the device. The device can also update its software over the Internet. The device also has a fall back facility where the last best-known pcce.sstoed within the device in case Internet connectivity is lost. Claim

Claims (1)

  1. A printer consisting of an integrated weighing scales, input keys, LCD
    display, internet connection and power supply can be used in the production of correctly addressed, formatted and priced postage labels for the use in parcels and letters.
    Printer can print any proprietary label required for a carrier and postal authority Device can weigh in the range from lOgrams to 36Kilograms.
    The device can connect to an addressing database and validate an address and postcode In circumstances when no match exists a user is presented with a valid list.
    Data entry for both numeric and letters will be via a text phone' style keypad e.g 12 keys on a keypad.
    Using the above keypad, users can query Internet servers to track items through to delivery. The audit trail is displayed to the user via the multi line
    LCD
    The system will pie-advise a courier or postal authority of a pending dispatch.
    The response from the authority will be a collection time.
    The system will issue a unique number for the item to enable audit trailing and
    cross-referencing.
    The device connects to a local power supply.
