Abstract

Reins, for connection to the mouth bit of a horse bridle, with an elastic insert set between the connection with the bit and the area of the reins normally held by the rider. The insert, which may be of approximately 15 centimetres in length, is fitted to the reins with stud and billet and/or a buckle fastenings. The insert reduces trauma injury caused by the bit in the mouth of a novice horse or horse with a novice rider. The main section of the rein may be of leather with a rubber coating.

Description

24 1 3929 ProposedInvention: Ellis Training Rein.
The Ellis Training Rein is intended for use in the equestrian world for the purpose of training novice horses and novice riders alike. Original thought was geared towards novice horses and riders involved in show jumping and jumping sport activity. The purpose of this training aid is intended to reduce trauma injury to the horse's mouth, whilst jumping activities take place, which mainly occur due to novice riding skills or novice jumping ability of the horse.
It is suggested that the Ellis Training Rein will also be beneficial in all schooling aspects of the horse. It is proposed that a set a leather riding (with rubber covering) reins with an insert of strong elastic ranging between 5- 7 inches in length (optimal length 6 inches) will be kinder on the horse's mouth and teach a rider feel. Often on the landing side of a fence during jumping novice riders fail to give with their hands and or some horses try to snatch the rein from the riders hand in the early stages of learning to jump. This results in the horse being jabbed in the mouth by the bit. The elastic insert is intended to compensate for rider error and novice horses jumping technique, by allowing a little more give in the rein. Thus this is intended to reduce trauma caused by the bit. (
The reins are the communication line between the horse's mouth and the rider's hands and are attached to the bit. It is suggested that the Ellis Training Rein be used in conjunction with mild simple uncomplicated bits such as the loose ring or egg-butt snaffles.
Design Two separate reins make one set, which fasten by a buckle at the top end where the rider is in contact with them. Each rein then runs down either side of the horse's neck and attaches to a bit ring either side of the horse's mouth.
Attachment at the bit end will be either using a stud and billet fastening or buckle fastening. Each set of reins will vary in length ranging between 56, 58 and 60 inches long to allow for various sizes of horses and ponies.
It is suggested that the elastic insert be approximately 3 inches from the stud and billet/buckle fastening, at the bit end and approximately 6 inches long. At this point it is suggested that the elastic be attached to the longer length of the rein (at the other end of the elastic) and that this length of leather be approximately 5 inches long. There after the leather to be covered with rubber grip the length of the rein going upwards towards the riders hands, leaving approximately 8 inches of leather uncovered by the rubber grip where the buckle fastening will be. It is suggested that the width of the rein be approximately in - 3/4 inches throughout.

Claims (3)

  1. Claims 1. The elastic insert sets these reins apart from all other riding
reins. Teaching riders feel and lightening the hand and reducing trauma in the horse's mouth during jumping activities.
  2. 2. Rubber covering of the leather over the majority of the reins to give riders grip.
  3. 3. Stud and billet/buckle fastening used for ease of fitting reins to bridle.
