Abstract

This device alleviates depression in certain cases by means of an externally applied electromagnetic field. The signal is generated electrically and applied by means of a coil which can be suitably mounted near the subject's head. The signal is chosen to approximate the natural firing rate of brain cells. A typical frequency would be in the region of 1KHz and an induced electrical field of less than 1 volt per metre. The device is portable and easily cleaned. The device is capable of operation on batteries.

DESCRIPTION
DEVICE TO ALLEVIATE DEPRESSION
t 'n'!ention relates to device whUch nav alleviate depression Tt iS 0'..+ a great Any people super Mom the elects of depression and that so far there is no known cure. Existing remedies involve drugs and comselling with varying results.
Recent published research has found anal bi-polar subjects exposed to echc-planar magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (EP-MRSI) scans reported immediate mood improvement. (American Journal of Psychiatry, 20W) .
This invention generates magnetic fields suitable for external application. The field strength and frequency are variable. The field is generated using suitable electronics and a coil.
The signal is chosen to approximate the natural firing rate of brain cells. A typical frequency would be in the region of lkHz and an induced electrical field of less than I volt per metre. However the actual signal levels and frequency can be adjusted.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described.
1. The device is portable.
2. Battery or mains power allow for both intermittent or continuous use.
3. An internal programmable controller facilitates tuning and field strength a-tmen.s.
4. The coil can be mounted by the user Ior example Gerund a d lleai-boid or under a pillow.
5. The user can set the duration, intensity and frequency of the device.
6. The device would typically generate a square wave magnetic field in the region of I kHz plus other hannonics.
7. The device incorporates fittings to allow attachment to a stand, headboard or allow it to be used on its own.
8. The device is manufactured so that its surfaces are easily wiped clean.
The actual physical dimensions are mr.portant. Hoverer a to Micas package Mach would include the battery, electrorucs and coil is shown in drawing 1.

The signal is chosen to approximate the natural firing rate of target brain cells.
The actual physical di pensions are unimportant. However a typical package would include the battery, electronics and cod.
The device differs from existing treatments using EP-MRSI machines as follows 1. The device is portable.
  2. 2. Battery or mains power allow for both intermittent or continuous use.
  3. 3. An internal programmable controller facilitates tuning and field strength adjustments.
  4. 4. The coil can be mounted by the user for example behind a bed headboard or under a pillow
  5. 5. The user can se+. the duration, intensity and frequency of the device.
  6. 6. The device would typically generate a square wave magnetic field in the region of I kHz n us other harmonics.
  7. 7. one act deq-uercy, an-.-ulle al," wavervl.l1 shape ot,hc Sign, 'I generated can be adjusted.
  8. 8. The device incorporates fittings to allow attachment to a stand, headboard or allow it to be used on its own.
  9. 9. The device is manufactured so that its surfaces are easily wiped clean.
