Abstract
A mobile unit for the bio-refinement of crude oil (or any other oil products) is in the form of a mobile transport unit divided into several compartments (Figure 1) comprising a microbial culture preparation chamber, a bioreactor where the reaction occurs, a residue collector, a heat exchanger to recover the heat from refined oil (or oil products) and heat up the crude oil (or oil products) stream(s) heading to the bio-reactor and storage compartments. This unit can be incorporated into any oil transport vehicle or vessel so that refinement can occur while a vehicle is in motion or stationary.
Description
24 1 3099 Title of the invention: Mobile Unit for the Bio-refinement of
Oil and Oil Products
Description:
Mobile units exist in many contexts for example the Advanced Oxidation Process Mobile Unit (U. S. Patent #5,180,499 & #5,308,480), a two-module, multi-phase treatment process involving Micro Dissolved Air Flotation and Micro-Ozonation, designed to destroy bacteria and viruses and oxidize numerous chemicals in aqueous streams. However, mobile units for the bigrefinement of oil and oil products have not until now been available. The units that are used for big-refinement of oil are non- mobile and consequently require more time and money before the oil can be sold for use.
According to this invention this problem is solved by means of a mobile unit for the big-refinement of crude oil (or any other oil products) in the form of a mobile unit divided into compartments comprising a culture preparation chamber (for the preparation of the microorganisms for the reaction), a big-reactor (containing the oil plus the microorganisms) where the reaction occurs, a residue collector, a heat exchanger to recover heat from refined oil (or oil products) and heat up the crude oil (or oil products) stream(s) heading to the big-reactor and storages for the crude and refined oils (or oil products). This unit can be incorporated into any oil transport vehicle or vessel so that refinement can occur while a vehicle is in motion or stationary.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which the mobile unit is incorporated into an oil tanker. Oil tankers are typically in motion for 3-6 weeks while transporting oil and the refineecnt process, which the oil must undergo either prior to or after delivery is also lengthy. Therefore, the incorporation of this unit into the oil tanker enables the refinement process to occur while the tanker is travelling to its destination thus dramatically reducing the time needed for oil to be sold as refined oil (and thus the costs incurred) as essentially the refinement and transport steps are merged into one. This also means that refinement can occur when the transport vessel is stationary or when the oil is in storage. The purpose of the division into chambers is for optimisation of safety so that; if a fire occurs it will be confined to one chamber only and will not spread, thus smiting damage.
