Abstract

A polarity adaptor allows an electrical mains socket (eg on a campsite) to be used even if it is wired incorrectly. The adaptor includes weather-proof sockets 5 mounted on a weather-proof enclosure 3, with a cable 2 and plug 1. Each of the sockets is wired differently, and each has an associated light emitting diode (led) 6, 7 and 8, which indicates the socket that the appliance must be plugged into.

Campsite Polanty Adaptor.
The invention relates to a polarity adaptor of a type which includes a plug for connecting to an electrical supply and a flexible cable connecting the plug to the adaptor As one assembly, the plug, cable and adaptor is suitable for exterior use in climates normally associated with europe.
When travelling throughout europe, for example, from campsite to campsite, it is often necessary to rewire the plug of the supply cable to your camper, caravan or appliance to suite the electrical supply provided. Such an activity can be even more inconvenient when undertaken during bad weather or in poor light conditions.
An object of the invention Is that when the adaptor is plugged into the campsite or venue supply, it will enable the user to correctly connect the appliance into the supply without delay or hinderance The adaptor is enclosed in a weatherproof shock resistant enclosure.
A description of the invention will now refer to the accompanying drawing which shows figure-1 a side elevation and figure-2 a plan elevation.
Figure-2 shows a 16amp, 230volt, 2-phase and earth industrial plug to BS/EN 60309-2 (1), with a 3-core double insulated 2.5mm sq flexible cable (2), connected to a weatherproof enclosure (3) via a compression gland (4).
Assembled on the lid of the enclosure are three 1 Camp, 230volt, 2-phase and earth IP44 small flanged panel sockets with spring return covers (5). Associated with each socket is an LED with a lens assembly (6) or (7) or (8). Alternative rated plugs and sockets may be used dependent upon the desired application.
The method of connection is that the plug (1) is connected to a suitable supply socket at the campsite or venue. The polarity of the campsite or venue is then indicated by one of the three LEDs, either (6), (7) or (8). Whichever LED is illuminated, the corresponding socket (5) Is selected as the socket in which to place the supply cable to the caravan or appliance.
An example of the operation is If the polarity of the supply is in accordance with the LIVE, NEUTRAL and EARTH sockets then the LED6 will be illuminated and the associated socket is the one into which the appliance cable must be connected.
Another example is that if the NEUTRAL and LIVE are reversed, then LED7 will be illuminated and that associated socket is the one into which the appliance cable must be connected. 2.

Claims (4)

1 A polarity adaptor comprising of a weather-proof enclosure and a number of weather-proof sockets each with an accompanying l.e.d. for each socket, one of which will illuminate to Indicate the socket which matches the supply to which the polarity adaptor is connected.
2. A polarity adaptor as claimed in claim 1 where the polarity adaptor Is connected to the local supply voltage by a flexible cable and weather proof plug.
3 A polarity adaptor as claimed in claim 1 and claim 2 that will indicate by illuminated l.e.d. the socket into which the user may plug the appliance or caravan that will be suitable for that appliance or caravan.
4. A polarity adaptor as claimed in claim 1 and claim 2 and claim 3 into which the appliance or caravan may be plugged using a weatherproof plug and a flexible cable.
