Abstract
A base station 52 receives a television signal through an aerial 16. TV programs may be recorded in flash memory 46 or on hard disk (76, Fig. 4). The base station forwards live TV or stored audio-visual information to a mobile device such as a mobile phone or PDA, which may be used to display the information. The base station may perform this data transfer using a Bluetooth (RTM) transmitter 66, an infra-red transmitter, or using a wireline connection such as USB. The base station has encoders 20, 22 for encoding the audio and visual data before transmitting it to the mobile device. The encoding may include compression. The mobile device may perform error detection or error correction on the received data. The mobile device be provided with means of controlling the base station.

Figure 5 shows a mobile television apparatus 80 according to a fifth embodiment of the invention. The apparatus 80 is substantially the same as the apparatus 70 of the s previous embodiment, with the following modifications. The same reference numerals are retained for corresponding features.
In this embodiment the audio output 72 and audio headset 74 are replaced by an audio speaker 60 provided on the mobile telephone 54 and a wireless audio headset 82. The wireless audio headset 82 incorporates a wireless radio frequency (Bluetooth) receiver lo operable to receive audio data. In this example, the audio data is transmitted to the headset from the transceiver 56 on the mobile telephone 54. The audio data may alternatively be transmitted from a transceiver on the base station 26, which may be the transceiver 66 or a separate, dedicated wireless transmitter.
The headset 82 is also provided with data processing means (not shown) operable to is process and decode the audio data for playing through the speakers of the headset 82.
A user can select, via the telephone key pad, whether to play audio data through the audio speaker 60 or through the headset 82.
Various modifications may be made to the described embodiments without departing from the scope of the invention. For example, where a PDA, mobile telephone or so mobile smartphone is described it will be appreciated that any mobile telephone, mobile smartphone, personal digital assistant (PDA), pocket personal computer (PC), handheld PC, hiptop PC or instant messenger having personal area networking means may alternatively be used.
The Flash memory card may be replaced by a different type of memory device, and the as card reader may be replaced by a correspondingly different reader device. The memory device may be fixed or removable. Different types of wireless transmitter, transceiver and receiver may be used to those described.
The audio data signal may alternatively be output to an audio speaker or to the auxiliary input of a stereo system. The audio data signal may alternatively be routed to an audio JO headset, audio speaker or stereo system from a transmitter on the base station, which may be a wireless transmitter or a wired transmitter.
c: .e ce. e: * # # * . * * . The decoding and routing means may alternatively, or additionally, comprise electronic circuitry in place of all or part of the computer programmes described.
Although the mobile television apparatus of Figures 3 to 5 is shown having a single mobile telephone, it will be appreciated that more than one mobile telephone may receive the data stream output from a single audio-visual data system. In addition, it will be appreciated that a single audio-visual data system may be used to transmit audio- visual data to different types of mobile data processing devices simultaneously.
Further, referring in particular to Fig. 5, the audio data may be received by more than one wireless audio headset, enabling more than one person to listen to the audio signal to whilst watching the video data displayed on the display screen of one mobile telephone.
The described embodiments provide various advantages, including enabling a user to watch live television broadcast programs of unlimited duration, or pre-recorded television programs or films of much greater duration than can be downloaded from an internet web site. In addition, the telephone functionality of a mobile telephone or smart Is phone can remain active during use of the mobile television apparatus since the audio- visual data is received by a separate receiver to the microwave receiver used to send and receive telephony signals. The mobile television apparatus is significantly more compact in size compared to miniature, portable televisions, and provides the additional facility to watch pre- recorded films or programs. The mobile television apparatus also enables users of mobile data processing devices incorporating digital cameras to store large numbers of digital images or a digital video recording within the audio-visual data system.
