Abstract

A distance alerting device consisting of 2 parts - the Alerter and the Tag - which alerts the user when the Tag exceeds a specified distance from the Alerter. The Alerter and Tag are battery powered electrical devices able to communicate with each other via encoded radio waves. The Alerter is able to calculate how far away the Tag is from it via the radio communication. The user is able to set the Alerter with the distance at which they are alerted. The user is alerted by the Alerter's audible and/or vibrating alarm when the specified distance is exceeded. The Tag can also be configured to emit an audible and/or visual alarm when the pre-set distance is exceeded. The Alerter and Tag could communicate with each other using Bluetooth õ technology. The Alerter function could be carried out by a mobile phone.

Description

DISTANCE ALERTER
The invention is designed to alert the user when a selected object has gone beyond a specified distance from the user.
It has many applications including alerting the user when: Luggage is being lel't behind or stolen (e.g. bags containing laptop computers) pets are escaping from the owner's house/garden children are straying too far away from the person looking after them The invention is made up of two parts - an Alerter and a Tag. Examples of these can be seen on the Drawings Sheet and they are likely to have plastic casings.
The user attaches a Tag to the target object and keeps the Alerter with them. The alarm trigger distance is then set and if the Tag moves beyond this the Alerter emits an audible warning and/or vibrates. 'I'he Tag can also be configured to emit an audible and/or visual alarm (a flashing light).
The Alerter and Tag are simple battery powered electronic devices which communicate with each other via a publicly available radio frequency. The radio signals emitted are encoded so that both parts rccognise each others signals. The Alerter calculates how far away the Tag is by the time delay in the return signal.
The process by which the invention works is as follows: 1. The distance at which the Alerter alarm is triggered is set.
2. The Alerter periodically emits an encoded signal.
3. The Tag recognises this signal.
4. The Tag responds by emitting a similarly encoded signal.
5. Thc Alerter recogniscs this signal.
6. The Alerter calculates how far away the Tag is by the time delay.
7. If the prc-set distance is exceeded the user is notified by the Alerter's audible or vibrating alarm.
8. Thc Tag can also be conligurcd to emit an audible and/or visual alarm when the pre set distance is exceeded.
BluetoothtM technology could be used as the means by which the Alerter and Tag communicate with each other and distance is calculated.
The invention could be combined with mobile phone technology so that mobile phones can carry out the function of the Alerter.

Claims (10)

  1. I. A distance alerting device consisting of 2 parts - the Alerter and the Tag - which alerts the user when the Tag exceeds a pre-set distance from the Alerter.
  2. 2. An Alerter (as claimed in Claim 1) which is a battery powered electrical device able to emit and receive encoded radio waves such that it can communicate with the Tag (as claimed in Claim 1).
  3. 3. A Tag (as claimed in Claim I) which is a battery powered electrical device able to receive and emit encoded radio waves such that it can communicate with the Alerter (as claimed in Claim I).
  4. 4. An Alerter (as claimed in Claim I) which uses radio communication with the Tag (as claimed in Claims 2 & 3) to calculate the distance the Tag is from it.
  5. 5. An Alerter (as claimed in Claim 1) which has an audible and vibrating alarm.
  6. 6. An Alerter (as claimed in Claim 1) which has a distance setting input by the user.
  7. 7. An Alerter (as claimed in Claim 1) which triggers the alarm (as claimed in Claim 5) when the distance between the Alerter and the Tag (as claimed in Claim 4) exceeds the distance input by the user (as claimed in Claim 6).
  8. 8. A Tag (as claimed in Claim I) which can be configured to emit an audible and/or visual alarm (a flashing light) when the pre-set distance is exceeded.
  9. 9. An Alerter and Tag (as claimed in Claim 1) which could communicate with each other (as claimed in Claims 2 & 3) using BluetoothM technology.
  10. 10. An Alerter (as claimed in Claim 1) which could be a mobile phone (i.e. a telephone which does not use a fixed/land line).
