Abstract

A sealing cap is of the same size and aluminium rolled edge rim construction 2 as a drinks can top, including a ring-pull tab (1, Fig 1) with a tear line. The leading edge 3 of the sealing cap is constructed like a fish hook barb 6 to snap into position under the rolled edge 2 and has slits 4 equally spaced about its circumference. The inner circular groove, situated just below the rolled edge rim construction 2, is fitted with a suitable sealing material 5. The sealing cap creates a permanent tamper seal that can withstand any pressure build up in the can, providing a gas tight seal.

Description

- 2408734
SEALING CAP
The invention relates to an aluminium drinks can which is used for the containment of carbonated soft drinks, lagers and beers.
The aluminium drinks can is of the type that has the can top permanently attached to the body of the can by use of the rolled edge method of construction.
The can top also includes a ring-pull tab and a pear shaped tear line which defines the periphery of a pouring / drinking aperture.
Such drinks cans are now common everyday items, but suffer from the disadvantage that, if the contents of the cans are only partly consumed, then the residual contents of the cans are open to the outside environment and therefore liable to contamination from flying insects, dust, dirt, sand etc., through the open pouring / drinking aperture.
Also the residual carbonated contents of open cans are likely to lose there gases, and therefore go flat. Whilst great care also has to be taken to make sure the drinks can is always kept in an upright position to prevent spillage of the contents.
The object of this invention is to provide a sealing cap, which allows partly consumed drinks cans to be re-sealed for later consumption and carried around in coat pockets, handbags, school bags, lunch boxes etc., without fear of spillage.
Accordingly, this invention provides a sealing cap that pushes onto and hooks under the rolled edge rim of an opened drinks can top, making an air / gas-tight seal that can withstand any build-up of carbonated gas pressure within the re-sealed drinks can. The sealing cap is of the same material, size and construction as the drinks can top, including a ringpull tab, and is a one-off permanent seal, that once clicked on it cannot be removed and becomes part of the drinks can, to be discarded and recycled along with the empty can.
When using a sealing cap to re-seal a partly consumed drinks can it would be preferable to approximately line up the ring-pull and open aperture on the can top with the ring-pull and closed aperture on the sealing cap. The sealing cap ring-pull closure panel which is defined by a tear line, could be made smaller than the aperture in the drinks can top, to facilitate the downward bending of the sealing cap closure panel into the open aperture of the drinks can top.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: FIGURE I shows a plan view of the sealing cap.
FIGURE 2 shows a side view of the sealing cap.
FIGURE 3 shows an enlarged cross-section view ( X - X) of the sealing cap.
FIGURE 4 shows a side view of a drinks can fitted with a sealing cap.
FIGURE 5 shows an enlarged cross-section view of the sealing cap f tted onto a can top. l
As shown in Figure 1, the sealing cap has the same profile as a drinks can top, including a ring-pull tab with a pear shaped tear line 1 and an aluminium rolled edge rim construction 2.
Figure 2 shows that the leading edge 3 of the sealing cap has slits 4 around its circumference to allow for a certain amount of resiliency when the sealing cap is pushed onto the drinks can top.
Figure 3 is an enlarged section view X-X of the sealing cap showing the inner seal 5, which is made of a suitable sealing material, situated in the groove just below the rolled edge rim construction 2.
Figure 3 also shows an enlarged section view of the leading edge 3 which is constructed like a fish hook barb 6 to ensure that once the sealing cap is pushed onto the drinks can top it makes a permanent seal that cannot be removed.
The leading edge 3 is to ensure that the sealing cap is correctly located and aligned before pushing down on the sealing cap and allowing the fish hook barbed inner rim 6 to snap into position under the rolled edge rim of the drinks can top.
Figure 4 shows a drinks can that has been re-sealed with a sealing cap.
Figure 5 is an enlarged cross-section view of the sealing cap fitted onto the top of a drinks can, showing how the inner seal 5 and the fish hook barb 6 on the leading edge 3 is located on the rolled edge rim 2 of a drinks can top, creating a permanent one-off seal that can withstand any pressure build-up in the can, and once the sealing cap is clicked into position on the drinks can top, it cannot be removed and becomes part of the drinks can, to be discarded and recycled along with the empty can.

Claims (6)

1. A sealing cap that pushes onto and hooks under the rolled edge rim of partly consumed carbonated soft drinks, lager or beer cans, so that resealed drinks cans can be carried around in clothes pockets, bags, lunch boxes etc. for later consumption, without the fear of spillage.
2. A sealing cap as claimed in Claim 1 which creates an air / gas tight seal that can withstand any build up of carbonated gas pressure within the re-sealed drinks can.
3. A sealing cap as claimed in Claim 1 and Claim 2 which is a one-off permanent seal, that once pushed on and clicked into position it cannot be removed, and becomes part of the drinks can, to be discarded and recycled along with the empty can.
4. A sealing cap as claimed in any preceding claim, of the same size and rolled edge rim construction as a drinks can top, including a ring-pull tab and pear shaped tear line which defines the periphery of a pouring / drinking aperture.
5. A sealing cap as claimed in any proceeding claim which is made from the same aluminium or aluminium alloy material as the drinks can.
6. A sealing cap substantially as herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
