Abstract
A chopping board consists of a main body or base A, and a thin, disposable chopping surface B that fits closely and securely onto the top and around the sides of the base and incorporates a gully C for the collection of food juices around it's outside edge. The profile of the cover is such that several covers can be stacked inside each other.
Description
TWO PART CROPPING BOARD
This Invention relates to a chopping board for use m kitchens or other food preparation areas Conventional chopping boards suffer from a number of disadvantages.
I The number of materials from which they can be made Is limited mainly to wood or plastic Metal stone or glass for example blunt knives quickly or chip.
2 The chopping board scores quite quickly producing a surface which can harbour bacteria and which therefore needs very thorough cleaning 3 Many chopping boards are large heavy and cumbersome makmg cleaning difficult and tedious 4 The hLe span of wooden chopping boards can be quite short If put m a dishwasher since the wood can swell and distort and the glue hnes can fall Chopping board covers removable mats and peelable cutting surfaces have been described before to address some of the above problems but usually suffer from the disadvantage that they do not cover both the top and sides of the board resulting In possible contammaton of the board by food stuffs Moreover conventional chopping boards very often have a groove or gully around the top of the board to collect food Juices This is difficult to achieve with a chopping board cover since the cover would need to have a gully moulded Into it to exactly fit the gully In the board Any slight misahgnment would result In the cover sttmg proud of the board and chopping efficiency would be greatly Impaired as a result This Invention concerns a chopping board that ehmnates all of the above disadvantages.
It consists of two parts I The main body or base of the board.
2 A thin fight disposable chopping surface or cover The base does not comes mto contact with either food or cutting Implements and can thus be made of almost any material of sufficient hardness mcludmg metal stone ceramic glass wood plastic and particle board It will also rarely need cleaning and hence its life will be much greater than that of wooden chopping boards of conventional design The cover fits closely and securely over the top surface and around the sides of the base and Is easily removed for either cleaning or disposal Its profile Is such that several covers can stack or nest inside each other for ease and efficiency of packing The cover incorporates a gully around its outside edge for collection of food Juices The gully extends beyond the edge of the base and therefore protects it from contamination by foodstuffs The cover can be made of any suitably thin mexpensve and easily moulded material mcludmg but not hated to thermoformmg plastics such asABS polyethylene polypropylene PVC acrylic polystyrene PET and other polyesters It should be of sufficient thickness such that under normal conditions of use a sharp knife will not cut right through it and Into the base When the cover Is scored with cuts or even at the end of every use it can simply be removed discarded and replaced with a new one The chopping board can be of any shape ncludmg rectangular and circular The profile of the gully can be of any form that allows nesting of several covers Inside each other A specific embodiment of the Invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing In which Figure I shows a vertical section through the chopping board Figure 2 shows a bottom view of the chopping board Refernng to the drawing The base A Is constructed from wood The cover B Is constructed from PET sheet havmg a thickness of 0 4mm In order that the cover fits securely onto the base, the contours of the upper surface and sides of the base, match closely those of the under surface of the cover.
The sides of the chopping board flare outwards towards the bottom m order that the cover can be easily fitted onto and removed from the base, and also m order that several covers can be nested mode each other for efficiency and ease of packing The height H of the base, Is shghtly greater than the Inside depth D of the cover, In order that the underside of the gully C remains clear of the surface on which the chopping board Is being used The embodiment described Is for a circular chopping board, although the essential features of the mventon apply to any other shape The chopping board can be of any practical size
Claims (3)
1. A two part chopping board of any shape consisting of a main body or base, and a thin, disposable chopping surface or cover which fits closely and securely onto the top and around the sides of the base and incorporates a gully for the collection of food juices around it's outside edge.
2. A two part chopping board as claimed in claim 1 wherein the profile of the cover can be of any form that allows stacking or nesting of several covers inside each other.
3. A two part chopping board as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the profile of the gully around the outside edge of the cover can be of any form that allows stacking or nesting of several covers inside each other.
